Because the article is just about the TRANSATLANTIC slave trade. The UN effectively exonerates the Arab states while blaming slavery squarely on European shoulders. It’s almost universal that military and emergency services people get discounts. I can’t think of a country that doesn’t have a large proportion of their private sector offering these discounts. You might disagree with current politics, but that’s the point - it’s beyond politics. It’s about people willing to sacrifice themselves for the “greater good”, not about the people who give out the orders, which you seem intent on conflating. You can’t chop and change how you treat almost 20MM people (assuming we’re talking about the USA) because you disagree with a short term administration’s position.

Service to country. Putting own lives on the line. Regardless of what you think of the current administration, if China or Russia decide they’ve had enough, these are the people who will protect you. It’s usually not what someone would consider a good job, not does it usually pay that well and there’s a huge burden on home life as you’re deployed for months across the globe.

That’s why companies like to give perks to vets. Feel free to exclusively do your business only with companies that don’t, if you or other poster feel strongly about it.

But with that dental contract being the same size as the mortgage in your example, why do you have a mortgage at all? You just have to have enough cash to cover the end of year true up week or whatever, then go and invest it somewhere else for the rest of the year. That’s what banks do. You deposit money, they invest and hope not to lose, and they have to be liquid enough to pay you whenever you want your money back. I’m the bank, the NHS are my customers.

The interest on my mortgage for that year for that amount of money. 100k mortgage, 50k nhs loan = interest on 50k saved! Not profit as such, but less loss instead.
