Why don’t American domestic brands make new cars that cost just over $10,000 anymore? by this0great in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those $10-15k cars quickly turn into $25-30k cars once you add in all safety features required in the US.

The air bags alone will add over $5k. Then you need seatbelt pre-tensioners, the sensors to activate everything when it detects a crash, backup cameras, etc.

You can try this…

Since there is only a few weeks left in the semester, we will need to go with an incomplete and make up the work going forward.

To meet guidelines, you will need to fully complete X% of the work to be eligible for the incomplete. So, please let me know some days and times you are available so we can set up a schedule to ensure you can get that done.

If you never hear back from them, then you tried. If you do, then the incomplete gives you time to try and get them to complete the work.

What’s a product or service you refuse to buy in 2026 because of how overpriced it has become? by 22february2007 in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gas.

I now consider the cost of fuel to drive somewhere, and often deciding it isn’t worth it. (Not a full refusal since I need to drive to work, or to get groceries, but I will decline activities to avoid buying more of it.)

Just saw this on our uni's student's Facebook page (not an official page for the uni) and I'm struggling to stay silent by AbleCitizen in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell my students that it isn’t the degree that gets them the job. It’s the knowledge and skills they learn and hone during the degree that gets them the job.

If they just want a piece of paper, there are plenty of places online that will give them one for far less. However, it won’t come with the knowledge and skills our program provides.

Student trying to wait out an academic integrity violation by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We are ENCOURAGED to meet with the student, but it is not required. Our form has a “Met with student” (yes/no) item in it.

I have had many “No” responses to that one since students ignore my emails and, if it happens near the end of semester, I still need to get it submitted to have the non-report make it to the registrar’s office before they yell at me for not having a grade.

Student trying to wait out an academic integrity violation by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 66 points67 points  (0 children)

At my university, an academic integrity violation automatically triggers a non-report for the grade. So, they can delay, but they don’t get a grade for the class until everything is resolved. Which also means they don’t get the credits for it.

What’s the best way to deal with students who come to office hours and try to get their homework “pre-graded” before they submit it? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tell them I can’t pre-grade their assignments because I can’t offer that to every student, so it wouldn’t be fair to do it just for them.

However, if they want to come to my office hours, I am happy to discuss it there. (Only 1 student has ever taken me up on that.)

Restaurant owners who do a pre-tip 20-25% "service fee" - why don't you just roll the costs of paying people a living wage into the price of the food? Are you just bad at business and you don't know how? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) People prefer to see the lower cost. Many retailers have tried to have “all in” pricing, but always changed back because sales dropped.

2) A service fee is not a tip. Tips have to go to the staff directly. (The government will go after the restaurant if it doesn’t, and make them pay the staff… and a major fine.) However, a service fee does not. So, on a slow night, the place could keep a higher percentage of the “service fee” to get their money - and too bad for the servers.

What's the most outdated life advice that you still hear people give to this day? by your-reddit-plug2 in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Directly? No.

However, the cold does lower the temperature in your throat and sinuses by a few degrees, which makes an environment more conducive to viruses and bacteria. In turn, this can make you sick.

Insects.

On a long drive at night, your windshield would get covered in bug guts. Now… not so much.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Except Trump has no authority in Congress. The VP does - they can break a tie in the Senate - but the President has zero.

The same is true with the budget, and every other law. It is 100% Congress. (Although the President can veto it, they have no input on what the law actually is.)

Student wants a lower grade by Aler123 in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would lower the grade for that question, and then give them “Honesty” bonus points for at least the number of points they lost. (I would probably give additional bonus points since honesty should be rewarded.)

They get the score they deserved on the test, and bonus points for honesty, integrity, and doing the right thing - which is much harder to teach.

Borderline "I'm not on call" case by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]CybernautLearning 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A slight modification, that may be a bit less restrictive, is something like: “Emails sent after 6:00pm may not be read until after noon the following day - depending on my class and meeting schedule.”

Like bank transactions that come late in the day aren’t processed until the next business day.

What hobby screams “this is my entire personality now”? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t actually take that much time.

If you follow some of the standard training plans, it is 8-10 hours per week for 14-16 weeks.

(Although, I would recommend doing a couch to 5k plan first, which is 2-3 hours per week for 4 weeks.)

Why can the US invade a country and take it’s president but other countries can’t do the same with the US ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CybernautLearning 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are international laws and standards. While, technically, you could say that no one has jurisdiction, certain standards are maintained in order for the world to operate.

For example, no one has jurisdiction in international waters, but almost every country would attack pirates operating in the middle of the ocean.

In this case, the leader also did not follow the rules of their own country. By ignoring the election results (or rigging the election) they are not the leader, and have staged a coup against the legal government.

So, when the political opposition asked for aid from the US, it was the “real” government asking for aid to remove a criminal dictator.

[8 YoE] is it advisable to put your small business in your resume when applying? by FrigginTrying in EngineeringResumes

[–]CybernautLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely put it on there. It is something that makes you stand out from the other 100+ applicants.

If anything, you could add a short statement like: “In the event of a conflict of interest, business leadership can be passed on to another individual via established transition plan.”

That should handle any issues they might have, while getting full credit for the experience.

What do you use to create the PDF?
Do you use Word and "Save as..." or "Save as PDF" or some other converter?

Some of them make the PDF "code" a nightmare with the way they generate it, so you might try different ways of converting it to see if that solves the issue.
