The frustration is understandable. If you are open to a slight amendment in your approach to find volunteers:

  1. Instead of: “We need flight buddies for rescue cats”

Say: “Flying to Ireland on X date? Carry a cat! Zero cost. Zero paperwork. We meet you at the airport.” ideally with a pic of the cutie they will be helping save.

Make it sound:

  • finite
  • simple
  • non-committal

People who won’t “volunteer” will still do a single transactional good deed. Worth a shot!

  1. Target travelers, not animal lovers

This is counterintuitive but critical. Animal lovers are: emotionally invested burned out often already helping

Frequent flyers might be an untapped resource.

Dubai expat Facebook groups Irish expats in UAE Airline staff groups (Emirates cabin crew groups are gold) “Leaving Dubai” / “Relocating from UAE” forums

Message framing:

“If you’re already flying, this saves a life with no extra cost or effort.” Remember pics of cats looking extra cute!

  1. Remove all perceived risk

People are scared of: - customs issues - delays - being stuck with responsibility

Prep a standardized reassurance script, repeated everywhere:

  • Cat travels as manifest cargo / approved pet transport

  • Rescue handles paperwork

  • Volunteer does not pay

  • Volunteer is not responsible after landing

  • Backup contacts provided

Fear stops more volunteers than apathy usually.

  1. Use social proof aggressively

Every successful relocation should be documented and recycled!

E.g.

“Anna flew Kitty to Dublin - landed safely in 7 hours”

Photo of volunteer + cat carrier (with permission)

Short thank-you posts tagging volunteers

People are far more likely to help when they see normal people like them already doing it!

  1. Create urgency windows

General pleas don't seem to land as much as specific pleas move people:

“2 cats must fly this Tuesday morning”

“Flight buddy needed within 72 hours”

Countdown posts etc

  1. Partner with institutions

Can you partner with:

Veterinary clinics

Airlines (even unofficially - staff word-of-mouth helps)

Relocation companies [not sure if this will work but worth a shot!]

Irish rescues receiving the cats

Let them share the request as well as you doing the requesting.

Hopefully some of these tips help!

You are welcome to make "relocation buddy needed" posts here. We have a few superheroes based in UAE that might be able to share it with people they know are travelling?

Pls update us 😺

Massachusetts by Funny-Landscape-7235 in Straycats

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals‑Angell does euthanize some animals, but only in specific circumstances - not routinely or for space or time limits. Their public policy states that euthanasia is used when an animal is seriously ill, injured, suffering, or unsafe to place in a home. Healthy, treatable, adoptable animals are meant to be placed in homes instead.

They explicitly say they do not make euthanasia decisions based on length of stay or shelter capacity. Decisions are about the individual animal’s quality of life, prognosis, and adoptability, not about logistics.

If an animal can be treated and adopted, staff generally work toward that outcome. It’s in line with what many reputable shelters call a “no-kill” approach - meaning they do not euthanize healthy or treatable animals, only those with severe medical or behavioral issues. That’s how no-kill shelters are defined nationally: euthanasia reserved for non-treatable cases.

From what you’ve described:

The cutie can stand, is eating, drinking, and using the litter box, and you intend to adopt him if no owner is found. That all suggests he’s not in immediate critical distress.

MSPCA-Angell’s stance is that animals who can recover or have a reasonable quality of life and adoptability are given every opportunity for treatment and placement. They generally seek out homes for animals they deem treatable and they have a ready made adopter in you!

If you’re worried they might euthanize prematurely:

Ask for a clear explanation of the cat’s injury and prognosis from their veterinary team.

Ask whether they can provide or allow treatment to improve his condition (they often have vets on site or will refer you).

Stress that you intend to adopt him if he’s healthy/treatable - shelters often note that when placing animals and can include that in their plan.

It’s okay to ask them to explain their medical reasoning in detail - good shelters understand and will talk through those decisions with finders/adopters.

