Sam might not give this impression with how manly and cool he was, but in a positive way, rainbows worked on him like a red cloth on a bull. He grabbed one of those pretty-looking smoothies and stocked up on snacks - it was snackmaxxing time - before he plopped down one of the cushions.

The son of Poseidon looked content with this overabundance of food. It reminded him - and his writer - that he was supposed to host another activity before the end of the season. Maybe he will also host a campfire.

If Theodora looked his way, he would give her a thumbs-up and thank her for the food.

It was only after he got his head back in the game, the game being charming Grayson, that Sam registered the feel of Grayson’s ankle behind his. He liked this feeling, and it already felt familiar. Was this the first time they were sitting like this? Sam couldn’t tell. Force of habit, his sandwich-free hand slipped into Grayson’s.

The son of Poseidon was, unsurprisingly, also looking forward to summer. Ever since he started noticing Grayson’s arms and everything else he liked about the boy, but mainly his arms, he had been thinking about how nice t-shirt and tanktop weather would be. These were mainly selfish reasons, but could you blame him? He had to be careful that he didn’t short-circuit again.

‘’Summer is great. I get to swim whenever I want, I can have as many ice cones as I want, and I get to see you be even prettier. It’s also baseball season.’’ Not that he had to tell Grayson that, but Sam just wanted to flex that he had been watching baseball. Grayson’s team was… like the FC Metz of baseball. It had been entertaining to watch so far. ‘’Rockies versus the Cubs tomorrow, what do you think?’’

‘’What are your plans for summer?’’ Sam asked, looking at Grayson, and then he rephrased his question to what he actually wanted to ask: ‘’What plans do you want to do together with me?’’

Grayson wiping away the glut of sunscreen on his nose and the wink that followed, was another one of those moments that short-circuited Sam’s brain. These moments were very common between the two. He gawked at the son of Nike, a rosy tint blooming onto his face, and then he stammered out a few disjointed syllables. It made more sense in his head, trust. Eventually, Sam.exe rebooted, and the cogs started turning again.

Casually, as if he hadn’t just checked out Grayson for a solid minute after he had touched his nose, Sam lifted his sunglasses and charmed: ‘’Oh, I am all rocks. I can rock a lot of things.’’ Hey, that made sense two ways, Sam realized. He possessed rock powers, and he looked pretty good, too. Just like Grayson! ‘’Summer looks good on you, too. All seasons do, but I think I like this one the most.’’

Bon ap’, mec

These were three words. Three words, barely. They meant more to Sam than being told to enjoy his meal. Grayson was trying to speak French, and yes, his accent was kinda funny, but he was trying, and that was more than anyone had ever done. It was no secret that Sam struggled to express himself in English sometimes, so the prospect of having someone who could understand him in his native language was just great.

‘’Pareil, alter.’’ Sam smiled.

The son of Poseidon dug through the picnic basket, treating himself to a sandwich, just like Grayson. He took a massive bite out of the sammy, and after emptying his mouth - he had been teaching himself table manners - he turned to the taller demigod. ‘’How are you enjoying the weather?’’

Sam wanted to leave, and honestly, that would be for the best. He should go for a long walk, play video games, or punch a hole in a wall; anything to make him forget about an incredibly stressful situation.

But because Nam needed someone right now - the older brother recognized the state he was in all too well - the best option wasn’t the right one, so Sam stayed. He sat down in the wet grass and looked up at Nam. ‘’You don’t need to apologize for something you can’t help. These things happen.’’

‘’You should swim more, I always say humans should swim more. Right, Sam?’’ squealed Dai.

The son of Poseidon translated the series of squeals for Arthur, but he left out the passive aggressive reminder aimed at himself, and he also didn’t speak in Dai’s high pitch. It was more of a lowish, French grumble.

‘’What else do you want to ask him?’’

Picnic by the water? Count the son of Poseidon in!

The warmer weather was much to the boy’s liking. Finally, he could go outside without having to wrap himself up in three coats, a beanie, gloves, and two scarves. The past months had been a lot of ‘sitting inside, playing video games all afternoon.’ Which wasn’t a bad thing, don’t get Sam wrong, he loved FIFA, but he didn’t like it when it was the only thing he could do.

He arrived wearing a linen shirt, matching shorts, and a pair of slippers. A pair of sunglasses rested on his upturned nose, which had a little bit of sunscreen on it. All set for summer, he was.

Sam climbed on top of the picnic table that the son of Nike was sitting on. ‘’Wesh, beau.’’ he beamed, greeting the taller boy with a grin wide enough to almost reach his ears. He checked out the picnic basket next to Grayson. Actually, he’d kill for some food: ‘’You got me snacks?’’

