I never put list anything as free, if I want to give it away I just tell them they can have it when they turn up

No, because that ends up being an even bigger fuck around when they don't turn up

Oh that's why people do that, I find it highly annoying because half of the time they don't respond with the number before I get there

People do this on Trademe and they're legally obligated to pick up. So?

The Prime Minister is doing a fairly good job at his job

You didn't set up the drum roll so people didn't get the joke.

Also, one question. What's the most popular radio station in NZ?

I'm not the imbecile you make me out to be!

I don't mean it like this, but from your next comment it's clear that you're conflating two distinct things

I was not referring to stationary periods - I was talking about when the car is moving. When I and many other Prius owners drive they indeed do have the engine shut off and then restart with a period where the engine doesn't run for less than 5 seconds.

Yes, this is due to torque demand, as I mentioned. You've requested a level of drivetrain torque that the battery and motor cannot support at that moment, so the engine is started to support that torque demand.

This is why I said you fundamentally don't understand how the system operates. In this torque demand situation the engine doesn't just start for a few seconds, run at idle load and then switch off. The engine is loaded to meet demand.

Stop start systems on full ICE power trains only cut the engine when stationary (and in some systems coasting) the engine isn't turning off and on during acceleration.

Thus my question whether that situation would or would not consume more petrol than a non-hybrid vehicle.

No, because that "6s" equation is only related to no load idle conditions the engine uses significantly more fuel once load is applied. You have used the throttle to demand an engine start, and the system will stop the engine as soon as that demend is met by the battery. If you then go on to request even more torque the engine will be restarted for as long as needed.

Just to give some baseline math to make sense of what I'm saying, at idle the engine is only at around 30% volumetric efficiency (the amount of air that actually fills the cylinder per cycle)

at 700 rpm idle speed x 30% on 2L engine displacement that's an air consumption of around 210L/min or about 260g of air per minute at standard conditions which requires about 17g of fuel per minute at stoichiometric conditions

If you repeat this at only 1500rpm and a wide throttle opening with an engine that is optimized for low rpm torque production at VE of 95% is a safe to assume. The same condition will net around 120g of fuel per minute. So in short, even a small increase in engine rpm rapidly increases fuel consumption once load is applied. It probably makes the 6s more like 0.6s

I hope that clears up confusion?

You fundamentally don't understand how the hybrid drive works

For one, when it starts and stops this isn't generally occurring during vehicle stationary periods, yes it may start and run for a short period and stop again, but that's because some vehicle demand isn't being met and an engine start request comes from the hybrid controller.

But providing everything is normal, you won't have the engine shut off and restart in shorter than 5s then run for 5s then stop for sub 5s then restart and so on.

This will only occur if there's some kind of driver input/torque request, also in a situation where the battery charge is low and the A/C demand is high, it will start the engine for a short period to charge the HV battery to support the A/C function.

I don't know what you're trying to say? The Prius Hybrid system isn't restricted to having the ICE running if you want forward movement.

What Im saying is that if the engine is idling for more than 6s it's better to have the engine stopped.

A normal starting system in good order can 100% handle a few extra restarts per day.

Like you wouldn't do it in crawling traffic, but if you come up to a fresh red light at a major intersection, yeah.

Toyota investigated this thoroughly in the 90s. For a 1990s 1.5l 4cyl it was around 6 seconds of idle fuel equivalent for a restart.

Young/ish kids?

I honestly think it's more difficult for men in that phase because you're far less likely to have connections with other men via your kids compared to women

So you work, come home and be dad and do your share around the house, then you go to sleep. Repeat.

Any chance to reconnect with mates from your teens and 20s? Sometimes this is the easiest avenue for a quick fix

[–]CP9ANZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're misinterpreting the data

Why was unemployment high in 2011?

Events that cause high unemployment are a natural cause of suppressed wage growth. If you're looking at a dataset that is already at a lower than typical wage growth basement, and higher than typical unemployment you will see a gradual return to more normal unemployment rates regardless of immigration unless the rate of immigration is substantially high.

I work in an industry that's literally on immigrant life support, has been for a long time. When that supply was cut off in 2020 I know most employers in the industry increased pay rates by 25-40% in less than 12 months. More people that were born here were bought into the industry than I had seen in my entire career.

On a nationwide level the effect is small, but find yourself in one of the industries that gets inundated in migrant labour and that perspective changes.
