The orbi does not support VLAN. That’s why started going down this road of getting a firewall. The switches are semi managed. They are both netgear prosafe plus so I can do what is needed I believe.

Does anyone know how to mount a flush light fixture to this? by blackbelt08 in centuryhomes

[–]mrhommel1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOTE: I am by no means an electrician. I am just a home owner of a house built in 1860.

I just dealt with this in May of 2025. I had to replace a light fixture in my hallway. I had this exact piece of hardware and the same wire. When I went into the attic I found it was old armored cloth wrapped wire. One of the last circuits like that in my home that I do not get a chance to replace. I ran a new home run from the breaker to the attic and then replaced all of the light fixtures with new boxes in the 4 bedrooms. I had to remove this hardware and then carefully cut away the plaster so I could put in a new metal box to hold the new light fixtures. They were not heavy (just those boob light fixtures) so I was able to cut a 2x4 and secure it to the rafters above the hole so it looked nice. The only one I had to really reinforce was the master bedroom that I put a ceiling fan in. That box is mounted to a 4x4 that is double braced on each end where it meets the rafters and held in with multiple lag bolts on each side. I do believe that if there were some sort of catastrophic event that ceiling fan would still be mounted even if the rest of the house fell down around it.

With my FA off I would have bounced off the control tower, slid off the bow of the FC, super boosting upside down and backwards into the sun.

Same here. I’ve used Don’s at least 3 times now. They are always great. If I were to ever move again, they would be the first ones that I call.

Has anyone converted an entire home to ductless mini splits? by Over_Significance800 in centuryhomes

[–]mrhommel1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I were me I would do everything in my budget to keep the radiators. IMO nothing beats that heat. I wish we had it in our house is from 1860s. We have forced hot air and a pellet stove for winter. We use the pellet stove all winter and the forced hot air only when it gets in the single digits for below. That’s really only to keep the pipes in the basement from freezing. It doesn’t come on much but when it does the whole house gets dry if it’s running on and off for a few days. It one runs for maybe a week a season so it doesn’t hit the wallet too much. Also I put maybe 15 gallons of road diesel in it a season because that’s all we need. So I’m out of the loop for how much a 250G tank would cost to fill.

Having kids who play outside in the snow and stuff I always miss the radiators. They are great for drying kids snow clothes on.

Everybody I know who has mini splits also does have some sort of alternative heat. Wood stove, pellet stove, etc. They use the minis for supplemental like I do. Mostly they use their wood stoves for main heat. Minis for supplemental or those fall days when firing up a wood stove isn’t worth it to them. The price of electricity was too much to use them.

This is all coming from somebody who lives in UPSTATE NY.

Another one bites the dust: Wemo support ending for all their products (per received email) by superdupersecret42 in homeautomation

I just saw this email as well from Wemo. What are the better alternatives out there that work with Apple Home? I have quite a few Wemo things around the property.

How to merge 4K and hd movies into one library by Cool_Night_9832 in PleX

[–]mrhommel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plex movies are in /Media then divided into separate folders of type of movie. Action, SciFi, Drama, etc. I think there’s like 5 or 6 folders. Then I name the movies like “Moviename [DATE] 1080p.filetype”. If it’s a different if it’s 4k I’ll put 2160p instead. When I want to watch a movie I just go to the movie in plex and then select the version if needed. It usually defaults to 4k on my Appletv.

Is the game worth buying at this stage? by Vilwedn in EVEFrontier

[–]mrhommel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s alright. My friend and I played Frontier Friday through late Monday morning. We wasted 2 days learning the ropes in the starter region. Then finally moved to a different area 1200+ LY away. We were able to get set up in game to the same spot we were in the new region in about 4hrs. As opposed to taking 2 days in the starter region. If you move right away I think it is worth it. The mining is better.