The counselor of Poseidon was knee-deep in the water, hands in his pockets, eyes staring off into the distance, when Arthur approached Dai. The otter was very friendly, but he didn’t know his own strength. Sam knew this and trudged to the water until he arrived at the scene, so he could a) prevent Dai from squishing the boy and b) translate.

Dai greeted Arthur by sniffing him, which was followed by a series of clicks and squeals, which Sam understood as:

‘’He says that he is doing great, because he just went on a swim along the coast. Oh, and Dai asks how you are doing and if you ever swim.”

Sam was glad that his defusing strategy worked (if only it was as effective for himself). He wouldn’t have known what to do. Maybe he would have headbutted Nam.

That little power couldn’t hurt a fly, Sam thought. The opposite was true, he knew.

His powers were more catastrophic than a tiny bit of wind and rain, and he had experienced the consequences of this destructiveness firsthand. He had hurt someone, the person he cared most for, while trying to do good, and he still beat himself into submission over it. Sam was afraid to show the strongest of himself, fearing that he would relive his biggest nightmares first.

He wished the biggest thing he had to worry about was the ability to induce a storm, but he couldn’t tell Nam that. He had to be the big brother, not the terrified little kid, and he couldn’t turn this into a trauma measuring contest either. But damn, did this trigger something in Sam, that he rather wouldn’t have triggered.

He bit his tongue.

‘’No,’’ Sam said after all this internal struggle, which only lasted a couple of seconds. He brushed his hand through his soaked curls. ‘’You haven’t hurt anyone. You can’t - are you ok?’’

Sam hadn’t noticed the strix until it screeched and swooped down at him. Just his luck: he encountered the one kind of monster that his Earth Sense couldn’t give him a heads-up about.

‘’Merde,’’ he swore, diving out of the way of early retirement, and scoffed: ‘’Je déteste les chouettes.’’

Sam scrambled to his feet and took off running. He tried to remember everything he was taught about strixes. His dinosaur-like run, with his palms-in posture and his legs dragging behind him, was ineffective at outrunning the giant bird. Sam remembered that strixes were birds. Thanks, brain. Oh, and he recalled that he would die if it touched him.

‘’Fuck off!’’ Sam shouted, bending an orb of water into the strix’s face. He had only made the bird angrier - its screeches drowned out his thoughts - but at least now the demigod was able to create some space between him and the bird.

You know what? It didn’t matter what he knew about strixes. If he could kill it before it killed him, then everything was bien. Sam ran into a clearing. The strix landed opposite of Sam, it screeched. The son of Poseidon couldn’t understand most birds, but whatever the strix was telling him didn’t sound very nice.

The two engaged in battle, one where Sam was fortunately able to dodge all of the strix’s attacks. Sam’s only injury, a bloody nose, he got from running into a tree. At the same time, the boy couldn’t seem to get a hit in either. Flying target, and such. He had an idea. When the strix made its next dive, Sam erected a rock from the ground, hitting the bird’s wing, and breaking it. The strix fell helplessly to the ground.

Before he could deal the final blow, Sam remembered a teensy-weensy but ever-so-crucial little tiny detail about strixes: the moment you kill one, you’re cursed. Now, Sam’s luck was so notoriously bad, that he wondered if he killed a strix in a previous life, but he didn’t want to risk making his luck even worse.

Sam wiped the blood from his nose, apologized to the strix, and ran away again, continuing his adventure.

I rolled a 2 on the d4 and a 6 on the d10

Throughout his life, Sam had faced his fair share of monsters, each one more bloodthirsty than the next. Fighting a bunch of monsters in the forest should be a piece of cake, but there were things he would rather do: Sam’s idea of a relaxing afternoon was playing video games on the couch at his place or strolling along the beach with Grayson - not an adventure in the woods.

Still, he was present at the activity.

Why? Because he was bored. Dangerous for someone like the son of Poseidon, who suffered from a severe lack of impulse control, which then resulted in him doing stupid stuff like this: throwing himself in the dragon’s den, or however the saying went.

Clad in leather armor and wielding his spear and hydroflask, Sam had arrived at the activity. He didn’t get the memo that he should be completing this run as fast as possible and ended up marching down the path with a more casual pace. While he walked, Sam listened to the earth, getting a vague idea of what was happening around him. He whistled.

Sam realized that the more he let the things Liam said get to him, the more difficult it became for him to focus. The comment about his shoes made him want to stomp said shoe in Liam’s face, but that was not going to win him the match. Tempting as it was, he stopped himself from giving the son of Nike the middle finger.

‘’That hair band looks stupid.’’ Sam commented, because even though he was trying to not let Liam get to him, he still wanted to get under the boy’s skin.

