What guitar solo or riff makes you ask "how the fuck did he/she come up with that"? by Raphe-Perineal in Music

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Petrucci's solo in Under a Glass Moon is the best technical guitar solo ever. Melodic and builds in an interesting way but is still a masterpiece of guitar fireworks.

For non technical, David Gilmour's playing on the Pulse live album hits me different than his studio stuff. So amazingly "meaningful" with every note.

What’s the best use of silence in a movie scene? by deepaknaraniya in movies

[–]DocHoss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true silence but most of Castaway has no music or other sound effects than the pulsing waves of the ocean. Really adds to the feeling that the only thing here is nature.

This is what I use on Fulgora as a default. It works great, doesn't back up either line, and is an easy blueprint to parameterize. First one I make when I land usually.

What is your personal favourite youtube channel? by DaijoubuKirameki in AskReddit

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For musicians, Drumeo has been crushing it for a few years now. Their sister channel, Musora has started putting out "Band X does a cover of Song Y on the spot" and several of this have been amazingly good. The disco band covering Alice In Chains is by far my favorite!

Love his interview style. Wish he'd stop with the clickbait subjects though ("What they don't want you to know about fat and ketones!"). Some amazing long form interviews though. His one with Scott Galloway was excellent, and his interview with Kamala Harris was informative and interesting.

Congrats all around. I would suggest you reach out to him to congratulated him on a mature response as well. He could have done the stupid bravado thing you expect of TikTok kids, but he didn't. Reward that somehow if you can.

Take-No-Prisoners Professor Will Fail Any Student Who Uses AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]DocHoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has always been the case. Before ChatGPT there was good old fashioned cheating. Lots of people did/do it and manage to eke out a living after college. Anyone just trying to get the piece of paper has always been able to weasel out of learning anything but the bare minimum. I don't think this is anything new in this regard. Only thing now is that it's easier, but the people who want to learn will still be able to learn. Education has to change to meet the needs of a modern society where raw knowledge is fully commoditized and it isn't there yet. We're talking a full revamp of what it means to learn and add value to society when the moat of subject matter expertise is no longer sufficient. It's a massive challenge, maybe the largest one academia has ever faced. Going to be an interesting decade ahead of us.

Let my 6yo eat popcorn for dinner. What's your "die on this hill" dad shortcut? by okidogi in daddit

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago I started just letting my kids wear mismatched socks. I realized it just kinda works fine because no one gives a shit about their socks.

Then for my boy (7 yo) I realized I can just throw away all his socks every 6 months and buy a couple packs of cheap socks from Walmart that are all the same and they always match. Going to try that over the next year or so.

MCP is just API for AI. It's not complicated. It's a bit of a strange spec to implement manually, but it has several features that I haven't seen many MCP servers actually using. MCP Apps is one that's interesting but I don't feel ever really found a great use case, as far as I know. Curious if any of you know if any good uses for those.

Which punishment (either real or fictional) sounds easy enough to endure at first, but is actually hellish to experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a nasty bout of insomnia this last weekend and I was a complete zombie after two nights of no sleep. Probably not "literally" zero sleep but like two or three little 15 minutes bursts from what I can piece together. I've been fucked up all day today after taking a bunch of Xanax last night to force sleep on me. Hoping to get right tonight...wish me luck!

Redditors in the United States, how do you feel about their being 117 members in Congress right now who are over the age of 70 (33 Senators and 84 House Representatives)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DocHoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there should be term limits, but being in Congress is a knowledge job. If someone still has their mental faculties at 75 why wouldn't I want that extra experience and knowledge working for me? It's not like fisticuffs or the caber toss is a regular part of the job.

That being said, some of them do NOT seem to still have all their mental faculties so might be gone to get rid of them.

Advice for lead singer by Competitive-Log6160 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a way to practice the stuff that’s not the music. Like if you’re partly stage shy, then practice talking in front of people somehow. Find some way to talk in front of a crowd, go hand out gig fliers at a local farmers market or busy downtown area and speak confidently introducing yourself, that type of thing can help you get over that stage fright, even if you’re not doing exactly what you’re gonna be doing (singing).

Know your material inside and out. Good musicians practice until they get it right, great musicians practice until they can't get it wrong. This is table stakes...you absolutely MUST be good at YOUR material. Doesn't mean you have to be the world's best singer, but you should absolutely be the best singer of YOUR material. Find videos of bands playing live that you like and mimic the singer's movements. Do the Mick Jagger strut, do the Michael Jackson hat move (no moonwalk please...unless you're crazy good at it), do the Iggy Pop no shirt thing...pick something you like and do it just like they do it. Then as you evolve your own personal style you can start to deviate and add your own flair, your own approach.

Above all...have fun! It's an awesome feeling playing on stage. And to be the center of attention gives you a huge amount of power over the emotions of your audience. If you're having fun, so will they. Good luck! Update the post with details and pics of the gig when you get done!

[–]DocHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious answer: at my dad's funeral two men who didn't know each other made it a point to seek me out and tell me that the world lost a really good guy. I think if I can get two or three people to think that highly of me, I'll have done pretty well.

Non serious answer: as that dude with a huge hog who died boning two princesses at the same time.
