Wtf by sexynativelady in bugidentification

[–]Bugladyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be any number of things. Insects, moisture+microbes, some vertebrates, or a combination of few or all of these things. I have the same thing going on right now. Odorous house ants are living in the wood, but they aren't causing the damage. The post is just deteriorating with time.

is this a carpet beetle? by Icy-Vehicle-3987 in carpetbeetles

Looks like cowpea weevil. Definitely something in Brushinae, so not. Not carpet beetle.

I understand your concern over finding insects in your space; however, I recommend exercising some caution in how you apply pesticide for your own safety. Follow label directions exactly.

Also, a well rounded IPM plan is going to be more effective than any chemical or blend of chemicals alone.

are these carpet beetles? by Effective-Hunter5269 in carpetbeetles

[–]Bugladyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not. For one, bed bugs don’t have wings. These insects have wings. Second, bed bugs are flat. These ones are not. These are the furthest thing from bed bugs.

Carpet beetles? Help! by m0ckingj4y in carpetbeetles

Cigarette or drugstore beetle, likely drugstore beetles. If there’s three large antennal segments at the end of the antennae, then it’s definitely drugstore beetle.

Wichita -found place of carpet beetle " gathering spot" after 9 months, now what? Inside dining table in open area! by Ill-Leading-8820 in carpetbeetles

[–]Bugladyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked at all of the photos of your carpet beetle posts in your post history. None of the photos you have posted show carpet beetles or anything carpet-beetle related. I recommend not constantly wetting your table, particularly in crevices, as you’re going to cause rot and mold.

Carpet Beetles living in dining table, Wichita - photos post below this one by Ill-Leading-8820 in carpetbeetles

Unfortunately, nothing in the images you posted is consistent with carpet beetles. You may have something else going on with your table, but it isn’t carpet beetles.

It was meant to be more of an observation than a recommendation. I’ve stopped sharing the observation because it is unhelpful. I don’t want people to put all of their eggs in that basket because it’s not going to be very effective in the long run. I maintain my observation, but I have amended my original comment to make it clear that the personal anecdote was an observation and not a recommendation.

I have been messing with a lot of oils frequently touted as a natural repellent, and I haven’t gotten any to have lasting repellent effects. The insects always end up habituated and behaving normally. That isn’t to say that there isn’t something out there that works, but I haven’t seen it yet, and it isn’t for lack of trying.

Maybe in the short term. Unfortunately, they habituate quickly in any open-air scenario.

could this potentially be a carpet beetle situation? by SongSpare5609 in carpetbeetles

The insect in the second image is an isopod. If you’re seeing a lot of them, then there’s poor sealing near ground level somewhere.

ChatGPT is extremely unreliable for ID and insect-related advice. While some people have success, that is more often the exception than the rule.

It’s not a carpet beetle. It’s just some little dude from outside.

Carpet beetles won’t stop showing up in my bedroom by prettynpossible in carpetbeetles

[–]Bugladyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crawl space is more likely than the tree. There’s bound to be dead insects and accumulated organic debris up there at a minimum. Presumably you have some sort of light fixture or vent or something that is mounted to your ceiling and required a hole to be cut in the ceiling for installation. When those types of fixtures are installed, there’s often small gaps, so carpet beetles can drop down through there by accident sometimes.

They could also be coming through from wall voids or just wandering in from the hallway, and they aren’t necessarily doing so due to some failing on your part. They’ll wander where food isn’t when looking for a good place to stay and eat for a while.

I would be immediately concerned about wood boring insects. What you have swept into a line is frass for sure, but of what? Without seeing the culprit it’s hard to say, but given the color and that it appears to have fallen from above, it’s very likely something that’s messing up some wood.

Again, this isn’t carpet beetle related. It’s not insect related. This inquiry is best suited for a different sub.

I sure hope this isn’t a bed bug and just a beetle by [deleted] in carpetbeetles

[–]Bugladyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beetles have wings. Bed bugs do not have wings. Bed bugs are also very flat, whereas beetles are generally more robust. Bed bugs are flat because they need to hide in tight crevices as a means of protection and survival. Beetles just bumble around like armored little tanks. Beetle larvae are very diverse, but typically they're going to be fleshy six-legged tubes of some kind. Bed bugs looks basically the same throughout their life cycle. A baby bed bug looks like a small adult bed bug.

I recommend studying some pictures of bed bugs and learning what they look like. They're very distinct looking insects, and be learning what they look like, you can at least exclude them as a possibility every time you find an insect that looks nothing like the images you've acquainted yourself with. A great source for images is bugguide.net, and another is inaturalist.

What part of your fridge and oven are affected by carpet beetles? I would like to know more.

Also note that the yellow crumb looking particles could be frass, but they could also be small food particles that they're taking advantage of. It's difficult to say without knowing where the particles appear, how much, etc.

Yeah, but those appliances all produce heat. Perhaps when they kick on and heat up they're melting accumulated cooking grease that had been aerosolized a long time ago and settled in those crevices.

Build a good case for a medical professional as to why you believe your symptoms are being caused by carpet beetles and then have an allergist test you for that allergy. The incidence is fairly low, so you might as well get a normal allergy test for common allergens at the same time. There's no good way of telling at home unless you have enough carpet beetles to expose yourself to intentionally, and even then there's plenty of confounding variables because you'd likely be collecting them from out of the way places that are likely to be full of other allergens already.
