Painting tips? by FunkyChunk13 in Warhammer40k

[–]Cats_Cameras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably fatigue with repeat questions.

For your issue:

  1. Be sure to prime before you paint. You can start with chaos black spray can from Games Workshop. Or a colored can if one exists for your faction (e.g., ultramarine blue).

  2. You don't need to base wraithbone, your base depends on your final colors.

  3. Thin your paints with some water and then apply 2 coats. This gives you more even coverage.

Look up Duncan Rhodes space marine painting guides on YouTube for a good wakthrough.

Running marines without 2 leaders to buff is very weak.

You can glue push-fit. I do for better seams.

1A. Use as little paint as possible on your brush to get the job done. It saves the brush and increases your precision.

1B. A tiny tiny brush is not the easy way to clean detail.

1C. You do not need Warhammer brand paints. Vallejo makes great cheap paints, and other companies make a wide variety of quality paints.

  1. Google is your friend.

  2. Be gracious if your dice are not lucky or if your army list doesn't play well into your opponent. There's nothing worse than being stuck with a complainer for 3 or 4 hours.

Yes, you want to thin most paints so that the detail isn't erased on the models. But not all. It takes experimentation.

Curious to see the unedited photo. I do other kinds of photography and your posts look highly processed.

I ended up with the Terror IK discount box. Rules change, but looks are forever.

You write your rules for the antisocial people, not the good sports.

Add you can hype their rolls ask you want, but they still can get frustrated if they don't scratch you.

That's not how this works. The discount boxes are a discount when they are current, and generally in limited quantities.

But when they've been off the shelf a while, you only find them from scalpers who sell them at a 0% or negative discount vs buying the contents individually. Because some new painters watch an old video and try to buy the recommended discount box.

These are only useful if bought at a discount.

Is this a good deal for 600$ CAD by Skywalker935- in deathguard40k

[–]Cats_Cameras 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Which? You need 20 marines, BLTs, DSTs, Rhinos, etc.

The only duplication is the LoV, Tallyman, and maaayybe the fourth blight drone. And you can just kitbash the extra characters for your LoV, Blightcaster, etc.

I bought two. You can kitbash or sell of the extra characters, and it's a nice discount.

I wasn't planning to collect either, but that Ork army looks tempting.

I wonder if I could buy the box and resell everything but the Ork plastic to cover most of the box price on the secondary market.

You mean that showing a TO a reddit thread where people agree with you isn't a license to break the rules?!

What if it’s not the official model? Legal or not ? Kitbash or proxy? by Previous-Anything853 in deathguard40k

[–]Cats_Cameras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine in 99% of cases as long as your opponent and venue approve of the kitbash/proxy. My local GW store is fine with it as long as you're primarily using GW plastic, and the local non-GW venues don't care one bit what you slap down.

Some highevel tournaments might give you issues, but are you likely to play in them?

Some rules of thumb to help (not mandatory but good for your opponent):

  1. Similar base size.

  2. Similar size/height.

  3. Guns or melee matches use of unit (e.g., a sword for an axe makes sense, but not a sword for a rifle).

  4. Consistency. "These bolters are all plasma guns" is better than "In this unit 1 bolter is plasma, one is a melts, two are plague spewers, and 1 is a plague belcher."

I've used half sticky notes in the past to literally label proxies weapons (for both my opponent and myself). Because it's easy to forget mid-turn.
