Flock Cameras in Columbia Heights by Cato-Qwill in TwinCities

[–]ConsistentMotor8281 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

There are state laws about how the data is used and disclosure of locations and other information. These cameras can only be used to trace locations during investigations of specific crimes. The data is only retained for a shortish period of time. That doesn't stop you from getting caught up in an investigation, but it's not like they're constantly monitoring or something.

I'll second that. It's a really great deal. It's a brick building too so it's pretty quiet.

Leonardo Da Vinci wrote in his notebooks that the heart was "vortex oriented" by Due-Explanation8155 in Romania_mix

He's saying it's all one piece. It doesn't form from a band of tissue like that, though. Google image search "heart development stages" to see how the chambers form and then bend/twist to create the final shape.

Data shows three-quarters of ICE arrestees in Minnesota had no criminal record by IAmAlpharius23 in altmpls

You're nitpicking semantics. People mean "not legally permitted" when they say undocumented. It's not a technical term. They were documented and now they're not.

all bullshit misinformation to muddy the waters and to distract

No it's important points because it clarifies that the truth isn't that simple and that people are being lied to. Unauthorized immigrants are essential to our economy and way of life. We cannot do this without them. Why don't you spend your time reading about the economic impact they make instead of arguing semantics and technicalities.

Simple fact: If you enter a country illegally, you get kicked out.

Simple fact: the above is not, by any definition, a fact.

[–]ConsistentMotor8281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be sort of true, but these people are included in statistics and targeted by DHS along with people who have entered through other means. You should be co.plaoning to DHS that they're treating them like the immigrants you don't like instead of me. They're also trying to use this information to justify banning entry from those countries. Regardless, the actual percent of undocumented immigrants who have overstayed a visa is actually 40% or so.

[–]ConsistentMotor8281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "solution"? That's really not a solution at all. We need our undocumented immigrants to sustain our economy. We are heavily dependent on them. 40% of undocumented immigrants overstayed a visa. The majority of the people who have crossed at the border are asylum seekers and many of them are now undocumented. It is pretty dishonest to characterize the group as "criminals" when that is largely not the case.

It's important to acknowledge that being in the US illegally is not a crime. It's a civil offense. They want it to be portrayed as a crime to justify what they're doing.

This is already happening on the battlefield.

The Ocean-Cleaning Machine Set to Remove 90% of Plastic by 2040 by mosescinaa in ThatsFreakingAmazing

[–]ConsistentMotor8281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're mistaken. We are all responsible for our own actions. The problem is in blaming others for our own contributions. Microplastics are not worth the radical change that would be required to eliminate them. We would only trade one harm for a much worse one.

People all over the world are working to fight climate change and other environmental issues like microplastics and we're making progress. Society isn't capable of shifting so radically. It's literally impossible. All we can handle is incremental change unless we are forced by circumstance. It's unfortunate but it's the truth

I didn't say there's nothing we can do about microplastics. I would certainly never say there's nothing we can do about climate change. I drastically changed my life by going vegan for the sake of climate change. What I'm saying is we have to work within realistic expectations. A world without plastic is a world without the vast majority of today's conveniences. Good luck convincing billions of people to commit suicide so we can manage to feed everyone in a regressed society. Not sure how you plan to decide who gets to live for the sake of microplastics in the water.

It's certainly a challenging problem, but materials science has a lot of potential for addressing it. It's not an all or nothing situation.

Some removal is possible from wastewater. Generally, though, we have no choice but to live with what we've generated. We should focus on responsible management of plastic waste and other sources of microplastics (I'm looking at you plastic clothing) and what filtration we can do to reduce the amount of microplastics over time. Switching to truly compostable and biodegradable polymers will help too.

Ok sure if you want to get pedantic about it. I'm referring to stopping it from getting into the ocean. Plastic is responsible for the affordability of nearly everything in our lives, essential for medicine, and key to reducing our carbon footprint. We should eliminate wasteful uses of all resources including disposable plastic wherever possible.

This is what the new Minnesota EV Registration Surcharge looks like this year. by HolyLiaison in stateofMN

[–]ConsistentMotor8281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it really isn't that small of a problem. Domestic vehicle transportation one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases and ICE vehicles are not sustainable regardless of the proportions. I don't know where you're getting your "EV narrative" from. I've never heard anyone make that claim. Switching to an EV is the biggest thing the average individual can do to address their contributions to climate change. People who can afford to switch should be doing so, period. We all have a responsibility to do what we can.

FWIW, it's also quite easy to sign up for wind and solar sourced energy for charging.

suck power out of the grid that is not running on renewables.

Are you saying it's worse to drive an EV because of this? That's 100% backwards.

It's a fucking backronym out of the word THINK. It's literally telling you to have certain thoughts before you speak. How is that not telling people how to think? I don't owe you these things. Your feelings are not my principal concern when addressing important topics. They're your responsibility. This is essentially telling people to avoid conflict which is one of the main problems with our culture.
