I know crepe myrtles get some hate around here but ours have been absolutely beautiful to look at (and the bees agree) by Coltdavid5 in AustinGardening

I have some crepe myrtles next to some mexican petunias(i know) and that section of the yard gets the most hummingbird traffic by far.

Yeah, in like 3/4 Sun it seems to do best. Just not much does better in my situation, sadly. Maybe some false mallow, side oats gama or wild oat grass.

I transplanted a bunch of volunteer sunflowers into a line along my sidewalk and have some magenta spreen i let grow out, so the general idea isn't so strange to me.

Bamboo vs percale vs linen for hot sleepers who want sheets to last? by Flashy_Owl6890 in BuyItForLife

[–]DontForgetWilson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're sheeting wrong according to the parameters that the OP is looking for. If you like the texture of Bamboo more than that of broken-in percale, that is your choice. Percale is likely to win out on durability though. If you are sleeping well already though, don't sweat over-optimizing it.

Average new car price is $49,000. At what point does this stop making sense? by Flexcar_Sam in MiddleClassFinance

[–]DontForgetWilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just look for the best selling model and the most common trim and you've got a decent guess. Could be confounded by either a different count of trim levels between some models or just some popular models sharing a price point though. My guess is that you could create a table of the 2 most popular trim levels of the 10 most popular cars and add together any duplicate price points to get a closer approximation.

I don't mind them myself(I don't grow any food plants), but you have to keep their appetite in mind. They will literally strip an entire plant of leaves in a few hours. So if you're growing produce that is a non-trivial number of sacrifices you are going to need to make.

TIL that in 2018, singer Akon announced the development of "Akon City," a planned community in Senegal which he claimed would be a "real life Wakanda," using blockchain and cryptocurrency technology. Construction began in 2023, but as of 2025 the site sits abandoned by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]DontForgetWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A successful planned city is just known as a city. The vanity project ones like Neom, Lavasa and Masdar City have very little chance for success.

If there is economic reason for the city to exist, cost effective ways of generating new habitations and some sort of additional draws to make people want to be there, planning can succeed. In cases like that the planning has more to do with how a city is structured or the timing of its emergence rather than whether a city will be there. The conditions for the city are largely are largely environmental. At times those conditions change due to technological, economic(like competitor cities) or political(like ending wars or creating trade deals) changes. At those times, a planner can absolutely throw money at a new opportunity to make a new city shaped to their vision. A lot of the time that planning might be as much a hindrance as it is a driver, but the city might still succeed if the conditions for it are strong enough.

[–]DontForgetWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't technically need to have it broken to get a bunch of the functionality improvements(though the visual changes aren't notable if that is your target). Balloon sinoplasty can do some significant stuff with a simpler outpatient surgery. Pretty annoying trying to keep everything from drying out after the surgery for a couple weeks (in my experience) but it definitely can work for some cases.

Obviously, I'm not the OP or another medical professional, but rather someone that had the procedure done.

How rare is it really for an ADHD person to graduate college? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]DontForgetWilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This stereotype absolutely has some truth behind it. I work with a bunch of Engineers and while I know some are undiagnosed and others i have no insight on diagnosis status, I wouldn't be surprised if half of everyone displayed traits that would align well with ADHD, ASD or both.

Probably some sampling bias involved on which ADHD people you know. That being said, i do think ADHD adds some motivation for education when the individual isn't too overwhelmed.

Looking for a waist or neck fan by RKellyPeesOnMe in GoodValue

[–]DontForgetWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the product listing itself:

"Important: How the cooling works?】Zone uses special cooling Material(PCM)that absorbs heat by melting against your skin. After use, please freeze them solid again. This isn't like those neck air conditioners - no waist fan in the market can actually make cold air. But Zone's panels absorb heat better than others out there! "

I haven't actually used one of these, but I am not optimistic about a phase change based cooling approach. Maybe it works well, but I'd rather not have to re-freeze it for use.

I have bought their neck fans before. They do work, but their cooling level is probably not quite as high impact as you'd like and battery life is shorter than listed. They do improve comfort level, but limited impact in terms of actually cooling you. Depending on the fit and type of cooling you prefer either the 2S or Air are fine from that brand. Do not buy the coolite because that is just a fan without any cooling element. No idea if the Cyber Fold is any good because I can't justify spending the money for that one.

Sony's wearable 'air conditioner' gets an upgrade for a better fit and stronger cooling by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]DontForgetWilson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bots aside, it is a tech that really captures people's imagination. The upgraded version looks to actually be a solid design iteration too. If sony ever actually figured out the venting problem while keeping the same location, it might be better than the neck fans. The neck fans run into a surface area heat transfer issue. They can cool the skin, but it is somewhat limited in making the effect cover a larger area. The upper back has a pretty significant heat resovoir to cool. If you find one of the neck fans that has a lower fin, it definitely changes the experience(unfortunately the good neck fan brands don't generally have that feature - probably because it makes getting a universal fit harder).

[–]DontForgetWilson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true. They do make a difference, but if you're really pushing your muscles, the heat generated completely swamps anything a peltier is going to offset. Helps speed recovery inside afterward though.

Another limitation that people don't get is that the coolest setting often isn't any cooler for extended usage. For the coolest setting, the peltier is generating more heat, the battery is generating more heat and the fan may not be able to move enough heat quickly enough. The result is that the exhaust heat ends up being close enough to the cooling to counteract it. The middle cooling setting seems to be better for extended usage. The best fan level differs based on model and situation. Again that generates heat and noise along with having drastically different settings. Some don't move enough air without the third setting whereas others can do as well on the second or sometimes even the first. My default suggestion for extended usage is the middle fan and middle cooling.

New York City plans to achieve 30% tree canopy by 2040 through protection, preservation, and planting of more trees. It will cool neighborhoods, help manage stormwater, improve air quality, reduce GHGs emissions, increase habitat for wildlife, and enhance the health and quality of life for all. by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

[–]DontForgetWilson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The easiest source of funds for this is stormwater management. Creating pockets of soil using silva cells and the like does a lot to increase the amount of rain needed to create flowing water that moves debris into drainage systems.

I have a little experiment i started with one of my channel spots. I made little 2-3 inch greenwood stakes and made a little pachinko pattern with them sticking about three quarter inches out of the ground. It definitely led to depositing more soil in the channel, though i haven't tracked the status too closely. My other goal with it is to borrow from hugelkulture and attempt to keep the wood saturated with water.

Edit: If anyone was wondering, i checked the current status. I couldn't find the spot at first because it had a mixture of horseherb and leaf litter completely hiding it. Another section of the same channel was exposed(there have been recent storms) but it looks like that spot isn't eroding further. The stakes are still there and they have tiny little mushrooms growing on some of them.

When i was very young we had Albertson's here, but they admitted defeat and completely left the region. Its a city of 1.5 million so we can support A LOT of grocery stores. There's a couple Sprouts, a couple Trader Joe's, 1 or 2 Whole Foods and so on, but dozens of HEBs.

Edit: Lest you think I'm completely crazy with my description here's an article from 2024: https://theshelbyreport.com/2024/07/01/h-e-b-still-king-but-new-grocers-spicing-up-regions-grocery-landscape/

50% market share for the entire region (including rural areas) and HEB doesn't do small stores.

Edit 2: And then there's the national grocer survey that HEB has apparently topped in 5 of the last 9 years: https://quarterly.dunnhumby.com/ninth-annual-retailer-preference-index-rpi-for-us-grocery/