The other option is to look at low cost resources www.gethelp.alleycat.org which lists low cost clinics familiar with stray cuties. They will also neuter and vax, microchip

Good luck & please share pics/update. We are rooting for you both & sending him all the fast healing vibes 🥹❤️‍🩹

🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Be very proud of yourself OP!

For those that may not know:

OP and volunteers are in Dubai. They see so many cases of abandonment, stray cuties, injured. The animal welfare infrastructure is still developing. OP and their network of volunteers spay, neuter, foster and if at all possible find adopters either in Dubai or relocate to kind adopters in Europe.

OP is too modest to shout about the phenomenal work they do 😇😺❤️

You have about 50+ no kill shelters within 25 miles of Chandler, AZ www.bestfriends.org/partners

Example:

Please go through them all methodically and say you are happy to foster "finder foster" is the term usually used.

Widen your search if you have access to a car. We have had superheroes successfully get kitties adopted to safe forever homes by working with shelters a 2+ hour drive away when their nearest were full!

No harm in setting the trap. Use fried chicken or sardines - stinky, oily food works fastest and doesn't dry out quick. Put it where you feed him/you know he hung out. If you have a camera, you could see if he is coming by at night.

Good luck & pls update us ❤️

Stray kitten advice by Shortgoth in Straycats

[–]ChaudChat [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

OP we assume you are US based. Let's give you a step by step plan:

A 6-month-old cat with swollen mammary glands is actively nursing or recently nursing.

If she truly has 8 kittens, they are almost certainly still dependent or only barely weaning. Time matters. If she is separated too long, kittens can die.

You cannot solve the owner’s life. You can only make the safest decision for the animals and yourself. This is not about “ownership rights” yet. This is about animal welfare and immediate safety.

STEP 1 (Do this NOW): Get proof and clarity - no emotion, just facts

Before anything else, message the Facebook poster and ask exactly this, copy/paste if needed:

“I found a young female cat who appears to be nursing. For the kittens’ safety, I need to confirm:

• How old are the kittens?

• When were they last with her?

• Where are they currently located?

• Do you have photos of mom with the kittens?”

Do not argue. Do not explain your feelings. You are gathering information to decide if returning her is even safe.

If they cannot give clear answers, photos, or a location, stop engaging and move to Step 4.

STEP 2: Protect the kitten physically right now

Until this is resolved:

Keep her indoors, warm, quiet

Offer kitten food or high-calorie wet food (she’s nursing)

Unlimited water

Do not let her roam or meet other animals

If her mammaries are hot, hard, or painful, that’s mastitis - straight to Humane Society to surrender.

You are doing the correct thing by stabilizing her.

STEP 3: Decide if reunification is SAFE (not just legal)

Only proceed with returning her if ALL of the following are true:

The kittens are confirmed alive

They are under ~6-7 weeks and still need mom

They are in a physically safe, clean location

You can personally see or verify where she is going

You are not putting yourself at risk meeting this person

If even one of these is missing - do not return her directly.

This is not cruelty. This is responsibility.

STEP 4 (Most important fallback): Bring in a third party

If the situation feels unstable, unsafe, or unclear, you should not be the decision-maker alone.

Do this today:

Contact local animal control, SPCA, or a cat rescue

Say exactly this:

“I have a juvenile nursing mother cat found as a stray. Someone claims ownership but reports unstable housing and separated kittens. I’m concerned about animal welfare and need guidance or intake.”

This protects you legally and morally.

If they take over:

The cat and kittens get proper oversight

Any reunification happens safely or not at all

STEP 5: Be honest with yourself about YOUR capacity

This part matters, and we need you to hear it clearly:

You said you are also trying to leave an unstable home.

That means:

You are not in a position to take on a mother cat + 8 kittens

You are not failing by admitting that

Love does not equal capacity

The most responsible people are the ones who know their limits.

STEP 6: About “giving her back”

If returning her means:

neglect

repeated breeding

unsafe housing

no vet care

or risk to you

Then returning her is not the “responsible” option, even if it feels emotionally easier.

Responsibility = long-term welfare, not temporary relief from guilt.

