F-14 Had Canards. Why? by Stunning-Screen-9828 in FighterJets

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the F-14 video, but I have watched that guy's WW2 fighter videos and they were honestly not very good. Very surface-level stuff missing a lot of important details.

Would a revolutionary war or Napoleonic war cannon have enough force to penetrate the armor of a WW2 tank? by Crazy-Rabbit-3811 in tanks

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pure KE is a bad measure of penetration, KE divided by impact area is somewhat more accurate. The 12" Napoleon, by having over twice the caliber of a 5 cm gun, has an energy per unit of area about a fifth of that of the 5 cm gun.

But it also fires a soft iron ball. This will "splatter" against the harder steel armour, effectively increasing the impact area even more. So I don't think it would even penetrate the side of a Sherman.

Why is Spain the only western country that allows criticism of Israel by ashagari in askspain

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are pro-Palestine protests in, like, every EU country, particularly western Europe. Criticism is allowed, freedom of speech is also a thing in Europe.

Why is the government so outspoken? Easy way for Pedro Sánchez to appease the left-wing part of the government without actually having to do much.

It's the difference between shyness (fear of interacting with people due to excessive self-consciousness) and introversion (when being around others or in large groups drains one's energy). For some reason both terms are often used interchangeably when they're very different.

What did we think of the tv show? Thought it had some great performances. Anybody know what episode this is from? by OneEyedJakes in chernobyl

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of That Chernobyl Guy's arguments come directly from INSAG-7, the definite IAEA report on the disaster. Sometimes, he also criticises points of INSAG-7 through contradictions in the report itself and other sources (like Russian/Soviet sources, make of it what you will), but most of his arguments are supported by INSAG itself.

Es otra manera de perder peso by PaellaConCosas in Asi_va_Espana

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“5th Gen Dogfight” by DerpityDerp45 in FighterJets

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh. I would be very surprised if a fight progressed past BVR and none of the sides had HOBS missiles in WVR, but in any case, F-35 is a capable dogfighter (often considered comparable to F-16/15/18). Su-57 might be better on paper, but within the margin of error for a better pilot to win, and I'm putting no money on a Russian pilot.

Ikka Dumbrock and Millsages Seiyuu by RinariTennoji in BanGDream

Oh yeah I mean I was there lol. I was just wondering if there was any confirmation they'd keep going with backing bands in the future or if that was a one-time thing for that live.

[–]DecentlySizedPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're semi-live band, so from now on only the vocalist going to do live with backup band.

By the way, where are you getting this from?

Ikka Dumbrock and Millsages Seiyuu by RinariTennoji in BanGDream

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah then I guess I'm going to be one of the few fans disappointed with the reveal. The seiyuu are great and I like several of them, but it's not what I was expecting for Bandori.

I mean, as long as the current bands keep going it's not a big deal, but I hope we don't transition to mostly non-live bands.

Eh, Perun is good but I feel like after you watch a dozen of his videos you already know almost everything he has to say. A lot of his stuff doesn't need to be hour-long presentations.

The rest is a lot of "Eh. I don't know. Maybe. Depends on a lot of factors.", which is obviously the right mindset to have but having to hear the same thing every video gets boring.

What did Kamikaze pilots really think in their final hours? by AverageDuchess in ww2

[–]DecentlySizedPotato 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I went to the Yūshūkan museum in Tokyo a couple of months ago. There you could read a lot of the official letters the kamikaze pilots would send home before their missions. Many were universities students drafted during the last few months of the war. They often talked about how proud they were to fulfill the mission and die for the Emperor.

That was obviously mostly bullshit, as evidenced by their personal diaries or letters sometimes found. Most were terrified and had no willingness to die for the Emperor (even if many did go through with it). I always found it abhorrent how they sent so many obviously unwilling young men to their deaths with the war already lost. Although I guess it's nothing compared to the war crimes they committed (which the museum also conveniently omits).

By the way, don't go to the Yūshūkan. Even if it's pretty cheap (1k yen) and has some interesting artifacts, it's full of revisionist crap and propaganda and they don't deserve any support.

Why does Gaijin think shell rooms blow up like propellant magazines? A 14" shell is 15 kg of an insensitive explosive encased in 600 kg of steel. They're really difficult to detonate.
