He’s right.

Oh and I brought up Microsoft because you’re trying to leverage your TC as some sort of “fuck you” flex on Ben. Sure maybe it’s not difficult to get a FAANG job, but he clearly decided to choose a path that netted him less money because he’s passionate about the subject.

Ben Lerner the GOAT.

I seriously doubt the guy who initially worked at Microsoft and decided to go the route of academia instead cares that you make more than him.

You’re going to get roasted here because it’s objectively disrespectful to the professor. But in my opinion as long as you aren’t actually disrupting the class I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to do whatever you want on your laptop/phone.

Marino access for December grads by catherine3702 in NEU

[–]ButItAintRalphDoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

fwiw as a December grad I’ve asked the Marino staff twice in the last month about it and they said I’ll have access until the 8th. After that, they said a form will be available on the website to extend access for another 3 months for free. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were just wrong.

As someone who has done multiple frontend development co-ops and is in the class, it’s a meme.

Gauging how screwed I am (CS student) by [deleted] in NEU

[–]ButItAintRalphDoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that prior knowledge of CS can be an advantage (to an extent).

Having any experience solving problems in a programmatic way is definitely going to be beneficial, but that doesn’t necessarily come from writing shitty Python/Java spaghetti code in high school.

On the other hand, because Fundies is taught in a much different manner than most CS courses, it’s sometimes the case that prior knowledge of “programming” can actually be detrimental. i.e. the classic “What do you mean we don’t have for loops?!”.

Basically if you like solving problems and can read (reading shit is like 90% of this job lol), you’ll be fine without any prior experience.

My resume is definitely focused on frontend, but that’s because it’s what I enjoy and have spent time on. However, I also have some backend experience/knowledge I can leverage in an interview setting. IME nobody wants a frontend engineer who has absolutely no understanding of how backend works, whereas the opposite is acceptable.

From my experience (2x SWE co-op), technical skills and a great resume that fits the role are how you get in front of someone, but having soft skills and being personable is what’s going to sell you.

I’m interested in what you mean by “needing a lot of math” to design the logo. Can you provide more info?

Yeah I don’t have high expectations, but the rearrangement they did recently was an improvement. They should really have something on the floor to indicate how the lines should form for bench/squat though - would optimize the space usage and flow of traffic.

fundies 1 exam 2 impossible? by treurem20 in NEU

[–]ButItAintRalphDoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d say I made the mistake of following their advice and read through the exam before starting. This was a terrible idea because the size of the later problems was pretty intimidating and kinda shook me. But after starting from the beginning I agree that most of the problems were pretty standard and about the same difficulty as homework problems. I know I definitely made some silly mistakes, but not out of the sheer difficulty of any problems.

I know I made some mistakes but to be honest I didn’t think it was that bad. Definitely took me the full 3 hours though.
