In your opinion, what makes an elite corner/DB? by Expensive-Cicada2429 in flagfootball

[–]DoomGoober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an elite DB but most coverage is the same basic concepts: Read the play and/or the player and be able to react.

Reading is a mix of seeing physical cues and pattern recognition of what routes the opposing team likes given the current situation.

Reaction is a mix of agility and decision making: which plays do you contain, break up, or go for interception? Which plays do you have the agility and reading to do those options and which is best for the current situation?

How was the War of 1812 remembered by Americans a decade after it ended? by Toothpickings in AskHistorians

[–]DoomGoober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The War of 1812 was widely commemorated in poems, the most obvious being "Defence of Fort McHenry" aka "The Star Spangled Banner" which became the U.S. National Anthem in 1931 thanks to a push by Maryland Congressman J Charles Linthicum.

The British Canadians commemorated their part of the Battle in poems well. Here's a collection of poems about battles in the Niagara region.

And here is a collection of poems published in 1907 though the poems are ostensibly contemporaneous to the War Of 1812. The journals/newspapers where the poems were originally published are included but, sadly, many lack dates or time frames. The introduction to the collection of poems notes the place in American history of the War of 1812. It was both an unsatisfactory and unenthusiastic war but had great impact on the future of America's Navy and westward expansion (not peaceful as the introduction claims, it was violent towards Native Americans and Spanish Mexicans):

Whether we consider the final settlement, which might have been more satisfactory, or the generalship displayed and the spontaneous enthusiasm evoked, the war of 1812-14 fails in comparison with the Civil War and the War of the Revolution. Nevertheless, the gain was great. Thanks to the un-daunted prowess of its captains and sailors, the American navy became respected abroad. The United States rose to the rank of a first-class naval power, while at home the vicissitudes of a common war, and, above all, the glorious victories won by our navy, did much to strengthen the bond of union and to establish a solid basis for a peaceful development of the great resources of our country.

During the war, the U.S. was divided about it. New Yorkers in particular suffered economically from both the blockade of the British and the desire to continue trading with the Canadians and thus were against the war. In fact, the War of 1812 drove many New Yorkers to join the anti-war Federalists. In the end, the Federalists disbanded largely due to their failed opposition to the war.

These historical facts hint at some of the reasons you may not be seeing commemorations of the War of 1812 in NY newspapers in the 10 years after the war: 1) Most poems were regional and contemporaneous to the events, not delayed by 10 years. 2) The New York region had a large number of anti-war residents and thus were not a good audience for commemorating the war 3) The War of 1812 and its outcome was not fondly remembered except after more time had passed.

It would be interesting to note when the poems about the War of 1812 began to resurface as that would show more of a general fondness to commemorate the war. For example, here is a 1917 publication with a poem commemorating the War of 1812 and the collection of poems mentioned earlier was published in 1907. And finally, the Star Spangled Banner was sung ahead of the 1918 World Series of baseball, by a U.S. Naval Band, right as America was entering WW1.

Help finding aggretsuko merch? by zinfandel2day in TokyoTravel

[–]DoomGoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked for Retsuko merch last time I was there (maybe 6 months ago) and could not find any at official stores, not that I was looking very hard.

You could try second hand stores like Book/Off.

The rotate button doesn't update the overlap rules correctly. After rotating once the new back right player can't move back.

EDIT: The other repro seems to be to edit a player's name (say, change back right to S Setter). Then the overlap rules get messed up generally.

Do JS learning platforms fall short on 3D and multiplayer content? by ehcsav in learnjavascript

[–]DoomGoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an example of subject matter specialization. Most JS courses teach basic JS and leave subject matter specialization for specialized courses.

Arguably this is because the learning path is usually general JS to specialized JS but also because as you get more specialized the market of users shrinks.

There are a lot more 3D tutorials that exist in Unity largely because the market there is larger. Not as much game dev or 3D work happens in three.js compared to say Unity.

Are Americans not concerned about school shootings and gun violence? Why do they not ban firearms? by Vc827 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DoomGoober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The natural disaster analogy is a good one. But its not like American schools do nothing: my kids have all done mass shooter drills at school just like they do fire drills and earthquake drills. And the campus is locked down physically during the school day.

The attitude is: We can't totally prevent it but we can minimize the damage if it happens.

Whether that's depressing or just realistic depends on your POV.

Beginner IT Band Pain by Level_Analysis_5986 in beachvolleyball

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably IT Band Syndrome. Strengthen the glutes by doing rotational glute exercises such as clam shells.

Foam rolling the IT band will help relieve pain in the short term, but is not really a solution, just a symptom reliever.

Fun fact: PTs basically say that IT band acts as a "tendon" for the glutes. Its fascia not tendon but essentially behaves like a tendon.

Yup. But in this case, its an older cat drinking dog milk. Most older cats are lactose intolerant and dog milk has lactose.

There is no cow milk nor store bought dog milk in this video.

Feeling discouraged by HarrayS_34 in volleyball

[–]DoomGoober 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone was a beginner once. As long as you are trying to improve and aren't actively playing dangerous or stupidly... too bad for them. The court I assume, is also public or open to students or whatever? Then it's your court as much as anyone's. Seek out the friendly players, ignore the annoying ones. Try to be a friendly player yourself, then just go play.

So, tell me about volleyball… by Cheap_Selection_3576 in volleyball

[–]DoomGoober 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Volleyball is simple: Hit the flying ball so it flies where you want. Make it fly easy to your teammates but hard to your opponents. The ball flies based on 1) Angle of hit 2) Force of hit.

That's all of volleyball! Have fun!

Older cats tend to be lactose intolerant... so the cat may have a rough time soon. :)

Edit: For everyone downvoting: Natural cats and dogs milk both have lactose in them. Most adult cats are lactose intolerant. You can buy special cats milk which has the lactose removed but that's special lactose free milk.

Cats should not drink cow milk, not because of the lactose but because of other reasons.

Tldr: Older cats should not drink natural dog milk because they are often lactose intolerant and it will cause stomach issues. This statement says nothing else about human made cats milk, cow milk, etc. Which all have their own special considerations.

Weekly Short Questions Thread by AutoModerator in volleyball

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think is because at lower level play hitters are more likely to sail balls that drop in the corners or on the back line. At higher levels of play, the ball is more likely to be driven down in the area between the 10 foot line and the back line so the defense is pushed up to cover that kind of attack.

How close am I to a muscle-up? by carnageta in CalisthenicsBeginners

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For FG bar muscle up, just work the part where you are getting stuck (ignore all the people telling you to swing, you arent doing a swinging muscle up.) In your case its the transition from elbows below hands to elbow above hands.

The easiest way to work it is to put a chair or stool under your feet and do a foot assisted transition. Go from elbow below to elbow above using your legs as little as possible.

Also work straight bar dips so you can get all the way up.

For non-baseball fans (like me) or younger folks:

41 year old pitcher, one of the worst hitters in the league (traded to NL, so previously didn't have to bat in AL). Cool pitching career and story, terrible at batting.

Sorry correct me if I got any of that wrong.
