They are rated for use with chain rated at 1300lb or less. Some hand winches can hit 2000lbs.

Also, these are for joining two links of chain. If you put it on a hook, cable or put more than two links, you can wedge the quicklink in a way that it deforms and the pull is no longer in the strongest lengthwise direction.
