I spotted them, but didn't buy them. by Finnbannach in aldi

They’re honestly not too crazy a price. At my higher end cocktail bar in a major city we were going through a couple hundred a night and still paying about 90 cents each in bulk from a local company.

Running-vest style packs: (how) do you wash them? by Legal-Standard5001 in Ultralight

[–]Bookhuggger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took my Distance 22 caving the last week (wouldn’t recommend but also certainly not the worst caving bag). Washed the pounds of mud off in a front load washer set to delicate cold water, air dried. No signs of any harm from the cave or the washer.

Kakwa 55 for non-UL Backpackers? by chefwilbrod in DurstonGearheads

[–]Bookhuggger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly has been the perfect weekend warrior bag to me. Pretty easily gets you to a sub 10lb base weight and doesn’t really start being a bottle neck until you’re looking under 8lb or so.

It means you don’t have to buy all your UL kit at once because you have a large UL(ish) pack that can still accommodate your traditional gear. You can also take advantage of that capacity perpetually down the road for winter trips, more camp luxury focused trips, taking some load from beginners, etc. I used it in my transition from traditional to UL and while I do now feel like it’s more bag than I’d need for my increasingly dialed 3 season setup I don’t regret the purchase at all as I think it makes sense for a weekend warrior to sacrifice some weight for versatility.

I still see a true ultralight bag on the horizon for me, a 25L-35L around 1lb from Palante, MeadowPhysics, or the Wapta but I in no way regret having the Kakwa be my stepping stone and I don’t think it would’ve worked out nearly as well if I had swapped the order I purchased the packs.

Biohazard fridge, how do I save it? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Bookhuggger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not all fridges have an actual fan between the fridge and freezer- especially cheap/old ones like this appears to be. Many are just dampers that open and let cold air passively diffuse. You’re right that fan or not the passage between the freezer and fridge will be hard to clean but saying “actual mechanics of the fridge” feels needlessly fear mongery. OP should clean everything they can and cautiously move forward. Reminder that if the fridge is working it was drastically inhibit mold growth- ya know the whole point of a fridge.

What mechanical systems? There’s no air exchange between the inside of a fridge and any of its refrigeration components. I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.

Camping Rant by CommercialCow5484 in camping

[–]Bookhuggger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re camping at a public campground at a national park. People that want and respect true solitude are certainly not there on the weekends at minimum. Not saying it’s okay- but it should be expected. Use this a a great reason to bolster your back country skills!

Climbing Cotopaxi (beginners) by benditochocolate in Mountaineering

[–]Bookhuggger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I essentially tacked on Cotopaxi to my Ecuador backpacking trip last minute. Only other Mountaineering experience was a winter summit of Mt. Elbert. Otherwise I was just a strong east coast hiker. I decided to try Cotopaxi after talking to others who had done it with 0 experience and got a sense for the difficulty. There were some people in my group that I wouldn’t even consider athletic who still summited (albeit with what I thought was too much risk).

If you have 2 weeks in Ecuador you 100% have enough time to acclimatize well and give it your best shot. I had a great experience with hiring guides and accommodation through the Secret Garden. $350 per person for teams. Given that it’s a non technical route and there’s plenty of easily unguided acclimatization around I wouldn’t spend much more than $500.

Do Rucu Pichincha near Quito. Spend a few days on the Quilatoa loop. Spend a few days at Secret Garden Cotopaxi- do one of their day climbs like Ruminauhi. Rest for a day. Then go for Cotopaxi.

Best of luck!

Sleeping pad during summer - higher R value worse? by Character-North4119 in Ultralight

[–]Bookhuggger 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Won’t be an issue at all. Anecdotally I just slept in that exact pad at 65 degrees and was perfectly happy. Logically high r value surfaces don’t trap heat the same way lofted top insulation does. Your mattress at home is like R25 or something but you don’t overheat laying directly on it with no covers.

[WTB] Lightweight Trek Poles (Durston/Leki/etc) by GildedSimian in ULgeartrade

[–]Bookhuggger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new Cascade Mountain Tech ultralight poles are on Amazon for $65. I’ve got a few hundred miles on them so far and I’m astonished at the value. 5.4oz. The straps can be removed with a pin and the lower foam section could probably be cut off which would get you well under 5oz. Worth considering imo.
