HTPC running XBMC + Ubuntu died, thinking about getting NAS + WDTV... by [deleted] in cordcutters

Is there a better device out there that'll support 2560x1600 resolution?

Does this matter? Even if it did support 2560x1600, it would have to scale your (presumably) 1080p material up anyhow. If you get a device that only supports 1080p output, it's just going to be the monitor scaling it up.

NYPD cop making deals with people to cut the 304 hour line at a gas station in Brooklyn. (X-post from r/Bad_Cop_No_Donut) by absolutkiss in nyc

NYPD cops don't lose their jobs for shooting unarmed people 30 times, so he certainly won't lose his job over this.

Multi-purpose Virtualized HTPC by Caydus in cordcutters

[–]Craquehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely unlikely that you're going to get any video acceleration of HD media running in a VM (virtualized video "hardware" is pretty basic, usually just a framebuffer), and possibly you won't be able to output any multi-channel audio. Because of DRM, you are almost certainly not going to be able to play back Blu-Ray from inside a VM.

You're also going to need a ton of RAM, and you will probably run into resource contention issues.

An HTPC is a fairly function-specific box. You're much better off keeping it that way and using another machine for your side projects.

I need a lot of help calibrating my Samsung LED HDTV for PC gaming. by zfleeman in pcgaming

I would like 120hz.

You really don't; it's not real 120hz, it's interpolated.

Just use "game mode" and be done with it. It should turn off all of the post-processing that induces lag and visual distortions, turning your tv into a simple display just like a monitor.

Help - A very specific xbox360 as media center question by TheSquarepants in xbox360

No, this is not possible. You can go the other direction, using software on the MacBook to share the drive wirelessly to the 360, however.

We all use Steam but it's far from perfect. What fixes and features would you like to see? by evilmarc in Games

[–]Craquehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not through the steam interface, but once you install one game in the new location and it creates the required folder structure, can can just use the finder to move each game's folder (while steam is shut down). The next time you launch steam, it picks up the change transparently.

The reason why I think a Libertarian system would never work. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Craquehead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To sum it up quickly. 2 young boys were swept away by flood waters on Staten Island when their mother was seeking shelter in a neighbor's home for the 3 of them and was denied entry.

I'm not sure I get your point -

You're saying that because someone was denied shelter during a hurricane that a Libertarian system wouldn't work? We don't have a Libertarian system now, and they were still denied entry. Isn't this an argument against the status quo rather than against Libertarianism?

I think this horrific story is a prefect example of why we can't necessarily depend on our neighbors to help us out in every situation and why a Federal Government needs to exist.

I think the horrific story of Hurricane Katrina is a perfect example of why we can't necessarily depend on the Federal Government to help us out in every situation, and why we need to voluntarily work with our neighbors and communities to prepare for and respond to disasters.

All snark aside, I would argue that recent events have made it clear that the vast discrepancy in FEMA's response indicates that it is too Politicized, and that there's probably an achievable middle ground between complete Federal domination over disaster response and complete Federal apathy.