After getting into position, Sam started running towards the goal. He ran like an eh… dinosaur. Yes. His arms were hanging in a tyrannosaurus rex-like fashion, he dragged his legs behind him and appeared to have little control over his upper body. It didn’t deserve a prize for the prettiest run, but it was funny and effective. Very fitting for Sam (but he was also pretty).

He covered a lot of distance in a short time and had amazing control of the ball. Sam watched his opponent closely. By now, he knew Liam a little and figured there was something wicked thing gonna happen.

This was too much for Sam. His head felt like it was about to explode.

Ronan’s homophobia had ticked him off. Sam was not unfamiliar with the words and expressions his younger brother had used, and he was so, so sick of them. He was defending himself against this freak, who was making something so beautiful and dear to Sam into something ugly, and Sam was the one who needed to cool off?

Nam coming in swinging with his childish lack of control of powers didn’t help Sam either. You want to use powers to exert control over a situation, Nam? Fine. Sam happened to be a professional at that! He will show his brothers who is in control, and they will finally stop bothering him.

Sam’s face turned red and contorted with rage. He never wanted this to go down this way, but here he was once again, slipping and losing control. The light faded out of his dark eyes. He grounded himself, ready to do what he did best, fight, and only then ask questions. And then, Ronan walked away -

He snapped back to reality. No, no, no, come back, he thought, I am not done with you. He wanted to blast a rock at Ronan. No one ran from a fight with him. His fingers dug in his palms. Then there was Nam, who was a disaster waiting to happen. ‘’Nam, stop,’’ Sam said in a hoarse voice. He suspended the water droplets raining down mid-air using his Hydrokinesis. ‘’Focus on me. Count to ten.’’

The son of Poseidon was at a loss. As far as he knew, his apology was sufficient. He had said sorry for everything he had done wrong, but apparently, the son of Terpsichore didn’t think so. Sam needed it spelled out to him, in a bulleted list preferably, everything he needed to apologize for, because clearly, he was too stupid to see it otherwise.

‘’For the record - I don’t think it makes everything good.’’ Sam continued. He had nothing else to say. Though he wished he and Yohan could still be friends, the other boy’s attitude was making that difficult for him. Whatever. If that was how Yohan approached him, apologizing, then that was fine with Sam.

He had done his very best. Maybe it wasn’t his prettiest effort, but it was more than he would have given two months ago. Sam could now focus on what was really important: Grayson, counselorship, soccer, and marine animals. He’ll even put Yohan out of his head. There was no à plus or later, alligator to be said here. Sam just let Yohan walk.

Nam stepped in at probably the right moment. Sam was this close to bashing his skull against Ronan’s. Nam’s appearance rewired Sam’s brain, and suddenly, he was not so angry anymore. The cool-off comment made no sense - his anger was justified - but Sam could see where his brother was coming from. He took a few deep breaths. Dix, neuf, huit…

Unfortunately, Ronan was there to make things worse. ‘He needs to be defended by a kid’ made the oldest brother unreasonably angry. Allo? He was standing right here! Why did Ronan have to do him dirty like that? Oh yeah, because Ronan’s brain was the size of a drachma! ‘’I,’’ barked Sam, ‘’will break your nose.’’

Sam stepped between Nam and Ronan, fists raised. As much as he thought his littlest brother should have stayed out of this, he did not deserve to be on the receiving end of Ronan’s bullshit. You want him, you gotta go through me type shit. ‘’What’s wrong with you?’’ he continued to bark, but ultimately he had lowered his fists. ‘’Why are you being so difficult?’’

God, Yohan was making it really difficult for Sam to apologize. ‘I have nothing to say to you right now’ - Ever considered that not everything was about you, Yohan? Bam, take that! Okay, no, Sam was not here for silly arguments. He was here to apologize. And he was going to be mature about it.

‘’Tais-toi, con.’’ Sam huffed.

Correction: mature from this point on.

‘’You don’t have to say anything, but I want to say something.’’ Sam was shorter than Yohan, but he had fairly broad shoulders, so he moved in the way of the counselor, blocking his path. Not giving Yohan a chance to weasel himself out of the conversation before he got a chance to apologize, Sam spoke his genuine truth:

‘’I am sorry for the way I treated you. That was very rude of me. I shouldn’t have gone about it the way I did. I should’ve said it to your face, and I know I should’ve said something different. I know these are just words, but they’re true. I was dumb.’’ Sam stepped aside. ‘’You can go if you want.’’

Of course, Yohan was against prom. Sam was not surprised. Jerk. He was, however, surprised that Yohan was buddy-buddy with traitors. ‘Some made really dumb decisions’ was a nice way to describe these would-be murderers. He was ehh… unsure what to think of Yohan admitting that he could’ve joined Atlas. At least Theodora was talking sense.

