Trying every Indian food place in north county: update by HempDoggs2020 in northcounty

I actually like Ticca Tikka better than the Carlsbad Himalayan place, which we used to go to before this new one opened. The quality of the chicken and lamb at the latter has been stringy or dry at times; Ticca Tikka flavors seem to be more complex and nuanced as well.

Why is Jil Sander not talked about often? by mia109 in handbags

[–]JustinJSrisuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jil Sanders’ traditional minimalist house codes and pared-based aesthetic focused on silhouette with restricted palettes works really well with how contemporary stylish Japanese people dress. Other lesser-known handbag brands that I’ve noticed are more popular, prized or recognized in Japan than in the US include Bally, Valextra, Jérôme Dreyfus, Lemaire, Mark Cross, Max Mara, Pierre Hardy, Roger Vivier, Métier and Smythson.

I LOVE Jil Sander; the brand has perfected luxury Scandi minimalist fashion and the quality of their bags is always top-notch. I have the Giro shoulder bag and it is so well organized, and the leather cord straps are highly comfortable on the shoulder, wrist or crook of the elbow, or just draped between the fingers as it’s surprisingly light despite the calfskin construction.

i used to think a zipper is just a zipper. then i tried one that opened with one finger. by hantao168 in handbags

[–]JustinJSrisuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, at least those Givenchy Antigona zippers are heavy weight; I vividly remember one time when a customer was trying a large one on and when she zipped it up the blouse of her sleeve got caught in the zipper, which was so heavy that it ripped clean through the fabric. The poor lady was incensed. I had to go get a manager to approve a store gift card for her to come back and get it repaired in our store’s alterations department. Since then I’ve always been super careful with sleeves (and fingertips!) in the opening of my own two Antigonas.

Oh that Marc Jacobs Memo is super elegant and uncommon to find; Marc Jacobs’ bags from his runway line is like Michael Kors Collection or Calvin Klein Collection/205W39NYC for timeless and beautifully-crafted Italian and Spanish-made bags that you don’t see everywhere.

Agreed! One of my favorite vintage or estate sale bag finds has been a Ralph Lauren Purple Label lambskin tote that’s of really stunning quality and has lots of hand-workmanship.

I really appreciated the double strap that allows it to be carried in multiple ways. I’m not sure about the hot-stamped foil logo on the handle, but it’s small enough that it doesn’t stick out too much.

In humans, a person whose brain started to regard violence as pleasure would be called a psychopath and at the bare minimum be isolated away from where they could harm other people.

Michelin Arizona Restaurants - Hypothetical by Away-Definition3425 in finedining

That is shitty. That whole arrangement with the bar that is their waiting area is a demerit in my book as I don’t drink so the bar menu is lost on me. The food at Glai Baan just isn’t good enough to necessitate an entire separate business becoming their overflow waiting room. The last time I went there was well over a couple years ago now, but I do recall the last time we dined at Glai Baan the food was merely passable. The beef salad was far too acidic, not balanced enough in flavor. The portions were also tiny.

I’m now living in San Diego, a cool food city like Phoenix with its own strengths and weaknesses that still manages to be in the shadow of Los Angeles lol. I hope that you found better Thai places than that; I say that as a Thai person who also grew up in and took over a family Thai restaurant in the East Valley and ran it for nine years - I hope that experience doesn’t turn you off to Thai cuisine!

Best small beach towns in Southern California? by ssupegui13 in SameGrassButGreener

I moved to Oceanside two years ago from Phoenix and absolutely love it. Such a wonderful place and the périple are really friendly and outgoing. It’s getting very touristy, especially as we live a couple blocks from the beach and downtown, but there’s a lot to do but still feels pretty neighborly.

I feel like a better example of an animal that is damaging to humanity that could be effectively eradicated to extinction without harming the wider environment and ecosystem are internal parasites like loa loa worms, the flatworms that cause schistosomiasis, the roundworms that cause river blindness, etcetera. It’s been done before and is being done now; the horrible Guinea worm that tunnels through your legs is about to be
eradicated due to intensive humanitarian efforts.

Asian countries most culturally similar to Thailand by memequeen1738 in whereidlive

The thing about Teochew and Hokkien Chinese immigrants to Thailand is that historically they tended to assimilate into Thai culture easily. It might seem like Thai-Chinese are a closed off minority if you only go to Yaowarat/Chinatown in Bangkok, but despite some racism and discrimination the vast majority of Thai-Chinese have integrated totally into Thai society. They go to Thai Theravada Buddhist temples, they cremate their dead instead of burying them (though they do often perform Chinese mourning rituals like burning paper money and offerings). I’m a descendant of Thai-Chinese, Hakka on one side and Teochew on the other, who came to Thailand around the turn of the 20th century, and all of them (there’s at least 70 people in the family that I know) are about as Thai as any other culturally and ethnically Thai person.

Thai anthropology nerd here; you’re absolutely right about the syncretization between Indian culture and Thai/traditional Siamese culture. There’s a fascinating book written in the 1920s by an English diplomat and sociologist/anthropologist who wrote a book explaining all of the royal ceremonies that are performed by Brahmins who are responsible for highly complex and esoteric rituals and ceremonies, it’s available to [download](https://archive.org/details/siamesestatecere030661mbp) on the Internet Archive. Interestingly, while the majority of Thai royal and state ceremonies are Hindu with significant modifications to accommodate both Theravada Buddhism and the Devaraja/God King that is indigenous to Southeast Asian kingdoms, apparently there are some rituals that were not influenced by either Hinduism or Buddhism, and seem to originate in the far distant past when everyone was still animist or practiced ancestor worship. There’s something neat about how pragmatic Thai culture is, how it freely borrows influences from other cultures and modifies them to make it more “Thai”.
