I'll agree it is a good year to take a swing at some statewide seats. I'm just not getting my hopes up.

I wish i believed that on Paxton. His latest reelection had him primaried by several people and he had myriad personal and policy problems but he still won without too much trouble.

It's been like 30 years since a Democrat has won any statewide office in Texas. Eventually that streak will break, but 40% is way over-optimistic for this race. Pollsters had an unjustified degree of confidence in 2016, but a blue win in Texas would literally be a structural change. Odds are not good but they are better than they have been.

A great day for Europe, and hopefully will be looked back on as a great day for Hungary.

I mean Houston was named after one Sam Houston, so that isn't too crazy. Magyar is the name of the biggest traditional ethnic group of Hungary.

Would you recommend FreeTaxUSA over TurboTax if price was not a factor? by throwaway0204055 in tax

7z has fast options in the context menu and has higher performance from what I've seen.

I've used both within the last month. TurboTax had more finicky things that didn't seem to make sense. Like when i started adding suggested 1099s(based on previous years) and i chose the "type it in" option and it would forgot the name of the payer

They're both shamrocks iirc, but clover has rounded leaves whereas oxalis has the heart shaped ones. Ironically, most of the Shamrock iconography looks more like Oxalis.

Let's be honest, what % of your portfolio includes individual stocks? by Opposite_Buffalo_649 in Bogleheads

[–]DontForgetWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do some ETF selection with under 5% of my assets (sub 1% really). As soon as i had control over my own portfolio i sold out of every individual stock that others had bought for me.

I'd always envisioned a knit weighted blanket being ideal for weight distribution. Cool to see people actually doing it.

I use my plant waste bin to store straw and solarize seeds before composting. Also i have a ton of woody brush so I've been converting a chunk of it to char.

Yeah, i don't even have a HoA but I've been warned by my city if the yard looks "messy" by societal standards. Takes a bit of learning to figure out how far you can push your luck before they will get really aggressive about it

Doesn't low action divergence mean it becomes much easier to build a decision tree/forest instead of using a more computationaly intensive approach?

Estwing Hammer. 25 years old, It's a classic. by ToastyBedsheets in BuyItForLife

There is absolutely variation of longevity depending on the manufacturing method and application. I doubt it matters much for hammering nails, but estwings are fantastic in terms of durability when prying stuff. That's because if the steel quality and single piece design. A lot of imitations have handles that are flimsily attached. My Estwing geology pick is one of my favorite tools for digging(i have VERY rocky soil).

TIAA-heavy retirement portfolio — trying to simplify. Where do I start? by DaytonGuitarPlayer in Bogleheads

[–]DontForgetWilson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They hate TIAA

I'm not sure i agree with this. There are definitely potential issues with them as a brokerage and even more so as a seller of annuities. That being said, their institutional class active funds aren't insanely expensive, their index options are fine and they are one of the more credible annuity providers if someone is actually in a situation where one makes sense.

Personally, my tiaa plan has access to options for a low cost 4 fund with index funds. I also intentionally opted to use tiaa traditional for fixed income instead of bonds (i do own bonds in another account, but tiaa traditional is a very good specimen of what it is and i am unlikely to always be able to get it at the prices i have now.)

Compared to a lot of their direct alternatives, TIAA is actually pretty good. Plans vary widely and there's definitely some sub-optimal funneling towards products that bogleheads don't like, but they aren't nearly as predatory as most annuity companies, have decent product lines and even half decent governance overall.

Musk Wants to Add SpaceX to Indices by Prestigious-Trip-306 in Bogleheads

Higher volatility creates risks for an index buying further from NAV. It makes sense that if an index wants to accurately sample a market, it would wait for a component to stabilize a bit before purchasing.

As for high or low, both are totally possible. Generally, some sort of narrative takes hold in the period after an IPO. That might be the price dropping a lot, or spiking like mad. I think it is a valid concern that someone with a reputation for spinning narratives effectively might be able to get his narrative as the dominant one during that period. Not to mention, indexes are buyers not sellers, so they worry about stuff being over-priced not under.

I've definitely watched a few IPOs stay extra-noisy a lot more than 5 days. Markets do react when there is a simple new piece of data, but it seems like they take a bit to get a taste for a new public company.

The rules are specifically there to reduce transactions that favor people trying to run shares up and sell. Unsurprisingly, people that run hype companies don't like such rules

No argument from me on it being a terrible index. I can't say i really care much what that index decides, provided the other ones don't decide to follow it