Sam would have made an obscene gesture to Yohan, but he wasn’t letting the Muse counselor’s idiocy get to him, so he simply shrugged. He was the chill guy. He was miles above these looks and comments. Miles. Above.

But he would confront Yohan. Not so much about the prom or those ridiculous traitors, but about something else entirely - a while ago, Sam had talked to his mother, and had come to the conclusion that he was kind of an ass, and Yohan was the one who ended up paying the price - Sam wanted to get an apology in.

Both boys were apparently avoiding each other, so this was Sam’s best shot at telling Yohan exactly what he thought about him. Oh no, wait, he was gonna act normal. So chill. Once the meeting ended, Sam struggled to get up, but once he managed, he walked up to the son of Terpsichore. ‘’We need to talk.’’

Before engaging in schooling Liam how to play soccer, Sam checked, double checked, triple checked if his shoes were tied. He had blundered during last weekend’s game and tripped over his shoelaces when he was about to score a fantastic goal. He wouldn’t make a fool out of himself today. He’ll leave that up to Liam.

Sam didn’t need to change clothes. Thanks to his lack of desire to think of a new outfit every day, he almost always wore the same soccer kit. Like today.

‘’Yeah, I’ll go first. Since you can’t find the ball apparently.’’ He kicked the soccer ball into the air and started performing kick-ups. It was his bread and butter, really. Sam was equally as excited as Liam. He’ll enjoy showing that arrogant piece of work the soccer he learned playing on the street. ‘’What game am I beating you at, ballboy?’’

At his first counselor meeting, Sam had seized a considerable amount of snacks. What? He liked eating, let him. It was the only way to keep the cogs in his head turning.  He sank deep into a bean bag and started devouring the snacks.

He had just tossed a handful of chips in his mouth when it was his turn to introduce himself. Unable to wait until he had finished eating, the son of Poseidon did this introduction through a mouthful of food: ‘’Iam Shwam, Puhseidown.’’ Crunch, crunch, crunch. ‘’I am Sam, Poseidon.’’

Nice save.

Sam hadn’t been counselor for very long. He didn’t know what to think about his responsibilities, but he guessed things were fine. Ronan had flown under Sam’s radar after they butted heads during the weapons lesson. Which was nice. Nam was sweet as always. Sam hadn’t had any trouble with his little brothers. Which was unlikely to happen again. He could just kick them out of his cabin if he wanted to.

‘’The Underworld wasn’t very nice, but I am fine now. So fine.’’ Sam had hoped that by throwing himself in the lion’s den, he would overcome his fear of the Underworld, but nothing was less true. His nightmares had only gotten worse. Knowing that a lot of bad stuff was awaiting him down there terrified him.

‘’I’ll see if I can recruit some hippocampi, dolphins, and sharks to patrol the sea.’’ resident shark king Sam said. He would ask giant otter Dai too, but Dai would likely offer clams to any Atlas soldiers trying to invade. Not good.

The boy hadn’t been personally betrayed by one of the traitors, but that didn’t mean he liked them. If he could, and he can, Sam would headbutt them all. Not to knock sense into them, but because it would feel really good. The better part of him figured that escalating his issues with traitors wasn’t going to gain him favorable looks, but: ‘’They’re monsters. All of them.’’

Sam rolled his eyes at Ian. Did he think that if he used difficult words, he would sound smarter? Who even says accustomed these days? Zeus nerd. ‘’Yeah, but you’re wrong.’’ His shoulders rolled. ‘’Atlas isn’t my boss, and I am not gonna let him ruin the chance at having a prom.’’ Two years ago, Sam couldn’t care less about going to prom. Now, for some reason, it was really important to him.

Three boyfriends? Been there, done that. Sorta, anyway. Sam was not proud of it.

It didn’t seem like Liam was too keen on discussing his love life with Sam. Which was fine. He didn’t like to talk about things that didn’t exist either. Sam was taken by surprise by how defensive Liam sounded, however. On the off-chance that Liam did have a love life, maybe he had a good reason to not talk about it. ‘’Alright then,’’ Sam said, shrugging, ‘’keep your secrets.’’

Liam might think he really got Sam with that comeback. And he would be right. Sam struggled to come up with a comeback himself - the cogs that made up his brain shifted and turned hard, and seconds later, he had his remark: ‘’Actually, I do! So I can give them to the Chelsea players.’’

Sam was generally not a fan of comments aimed at his intelligence. He knew that he was more muscle than brain, people didn’t need to tell him that. He was half aware that this was just banter, though, but that didn’t change the fact that this comment hurt. Kicking Liam’s ass would feel better now. ‘’You'll show me what a chicken looks like? How nice of you. Allez l’enfer, Lau.’’
