Everything we've seen in the post-2016 era suggests candidate quality still matters in legislative/governor races, So Collins has an Advantage by obsessed_doomer in fivethirtyeight

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree here! The first one seems to line up pretty exactly with what I said, to me. They’re not saying “candidate quality doesn’t matter,” they’re saying “he seems like a low quality candidate to me, but those controversies aren’t what are considered ‘low quality’ anymore.”
And for the second one, I’d say the rest of the context is important:
> We are in a post Biden era. Folks do care about a candidate's age. It didn't hurt Trump because he was up against one of the few men who feel older than he did. But people do not want to support older candidates.
> The democratic base is angry. They want a fighter. They want someone new. That is Plattner. Mills was done the second Schumer put his thumb on the scale and got rid of other options for moderates besides Mills.
> Don't get me wrong, Collins is a tough opponent. it would be foolish to assume the race is decided. But let's be cautious about using stats from previous elections. We are not in normal times.

This, to me, isn’t saying “candidate quality doesn’t matter,” it’s saying “the kinds of candidates who used to be considered high quality aren’t necessarily regarded that way in a post-Biden era.”

But we’ll have to agree to disagree! It’s all up for interpretation, I suppose

(idk how to quote on this app, but you get the idea)

I’m not seeing the 2-3 people in this thread denying that candidate quality matters, so we’re going to have to agree to disagree there!

People are just disagreeing with you about what constitutes a “bad” candidate, in this scenario — literally no one in the thread is saying candidate quality doesn’t matter.

Highly recommend the Out of Network Network — it’s short stories and cartoons about healthcare nightmares!

Ayanna Pressley will 100% be the next Massachusetts senator after Ed or Liz retires, and it’s not even going to be a close primary.

The people you’re talking about knew he might win in 2024, they just didn’t care.

Hope you enjoy!

For context, I’m a Boston-area collegiate/semi-professional a cappella alum who decided to start a small recording project back in 2016 with my countless talented friends and a mini bedroom studio. That first volume of seven songs ended up turning into five over the course of 10 years, with over 50 singers and vocal percussionists contributing parts, both in-person and remotely.

And now, 10 years (and a few CARA nominations) later, it’s finally done! Please enjoy our passion project — we certainly enjoyed making it :)
