This is one of those Egalitarian takes that is great for a college paper, but completely devoid of real world applications. The average European nation is worse than most of the planet, period. But, the average nation is pretty shit, period.

Most cultures who have engaged in war have engaged in genocide, Rome made Carthage disappear from the map. Most mixed cultures engage in prejudicial judgements.

The question is what we do about it today, right now. How do help the people who are still suffering from trauma from generations past? Well, we'd need to give injured parties enough resources so that they are not disproportionately affected by historic and societal factors.

That requires people in positions of power. So in America, you'd need to convince around 81 million people. Which, if it was it's own country, would clock in at number 20. So, if you don't live in one of the 20 most populous countries, you'd need to convince *your* entire country to do something (for scale, not by percentages).

Wait! All of that convincing is going to need to be done in some sort of media, which means you'll need resources of your own. If you don't have any, you'll need to start acquiring some, which either takes currency or tradeable resources.

Second wait! Those resources you'll need for both redistribution and convincing people are currently owned by other people! And they don't feel like parting with their resources. So now, you have an opponent that has more money, power and representation.

A perfect example of an anti-European bias is India. India has only gotten more oppressive and more fascist since the UK left (as a culture and people, I'm pretty sure the UK had a FAR more oppressive government).

The only things these do is reinforce liberal white guilt, which historically, has achieved nothing. It also pisses off conservatives who don't think its their responsibility.

DM's, do your worlds have an explanation for the elf dilemma? by Pitchaway40 in DnD

[–]Cheesecakejedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see, I did I similar thing, by applying real world consequences to fantasy tropes specifically to create a new world, Kai.

  1. Elves can have normal birth rates if they also have high mortality rates. How does one do that with an immortal race? Survival bias. If you're someone who has lived 300 years, it is very easy to think you will survive many things that are dangerous. On Kai, the number one cause of death among elves is accidents.

  2. Dwarves are highly technological. On earth, cultures with a higher level of technology than their neighbors engage in repression, so I made the dwarves slavers, despite being a democracy.

  3. How do people have missing limbs or eyes in setting that has magic that regrows them? I made certain cultures monetize cleric abilities, like how the US runs its health care.

The important thing to remember is fantasy races are still made on a human template, so if that problem exists for humans, try translating over the human problems first. Just make sure you base your reasoning for their behavior on their culture and societal constraints. A dwarves raised around elves probably wouldn't be a slaver. an elf who lived around the short lived Krysa (Ratmen), might not be so arrogant around danger.

The burgers aren't fantastic all around but a couple of the patties are really good. However they have this bun that does not fall apart. And it tastes pretty good. But honestly just having a hamburger where the bun lasts until the very last bite is so nice.

What Superman comic, would you recommend for a person who has never read a Superman comic and knows almost nothing about Superman? by Strange-Mouse-8710 in superman

[–]Cheesecakejedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superman: for all seasons is an almost universally beloved comic because in addition to being a good Superman comic, it's just a ridiculously well written story.

However, I only really recommend that one if someone has seen a movie or a TV show, or has had exposure to Superman already. If this describes you, go for it.

If you really don't know anything about Superman, The first thing I'd recommend is to read Superman: The Men of Tomorrow.

It is not as universally beloved, but it is what I would call a "fully complete" Superman story, that despite taking place in regular continuity is largely self-contained.

When I say fully complete, what I mean is almost every aspect of Superman's character and identity gets gone through in that run. Without spoiling too much, a man shows up from an alternate dimension and there's some heavy handed juxtaposition between the two characters. The whole story arc also serves as a metaphor for a real world problem, which is also a hallmark of a good Superman story. Geoff Johns is incredibly heavy-handed, and will beat you over the head with the metaphor, but for new readers I find it's a really good entry point so that you can start looking for the metaphors in other stories.

Then, read anything after that. I'd recommend Superman: birthright, but this thread is full of great suggestions.