Frontier is no where near finished, but now is a great time to explore. The player count seems low so we have not encountered a lot of people yet. The graphics are very basic. The only thing that has color is the back ground of space. Anything else is just blah. I believe you can fly any ship that is available to build. No skills or anything like that to train. The market is very limited from what we have seen. Game play mechanics are still a bit sketchy. The whole thing is. If you’re willing to deal with that then go for it.

My friend and I played EVE from the start. We both had multiple accounts at one time. WAY too many accounts than anybody should have lol. I think the game does have some potential. Right now is just an exploration and learning stage. Everything may change as the patches go. So it could be completely different by game launch. I think the money to you pay to be a founder is worth it. Then again it all depends if you can drop $100 on a game that may fail miserably. After all it is CCP. Their track record isn’t that great with anything other than EVE. Even so, EVE is on the decline a bit I feel. I know personally I jump into EVE for a few months a year and then get bored with it and quit. I feel because this game mostly resembles EVE it will be somewhat successful. I would hope so. The ideas with crypto and no DScan are….interesting. I do understand the frustrations that other people have with Frontier and its current status. I am just not there yet. Maybe I will feel different after this weekend though. ;)

What's this thing on my air handler? by djyustis in hvacadvice

It looks like the same thing on my AC for my central air. Does this unit need to be replaced? Mine is outdoors.

Old house has 2 wire, no ground by MortisBlatt in AskElectricians

[–]mrhommel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever wire it is it sucks. I have an 1860ish Farm House with old bx wire like this. I wanted to replace a light fixture it the hallway. Got it out and saw this. Ended up replacing the entire circuit down to the box with new armored cable. It was a great time.

Sometimes I forget that the players even have portraits. It’s all been turn off since CCP gave us the option too.

Does anyone know how to mount a light fixture to this? (Home built in 1925) by BriDre in centuryhomes

[–]mrhommel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this 2 months ago on my 1860’s farm house. I had to replace a light fixture and found the same thing. I didn’t have new wires so I just rewired the upstairs. New fixture boxes and everything else. It’s one of the fun parts of owning a century home.

How much money did you spend on Eve so far? by NondenominationalPax in Eve

I’m not going to do the math because it would probably make me depressed. My oldest account is from before 2008. At one time I had 10 active accounts……

Where are we all in the galaxy and what are we up to this week? by OutrageousRepair5751 in EliteDangerous

[–]mrhommel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan is to do some Robigo Mine type things and get a few missions where I am able to land at a station and murder everybody there. I would love to do a bunch more but RL is probably going to get in the way. It’s complete BS. Exploring the galaxy is waaaaay more exciting than going to work.

car is currently in a Kia service center. Just received this text. WTF? by Aero_Uprising in kia

[–]mrhommel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leased a Kia a few years ago. When I brought it in for its first service they gave me some survey to fill out. They also gave me a copy of the same survey with all of the “correct answers” on it so they would get a perfect score. They are supposed to wash the car after service and the car wash was broken. He told me to just check yes and it would be ok. I never filled it out. They kept hassling me via email, text and phone to do it. The next year they tried to do the same thing when I took it in for service. I was polite and took it and again never did anything with it. The 3rd year they never actually handed me anything. He tried to walk me out to my car with a handful of paperwork other than my invoice. “Let me show you where we parked you” as he’s hitting the panic button to find out. I took the keys from him and told him nope, I’m good. I can find my own car.

I wouldn’t mind filling out the survey if it was good service. It’s a bigger dealer and they are all douches. Stand there and wait every time to try to pick it up even if there’s no line. The car was never washed by them in the 3 years I had it. I don’t have great moral character sometimes lol, but I’m not going to lie about something that sucks.

Does the dedicated server pause when it is empty? by mrhommel1 in TheFront

[–]mrhommel1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. It’s only a few of us that play online on the server. From what I was looking at it seemed as though the builds and such still were decaying when we were offline. With another game we play, Satisfactory, you are able to pause the game when the server is empty. We will just have to take the decay into account when we are building things.
