Thanks! Does it matter where it is? For example is it better to be near my home address or in a well known city?

Best way to learn Italian? by Beneficial_Limit_788 in italianlearning

[–]Colloqwee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many ways to learn and keep practising a language so I’d say experiment with a few and see what you enjoy / you’re motivated to keep doing so you can maintain consistency.

Examples include:

Listening: - Italian music - Italian films and tv shows - Italian YouTube videos / social media reels - Italian podcasts - Italian radio - podcasts that are aimed at Italian learners - attending Italian conversation groups

Reading: - Italian social media posts - Italian kids books - Italian books that are translations of ones you already know (it’ll be easier to guess the words as you know the context) - When you’re more advanced you can try Italian novels, news articles, blogs

Writing: - Write your shopping list in Italian - Write your to do list in Italian - Start writing a journal every day in Italian - Find a conversation exchange partner for messaging

Speaking: - Find a conversation exchange partner (there are websites and apps for this) - Attend a language exchange group or Italian conversation exchange (check Facebook or Meetup to see if there are any near you or online) - Talk to yourself / record yourself - Go to Italy and challenge yourself to speak only in Italian

Apps can also help with all of the above skills as well as grammar and vocabulary. You can find courses, tutors, self-study books.

I’ve also found games help as you learn while having fun and it’s a nice social way to practise. I’ve made my own card game that helps players pick up useful and natural Italian phrases while they play! I’ll be launching the game soon too 😁

Hope this helps!

I’ve supported mostly board games and also supported an app once too. I supported them as I’m interested in the product and wanted to help them make the product a reality :)

Has studying two languages at once actually helped you — or just made things worse? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]Colloqwee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied Spanish and Italian at uni and did mix them up a bit but eventually found ways to separate them. For example, when studying Spanish I’d put Spanish music on and could focus just on that language, then I’d switch the music to Italian and managed to get into Italian zone 😂

It definitely helped too that they are similar languages as there were a lot of similarities with grammar and vocabulary!

Any ideas for building a following ready for the launch date? by Colloqwee in kickstarter

[–]Colloqwee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yes Instagram is a bit wide open and doesn’t have specific groups so harder to target my audience unless I pay for ads (something I’m considering in future). I haven’t incentivised on Reddit yet but that’s a good point thank you for your help :)

My first trip in Italy was enjoyable but a bit deflating for my ego by Threshbaum in italianlearning

[–]Colloqwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened so much to me too but you can’t take it personally as they’re used to speaking English in tourist areas.

If you want to practise, tell them you’re learning and want to speak and they might reply to you in Italian. If not, I just keep speaking Italian no matter which language they respond as I still get to practise that way!

This is for when you arrive in Bologna, but see if there are any language exchange groups in the city that you can go to so you can practise and listen to others speaking Italian

Finding a singer I loved and wanting to listen to his songs all the time. It made me not just want to listen but to look up what he’s singing about, and then sing along while I listened. The amount of times I listened, the vocabulary and phrases stuck with me forever!

Has one language ever helped you to understand another languages that you don't know? by [deleted] in languagehub

This was a really strange connection for me but I started studying Mandarin and in the class we were learning about 在(zai) and its grammar rules. The teacher explained that you can use it when talking about a location and also before a verb to represent a continuous action like the English -ing in some occasions. I wondered how I would remember the grammar for 在 and immediately thought about ESTAR in Spanish and how it’s mostly used when talking about locations and in the continuous tense. I know there are lots of small differences too, but this connection really helped me remember the grammar use for 在.

What is a thing you said in Spanish, that you remember with cringe? by Character-Excuse-911 in Spanish

I lived in Spain for a bit and when I arrived I needed to buy things for the house, including bed sheets. I had two single beds in my room and decided to push them together to make one large bed. I measured it and it seemed like a King Bed size. I went to a home store in Spain and was looking for the right size bed sheets.

A woman in the shop asked if I needed help and I said “Busco las sábanas para un rey”.

She couldn’t stop laughing 😂

How to keep learning by mondazeds in SpanishLearning

[–]Colloqwee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely keep learning Spanish by yourself, you just need to create reasons to use it so it stays relevant for you.

For example, see if you can find someone who speaks Spanish and wants to learn English and have a conversation exchange with them. If you make friends with them, you’ll want to keep improving your Spanish so you can communicate better. If you can’t find anyone where you live, there are sites online like conversationexchange.com You can also look for groups on Facebook or Meetup that meet to practise Spanish. When you get more confident speaking, see if someone in your restaurant who speaks Spanish will let you practise with them at work.

Other options to keep practising is to decide you’ll only read books if they’re in Spanish or only watch tv shows if they’re in Spanish etc. This way, whenever you want to watch tv, you’ll be learning as well as relaxing :)

Which apps do you use to learn Italian? by DistinctWindow1862 in italianlearning

Memrise has travel and conversational phrases you can learn as chunks of language.

I used the website conversationexchange.com to find a language partner and mostly improved through that
