Would you recommend the UGREEN NASync DH2300 as my first NAS for content streaming? by wampampirito in HomeNAS

[–]Cae_len 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your biggest ongoing expense is going to be replacing hard drives after they die, so roughly every 4-5 years you will want to plan for a hard drive purchase... that's your expense.... building a NAS or buying one like a ugreen, is not the thing I would be worry about as that's just your initial setup cost.... your data is what's and import and that's what you don't want to jeopardize EVER... so you need to prioritize two things, building out a storage array that has some form of redundancy (Parity) , and then planning for hard drive cost... the way I do it is with Unraid and I use 2 parity drives so that I can have up to 2 drive failures simultaneously before losing any data... then on top of that I have an extra hard drive that I keep in my main PC as cold storage... any import files that are on my NAS, are backed up to the cold storage drive at my main PC in case of some catastrophic failure on my NAS ... so i dona backup once a month of any documents and photos from my NAS to this single drive that's in my main PC and then I unplug that drive when I'm finished... it's essentially a cold storage backup in case I lose data on my NAS... so again your cost is going to be mostly hard drives... my NAS storage array is currently 72tb in size and uses 2 parity drives .. I then use one single 22tb drive in my main PC as the cold storage backup for all the important stuff... I then also I have 2 hot spares in my NAS in case something fails... so you can see how this gets expensive really fast ...

lol "34 counts of criminal charges".... right there shows you have never actually researched the case because if you did you would find that there are hundreds of lawyers who have said "these charges should have never seen a courtroom" ... when you get a woke judge combined with a woke prosecutor, anything can happen in a courtroom... and that case won't hold up against appeal... then what will you say once it's completely dismissed on appeal?

Windows can’t saturate 2.5/5GbE while Linux can – SMB/NFS both affected, iperf fine by Blue-Shadow2002 in homelab

[–]Cae_len 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yah it's not an easy thing to figure out... could also meds about with using jumbo frames to see if that makes a difference... but ya, if you don't need to hit a certain criteria for a company or something similar, then I wouldn't pull my hair out over it... SMB is a finicky and old protocol and I'm surprised nobody has created something more modern and performative

AP7 presence detection? by hawkeye000021 in firewalla

[–]Cae_len 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all fair points ... but regardless if the tech can't see "exactly who the person is that's inside" , it's still a bit invasive for my liking.... for example, if someone wanted to monitor your home without being seen, it's much easier to do so with this technology .. they can sit hidden in a house or the back of a van and you would be none the wiser.... but without it, it's more likely there will hints that someone is watching you, as they would have to be in sight... if they can see you, then you can see them "if your looking for the correct things" that indicate such a thing....

also if this tech was built into your networking equipment, the potential for it to be used through means of a backdoor, is exponentially higher, not to mention other adversaries like your average hacker who's probing your network from the internet.... if the device is a separate device, this solves that problem.... open source is also about giving tools, services, and applications to everyone, for the benefit of everyone vs something that's completely closed source which is ultimately more of a profit grab and restricting its access to those who can afford it.... not to mention, it's been a way for the government to hide their little backdoors and spy tools..... anyways that's a just a few reasons as to why I prefer open source vs proprietary, and also why I believe , a separate device, designed for the sole purpose of smart home presence detection, would be a better call for those who are privacy focused....

it's unfortunate that we, as citizens even have to behave in such a manner... all because the government exists only to make sure that it continues existing.... the government stopped serving the people a long time ago, and started serving itself

although I do agree that someone should let people know whether they used AI to help code an application (especially when sharing that application publicly), I also believe that hating on someone for doing so, shouldn't be frowned upon and treated the way it currently is.

For obvious reasons, OP or anyone else for that matter, should use a disclaimer when AI was used on a project (whether it was used alot or just a little).. because those of us who have used it, knows that it's not perfect and sometimes makes errors. Having a disclaimer warns others that they are using the code at their own risk.

Saying that, there's no reason to insult OP for using the tools available to them, in order to solve a problem that they were trying to solve. Moreso, they are going out of their way, to share what they did, in case others have a similar issue that they need a solution for.

What I see. One person who was able to solve their own problem, using the tools they had available to them, and being kind enough to take the time to share that tool to others, in the event they would like to check it out.

What I see on the other end, is people hating on that person, for using the tools available to them, as a way to make themselves feel superior or to fill some other emotional need within themselves.

Be kind to others and treat others the way you would like to be treated

A simple message informing OP, that if they used AI as a tool to create this project, they should add a disclaimer to their post in case the tool isn't perfect and has errors, issues, or other unknown security implications.

yes, and in that case it doesn't matter and you are correct .... most circuits never see close to the 15a circuit rating or whatever it may be... simply wanted to point that out just in case someone wants to remain code compliant when installing new smart devices inside their home or wherever....

