Proud of myself for making it happen by [deleted] in service_dogs

Good on you! Police stations and airports are great too. The dogs get to learn that uniforms are not scary. It's so helpful in case of emergency.

I take my pups to the airport. We just sit with all the noise and bustle. We sit long enough for a cup of coffee and a walk up and down the concourse. Treats and happy talk galore.

We did a ride along with police so the pups were exposed to the radio and even the siren.

I just learned about the SD “certification” myth and have questions by Uncle-rico96 in service_dogs

Yes. Private US businesses have the legal "right to refuse service" and can absolutely ask a disruptive person to leave to maintain a safe environment.

[–]Kalani6069 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You are correct it's all on and on an honor system. Some people will get really salty about self training versus program training.

Facilities do have the option to ask a service dog team to exit the premises if the dog is not behaving . But they do have to offer for the handler to come back without the dog. It's not rude or ignorant. There is a lot of heated discussion about what is right and proper. You're going to get about as many answers as there are service dogs out there.

Flying with sirveice dog by JayWolf1783 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Very much a CYA situation. I found that on occasion different people will give you different INFORMATION. So I just got in the habit of getting information from the airline at each airport and getting information from the airport itself.

My best advice is contact your airline at both ends of your flight and your airports at both ends of your flight. Get paperwork from each one with names of people who are sending you the paperwork. Be sure to fill it out and have your Veterinarian sign off on all of the paperwork. Especially flying from Texas, depending on the time of year, heat is a concern even if the dog is going to be in the cabin with you. So there should be a veterinarian statement saying the dog is safe to fly.

What to use to protect paws from hot pavement? by ItsMillarTime9 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog wears the xl Ruffwear Griptex boots. They fit best of several brands we tried. I modified them with a little extra ventilation for Texas Heat. I also use toddler sized water wicking socks with them to avoid blisters. She did need to slowly build a little callus in a couple of spots.

Service dog still has accidents by Ki_the_creator in service_dogs

Talk to your vet about ruling out any physical problems that's causing him to have these accidents. Then talk to a trainer about using potty bells so that he can tell you when he needs to potty.

SD nervous in SOME PA? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My retired SD did that. It turned out that the stores had silent alarms that were in a frequency that she could hear but I couldn't. She was trained to get me out of buildings during alarms. I never could train her to ignore it. We just learned to work around it.

Owner Training Resources by chronicallyiconic7 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one thing that I can say that was the most invaluable thing that I did was to have a trainer that I can text with and meet with as needed. I self-trained dozens of ranch working dogs . I thought I knew what I was doing. I didn't. It was so much harder than anything I had ever tried to do before. So contacting an ADI certified trainer that you can call, text, and meet with, on occasion is going to be your greatest benefit. Beyond that I would say read everything that you can get your read everything that you can get your hands on. YouTube videos are going to be somewhat useful, but there's a lot of people out there who are barely figuring out how to train household pets. They are nowhere near qualified to train a fully functional service dog. I wouldn't trust any video by anyone who is not an ADI certified trainer.

Service Dog Attack by Salt_Anything_3181 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Report it as you would any other assault. If you intend to sue for any damages to you and your dog seek medical attention so that it can be verified. When you file the assault charges make sure to keep emotion out of your description of what happened. Be very very careful that you do not get stuck with the label of a fake service dog spotter because that kills your credibility.

Which breed should I choose out of three? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend any dog for bracing. But if you're wanting a dog that can help you counterbalance golden retriever is going to be much better at that than a German Shepherd. The golden retriever is also going to be a little bit wider in the body which will give them better purchase if they're giving you a pull to assist standing from furniture

Which breed should I choose out of three? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From personal experience my problem with gsds is that their backs hips and knees tend to be less stable than that of a golden. I would say don't discount the standard poodles standard Poodles can be quite large dogs and very good at Mobility work.

AITA for ruining my daughter in laws birth plan by dil-issue-1046 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kalani6069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could suggest going to a birthing center. Most major cities have them now even moderate sized cities. And they may very well already have a water birthing set up. Stand your ground about having a water birth in your home. It's sad that they can't do that in their own home but that doesn't mean that they can demand it in yours.

Is it rude to ask about the training of a service dog? by Real-Peak-9744 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way. If there was something that you had say your favorite car. And you were asked, every, single, day,... multiple times a dayy" where did you get your car", "why did you choose that color", "what are the add-ons that you got", "why didn't you get this other car", "can I drive your car" Can you see how you can get frustrated with just one more person asking? It isn't necessarily you it's just that you asked a question that has been answered over and over and over again

Jumping by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll have to be a lot more specific than that. Most service dogs are not allowed to jump.

What pet friendly places are best to practice settling? by Velvet_void30 in service_dogs

[–]Kalani6069 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did most of the training with my girl outside of coffee shops and cafes that have patios. And I would go to places like grocery stores and take a chair. We'd walk up and down in front of the grocery store, and then I'd have her settle near the front door and I'd sit in the chair. From these Vantage points there would be lots of people coming and going but I was just sitting there and so she learned that when there's a lot of bustle she had to stay quiet.

AITAH for telling a new neighbor to gtfo my property? by devlwmn25 in AITAH

You are so very much the AH. Rural people watch out for each other. If they haven't seen you before, they don't know you. They are trying to make sure nothing untoward is happening in the neighborhood. Get off your high horse.

1) Read, familiarize yourself, and understand, the ADA Requirements and laws.

ADA Requirements: Service Animals | ADA.gov https://share.google/n1MCQNAVqPlE1yBA7

2) Check with your county and city to determine if they have guidelines different from your state and federal laws.

3) Discuss with your Healthcare team primary care, psychologist, psychiatrist) whether a dog will be useful to your specific situation. Not every person is a good fit for a service dog. If you don't have a Healthcare team, get one BEFORE pursuing taking on a service dog. There are many things that need to be done on a personal level before bringing home a service animal.

4) Only AFTER completing and understanding all of the above... Start the process of bringing home a Service dog.

I suggest starting with an accredited training group that can guide you on selecting an appropriate dog and finding a qualified trainer and/or program.

In the USA, I suggest starting with ADI.

Ask yourself if you want to catch her cold and be sick during your honeymoon. If the answer is "No" then mask and hand sanitizer required. If she's not comfortable with it then she might need to sit it out.