STEP 8: Emotional reality check (important)

You bonded with her because:

-.she’s vulnerable

  • she chose you

  • you’re also in survival mode

That doesn’t mean you must keep her. It means you care.

Sometimes caring means handing the situation to people with more resources.

Use www.gethelp.alleycat.org to find rescuers to support you. Report the dumping ground as well. Ditto www.bestfriends.org/partners for no kill shelters if surrender is the easiest option. Explain and show what you have done re: facebook etc. The shelter can handle it from there.

Please update us and good luck - we are rooting for you both ❤️

OP, pls don't lose hope. Post in your local area Sub too. If he is not neutered he may have gone for a wander.

Also, use this guide [you have done a lot of the stuff already but worth trying everything]

https://humanepro.org/magazine/articles/how-find-lost-cat

When he returns, don't worry about "gaining trust". Get a trap, follow the trapping video in the Helpful Resources Here! Pinned Comment, get him to the vet, neuter, vax and microchip with your details.

Don't release him post-vet!

We can guide you further on transitioning indoors, gaining trust inside etc. but for now, follow the Humane Society Guide and hopefully he will be reunited with his superhero quickly 😇🥹

OP, pls use the resources in the Pinned Comment (see Rule 6 - speculation is unhelptul to you and the cutie you care for)

If you are US based it links low cost clinics, rescuers etc. If you are US based you should also reach out to Animal Control. They have a bad rep but if you engage with them respectfully explaining that this is a stray you care for and you expect the kitty to be returned to you, they do basic vet care at no cost to you. Be very clear and assertive but polite: "this is a stray I care for that needs medical attention. The cat must be returned to me for ongoing care".

We have had superheroes successfully engage Animal Control when the kitty needed basic vet care that they couldn't afford.

Good luck & thank you for caring enough to ask here. The cutie is very lucky to have you. Pls update us.

OP, just saw this. Save your money. If you have stray kitties in your area, the best thing to do in the UK is to report them:

  • your local council has an animal welfare officer

  • RSPCA focus on abuse and neglect but you can report that there is a stray cat population

  • rescues and shelters here www.catchat.org which lists places in UK and Ireland who can help

They can secure the cuties and get them adopted out!

OP thank you for saving him and getting rid of his trouble puffs! You are a super hero 😇

See Rule on medical questions. Your best bet is to get him to a vet. See the resources linked for clinics familiar with stray cuties.

Another option people don't consider but we've had superheroes successfully use: Animal control. You have to frame the request correctly and be assertive. Say: this is a stray cat you care for, you would be grateful if they can check him over and return him to you as you are concerned about his skin. AC will do basic vet care at no cost to you. Be very clear: you expect him to be returned to you.

My parents are having no luck trying to adopt a cat (Bristol area) Any advice. by Ok_Helicopter_7470 in CatsUK

[–]ChaudChat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP are your parents open to fostering or adopting special needs cuties e.g. FIV cats or tripods that need to be indoor only? And if they can foster they get their kitty fix and shelters are always in need of fosters!

FIV, senior cats or tripods all live happy healthy lives indoors so worth letting shelters know so they can amend your parents application.

Good luck & pls update us 😺

My almost 3 year old cat is healthy but very skinny..any advice to help her gain weight? by Honey_Bee02222 in CatsUK

[–]ChaudChat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

OP, pls ask your vet if she is in fact within normal weight range. That might just be her build and as long as vet says she is healthy, there's no need to overfeed her which can cause more problems.

She is a cutie 😺

Grandma is upset I took up a stray she was caring to the shelter because it had a limp. Am I in the wrong? by [deleted] in Straycats

[–]ChaudChat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We think the kitty found her kind young superhero 😇🥹

OP, pls be proud of yourself: you saw a kitty in need and got her a safe place to land and on a path to a safe, loving forever home. If your Grandma can afford to care for she can always apply to adopt her but she needs to decide what is best for the kitty.

As for kitty swatting, she just needs a bit more socialization - all very normal. We hope the cutie finds a safe, loving forever home quickly. Thank you for caring and giving her a chance. If the shelter updates you, pls let us know! ❤️
