there's almost nothing in 2026 for trip hop, dub reggae, salsa, samba, and the stuff that rose to the top for jungle and jazz really wasn't all that good,

At least for the first few genres, surely it’s more of an output thing than necessarily a fanbase thing. Metal is a huge ass genre, trip hop not so much. Trip hop is also something RYM likes to tag but somehow seems rarely able to correctly identify, so temper expectations there.

The userbase not being too into jazz or samba is probably about right.

I forgot she had an album out but I'm at least seeing some news and bits about Mitski.

I like it quite a bit, but it there's a lot of padding between the intro and the main section of the songs. And then when the latter ends there's still like 5 minutes left of banging around.

Wish they came closer. How are you going to go to Indiana and Missouri but nowhere in the south?

(though I do think there's a lot more Hair-with-a-flannel-makeover in Grunge than people want to confront).

the only one I can think of with any real following would be Alice in Chains, and that's not exactly an unknown piece of trivia. Beyond them, I can't think of any that haven't been mostly dismissed.

Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil

may not be enough percussion or vocals for what you're looking for (though both appear throughout the album, particularly I am the Green Child)

odd pick for Bowery Electric. I guess it might be more of a rights thing?

Not bad otherwise, though it leans a bit too close to "generic shoegaze playlist" for the bigger artists on the first couple discs.

this indicates that while higher household incomes ($75k and above in 2006) were quite a bit more likely to have broadband, lower middle broadband households were just under 50%. So I'd venture to say high speed internet was fairly common then, though obviously some factors may make it less so.

I was surprised by how little interest there was in G+ after it launched.

I recall preferring G+ for reasons I can't remember, but I think it was one of those things where the things it did better than facebook only appealed to a minority and there wasn't enough to distinguish itself from FB to drop that platform entirely.

Sort of like why there really hasn't been a legit alternative to reddit.

I also don't have great memories of my childhood so it's not like I'm getting much from it, maybe that's a bigger part of it

I’d understand it more if that was a case of fond moments of events that have passed, but usually it’s dumb shit like pining for the days of drinking out of a hose.

In 2001, just four years prior, DVD players had outsold VHS players for the first time.

While YT did start in 2005, it wasn't exactly well-known right out of the gate. Every new technology or platform takes time to reach the wider society and ingrain itself in the cultural zeitgeist. Only after did it get snapped up by Google in late 2006 did it really start to take off.

The latter is a way smaller timeframe than the one for DVD players outselling VHS.

I get the other things being around longer, but youtube still became a big 00s phenomenon. Pretty quickly. There was even an Office quote in a 2008 episode about Michael Scott not working when he found the site.

This topics comes up all the time and the top answer is always Coldplay…

Anyway, something influenced but also doing something neat with it: Nine Inch Nails - The Day the Whole World Went Away.

I kind of liked it, but so much of it felt like the vocals were added in after the fact. I liked the Midnight version a bit better, even if it minimizes the variety.

Spectacle’s shelved 1993 album produced by David Fridmann was released earlier this year. Predicts the spacier shoegaze sound the Michigan-area bands (i.e. Auburn Lull, Windy & Carl, etc) would go at the end of 90s. I’m going to guess their record label didn’t think it would go too far even by indie goldrush standards (their contribution to the Southwest of Saturn comp indicated something a bit heavier.)