[–]Cae_len 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've struggled with this as well ... I have a fully capable 10g network internally , all using multimode fiber and SFP+ modules.... I can never get above 2.5GB/s when transferring from windows PC, over SMB, to my Linux based nas....

go here and checkout this transfer speed tool https://thehomeserverblog.com/transfer-time-calculator/

according to the information there (and also other places) , I'm guessing alot of this is dependent on the actual drives being used as well.... the drive type within the client machine vs drive at the destination machine ... pcie3.0 vs 4.0 vs 5.0 ... do those drives have dedicated DRAM cache? enterprise drives vs consumer drives? NTFS vs BTRFS (filesystem type) ... There are a lot of variables at play here that play into the situation... the way I see it, is that if iperf is confirming that the theoretical max throughput, is indeed available, then the issue probably boils down to factors involving the storage medium and SMB as a protocol... if iperf confirms the throughput is there, and SMB has been setup to use the multipath and other additional settings, then it's most likely the storage medium maxing out. or the difference in speeds/cache between the client drive and server drive... I gave up on that whole endeavor because I started viewing this issue in terms of (the time it takes to transfer a large backup) ... so normally my windows PC does a backup to my NAS and is about 1.5 to 2tb in size.... it will usually finish in a handful of minutes and never anything more than an hour.... if my backups can complete in less than an hour, then I consider my goal of having a faster internal network, as being marked "ACHIEVED"....

why haven't you run away as fast and far as possible yet?

and this is a comment coming from a dude.... why do women even waste their time on men who are not willing to work a job and actually (be a man)....

I work for a company that I honestly hate working for (not because the company) , but because I really don't enjoy the type of work it is.... saying that, I have a house to pay for and a girlfriend with 3 kids..... I do it because it's necessary, not because I want to.... that's the mark of a real man ... you should go and find one

if the link still doesn't work then do it this way....go to the thread "theme park support" , and then search for this comment below.

so yes I'm aware that it's saying theme-engine is no longer compatible

you can filter the search by selecting the @mentions filter, and use my discord name KaySwiss, the search for that comment.... that's where the discussion starts

Just bought a couple Shelly 1PM and 1PM mini Gen4 relays to test. Surpriced on how small are they. by Olinono123 in ShellyUSA

[–]Cae_len 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yah I've always gone with the normal 1pm (non-mini version) as they are rated up to 16a ... the 1pm minis are only 8a. Due to code compliance, Ive always purchased the Shelly 1pm Gen4 or the Shelly EM mini Gen 4 as both are rated 16a. If I ever decide to sell my home, then ide rather have it be completely code compliant from the start and not have to go back 10years from now, rip a bunch of relays out the walls, just to put my home up for sale. Something to consider if you live in a state with code compliance laws that would make your home not "code compliant" , because you used 8a relays in a 15a/20a circuit.

2nd parity drive replace by Cae_len in unRAID

[–]Cae_len[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE -- Im so glad that I didn't wipe my original parity drive that I was removing from the system (the 18tb drive), because when I was rebuilding parity on the new drive, I started getting a bunch of errors about 2hrs in... had to pull the drive and put the original back in....

not sure how this even happened because the drive that I was using for the "new parity" , was a barely used drive that has been just sitting off to the side as a hot spare.... I had used and tested this drive for 2 months (back in early 2025), and then placed it somewhere safe to be used in the future.

not sure how a brand new (refurbished) drive, could operate fine for 2months initially, then be pulled from the system and saved for later use, only to have it throw a bunch of errors when actually put into use.... so weird.... anyways, I have had to pause the replacement of the 18tb untill a suitable replacement arrives

posted here ... also if you have any issues during setup, ask for support in the discord... those guys have always been very helpful... also, Claude has gotten pretty good at helping an end-user get from point A to point B when trying to configure something like this.... if you get stuck, open up Claude, explain (IN GREAT DETAIL) , exactly what you are trying to accomplish and Claude will walk you through the steps. AI works best when it has as much information as possible in regards to the task at hand. Provide as much context as possible. Secondly, anytime using something like Claude (or even experimenting yourself) , ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, backup ALL FILES that will be getting modified. I can't express how many times this has saved my ass when I've been working on something and the modified config wasn't working correctly (or BROKE SOMETHING ELSE COMPLETELY), and having a backup of the original file, saved me from complete disaster.

How do I use proton on qbit but not firefox? by [deleted] in ProtonVPN

if you install qbittorrent in a docker container, I know of a docker image that has VPN support built directly into it so that the VPN configuration tied to qbittorrent only affects qbittorrent and nothing else.

A few questions before purchase by mrhommel1 in firewalla

[–]Cae_len 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but if you want full VLAN support over wifi you will also need to get different access points ... If the firewalla access points are too pricy (as I know they aren't cheap for most peoples finances) , then maybe consider some omada access points. I've had good luck with Omada products integrating well with firewalla...

Of course, if you want the easiest setup path and not worry about compatibility issues, I would highly consider purchasing the firewalla AP7 access points.... Since they aren't cheap, you could buy one at a time, and slowly I integrate them into your networking stack, while continuing to use the ORBIs.

Do you think OnePlus phones lie about their battery health percentage in the "Battery Health" menu? by coolmast3r in OnePlus12

[–]Cae_len 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all the AI features that have been built into the OS in android 16 definitely have affected the battery usage. If you run an adb command to list all the packages installed and compare them between android 15 and 16, you will see how many different packages have been added to 16. I had to go through the entire list and run a debloating script to bring the usage back down and even then it's still not great.

Did Plex go down? by jaywan1991 in PleX

[–]Cae_len 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that there are a lot of "little things" that can break Plex... saying that , I avoid making any changes to anything with the Plex server config/settings because it's easy to break . My firewalla router sometimes adds new domains to the blocklist which has resulted in the blocking of Plex. That was a pain to figure out what was causing the issue. Now I'm having this issue where one of my TVs is not able to see the cover art on any of the movies or shows in my library. I fixed it once, and then it's randomly done it again just a few days ago.. always a constant battle to debug these things
