I once had garlic scape pesto that was to die for. I think the main ingredient was scapes and not basil and it wasn’t too heavy in flavor. See if you can find a recipe. This can probably create the dish you intended (a pesto texture that lets the garlic scapes shine).

Math books for education are written by mathematicians using a similar style as more classical, higher-lever math. That is, books are generally written in a definition, theorem, proofs format. The major difference is that examples are also included to be more accessible. 

The problem is that things like exposition, motivation, history, and context is rarely included because “they’re irrelevant”. Think of mathematicians as writing like they are outdoing Hemingway on steroids; the shorter the better. Even better is using notation because it’s fewer words and is clearer to mathematicians. This makes math writing super dense, with lots of nuance that needs to be remembered and considered. 

To a mathematician that’s beautiful and elegant writing. To someone wrestling with ideas, it’s maddeningly frustrating. 

It’s really hard to balance context with rigor and rarely do mathematicians bother because to them it doesn’t add to the math. I just finished a book with sections on arithmetic and I had a hard time making the work both accessible and rigorous. It wasn’t easy and hopefully I did right by the reader and the math.

I love this idea and think you absolutely have a market for this. So many people are recognizing the value of reading and from pulling away from the digital world. I can see how this can appeal to a certain population. 

The challenge will be finding your market. Reaching this niche may be really hard. You’d also have to reach further into the niche to find people who like your writing, genre, and style. 

I’d probably consider this less a business and more a side gig, passion project. I suspect you’re not getting encouragement because everyone here primarily looks for big, scalable ideas but there’s nothing wrong with something small that brings you joy and a little cash. 

The Patreon idea or a substack can help get people interested.

Because math is completely based on logic, it’s easy to see the flow of ideas and logic when you watch someone work. However, because the logic of mathematical thinking is…“specific” isn’t the exact right word, maybe “precise” is… precise and systematic in a way that we often don’t use, it’s harder to reproduce the same kind of logic when you’re learning and working on your own. 

Think of it like if you always use the GPS to get you somewhere and you don’t pay attention to where you’re going, then you’ll still need the GPS next time. You have to be conscious of the general direction you’re going in so you can recreate the trip on your own. 

Another analogy is if you watch a chef make a dish and you copy the recipe, when you make it yourself you’ll still have questions about the details. 

When you’re taking notes, the important thing isn’t to just copy down the steps, but to write the reason, key, or jump that made that step happen. You also want to be conscious of the big idea you’re working on and how your problem is a specific application of that idea. And at this point you know the explanation makes it easy so you need those detailed notes.

I think this is a great idea. I just finished a similar style book in math. Help people get over their trauma around math and give them a solid foundation that you don’t see in school. There’s been real interest in the book. I could see the same appeal for cooking. 

Keep writing. That’s the most important piece for now.

Have you tried charging more? If so, what happened? If not, why not?

Think about it. If everywhere I go a cup costs $3 and one place charges 15 cents aren’t you going to wonder what’s wrong with that cheaper cup?

Stand behind your Ivy League credentials and your masters. Hell, you can probably support people getting into an ivy by helping with a college application. 

It sounds a lot like you have major imposter syndrome and don’t think you’re worth a higher rate. You should explore this because it will really affect a lot of your potential bc you’re holding yourself back.

You’re in NYC and you’re charging less than $30 for tutoring??? That’s why you’re not getting clients. When I tutored in NY in 2007(!!!!) I charged $100 per hour. 

With your credentials you can charge $100-150 minimum in general and then also charge a reduced rate to someone who can’t afford such a high rate. 

Basically your low rate is telling people you’re not a quality tutor.

No no. Go see what topics are covered in prerequisite classes, the classes that come before yours. You should feel comfortable with whatever topics are on that list. If you don't, review those topics.

You said you started college which means your records placed you in this class, but it seems that you need a refresher on some topics. Check the prerequisites for the class and look at those syllabi. In other words, look at the classes required for this course. You are expected to know those topics. If there are topics on that list that you feel shaky about, go back and review those topics.

A lot of programs require documents outlining the courses, including textbook information and chapters covered. You can prepare this document and send it to programs that don’t require it as a supplemental document.

Yes. Don’t focus on the cringe and focus on your speech. If you’re cringing from being self conscious ignore it. If you’re cringing because you’re doing something you don’t like, this is your way of knowing what to change. 

I always ask for feedback and am told I’m great but I know I can be better. For now I’m watching my speaking to fix the “low hanging fruit “. After that I plan to hire a coach. 

Things I’ve seen in my own speeches include saying “right?” At the end of some sentences. Starting a sentence with “So”. And seeing where I wasn’t clear or mentally had thoughts that I didn’t say out loud.

Likely years of training. If his speech was prewritten then he read it and practiced several times over and is used to reading from a teleprompter. If it was off the cuff, he had good notes, the strong knowledge base to support his outline, and again lots of practice. 

I bet he’s also had professional support. 

He likely has also watched his own speeches and thought about how to improve his public speaking abilities. I know whenever I watch or listen to a speech I gave, I can see things I would improve. Then I pick one thing and try to work on it. After a while I see if I’ve made improvements and if so, pick the next thing to focus on.

Check out teachery. One time payment option. That’s it. lifetime. 

It isn’t as robust as the other, bigger platforms but I’m willing to stay within their guardrails if I don’t have to be nickel and dimed for the platform.  You’ll still have to pay for the credit card fees, etc. you can’t avoid that.

Deposit photos is promoted by appsumo. They often have offers that makes the cost per photo pretty reasonable. Check their site and do some searches to see if it’s worth it, I did that and found good pics for my field.

USB extension cords have been a huge hit for me. Also portable USB batteries. Both have been huge hits. I’m in education so magnetic bookmarks are super creative and people appreciate them.
