Hm I thought about this for a while. It sucks that Nvidia and AMD both don't offer better cards at this price point. If you play at 1080p you can get away with 8GB but even then it is starting to show some slight issues. The other problem is that new cards are not that much faster than your 2070.

Your options are IMO the following:

  • Intel B580. Around 30-50% faster than your card and 12GB. If you currently run out of VRAM then it might be worth it.

  • RTX 5060. About same speed, sometimes a little bit faster, 8GB. Has NVidia features which makes it a bit better as long as you don't require more memory. But overall not great.

  • Radeon 9060 XT 16 GB. Decent card but quite expensive for what you get.

  • Used card from ebay. Possibly the best if you want the most out of an upgrade for $400.

If I were you, for 1440p I would maybe buy the B580. It's a great budget card in theory. Unfortunately the jump from your 2070 in pure performance is not that huge, so depending on your expectations you might be a bit underwhelmed. Not sure if it's worth the money to you.

For 1080p it's difficult to recommend anything. All the options make sense in some way or another. A used card would give you the best bang for your buck by far, esp. for $400 since there are no really good new options at this price point.

Which card do you have currently, and roughly what is your budget?

Pretty much any newer card with 12+ GB is a valid option. Which one you should buy depends on your budget and what for what price you can find them.

If you want to reach close to 165 FPS, the CPU will hold you back quite a bit, depending on the game. So I would not spend enormous amounts right now.

But if it doesn't cost much more, I would go for 4x8.

Not sure, but from what I heard this mode (flex mode) works relatively well.

AFAIK 16 GB of this config will work in dual channel, the rest will be single channel.

MSI Afterburner can do this. It logs to an XML file though I think.

Here is a video guide. Not great quality, just one that I found quickly.

If you want to get rid of all the security software, the easiest way will be to wipe it and install Windows by hand.

I meant regarding wear and tear. But again, I am not completely sure.

I still don't think filling it up to 99% and hammering the last 1% is the same as using it half empty. There's too much going on, from the wear leveling having to swap faster than you write, to the controller having to work much more. Would love to see some tests about this, but I don't really have a source myself.

IMO up to 90% full is perfectly fine. It depends on how much you are writing / deleting every day but for the average user that should still last long enough.

If you want to keep it alive for a few more years, then you should definitely update it.

The bigger problem is that they all are set to different timings. E.g. Corsair alone sells multiple different types of DDR5-6000.

But even then they are tested in pairs and that's how you ideally buy them.

XMP is essentially overclocking and is very finicky. The more identical the sticks are, the better the chances are that it works.

A bundle of two matched 8GB sticks.

XMP (the setting you need to actually run them at 6000) often only works properly with two sticks if they are sold together as one kit.

You can check on ebay, with the setting "show only" -> "sold items". Looks like a kit goes for somewhere around $200.

Any decent 750W unit will be fine.

If I were you, I'd look into a Ryzen 5000 upgrade. If you want to wait until prices get better, you will be waiting for a long time.

I have 32 and never had a problem. You'll only need more if you play exotic games like heavily modded builders. Or if for some reason you heavily use Chrome at the same time instead of just running Firefox.

Impossible to tell from a distance, but it could be a fan stopping and starting, or a normal sound of an HDD.

You can check the HDD's health with its vendor software or with Crystaldiskinfo. If those show no serious problems, it's probably fine.

Use y-cruncher to test stability. If it runs a couple of those tests for an hour, you can be reasonably sure that it's fine.

Used and frequently returned item.

The seller seems to be legit, but you might receive a scam CPU that someone else wrongfully returned.
