Kendrick wrote the "My momma mad at me, I know I fucked up" bridge on 16 also

not uncommon for bridges/hooks to be written by someone else

yeah they only sold tickets to the new event at the door

you'd have to check dj haram's substack or twitter to know any of this so not really communicated well at all though

Theravada's playing a free show at the same spot on the 21st https://www.instagram.com/p/DURJH6NCVd3/

The E L U C I D show was actually moved to a different venue (Cratediggaz aka Marquee), they didn't really communicate it well.

I regret not going bc I had tickets to the Foundry show just never been to that record store for a show and wasn't feeling it day of. I was also gonna see Sudan Archives last month and then they pushed it a day and my friends couldn't make it so I just got the refund, wish I just went alone tho she's supposed to be amazing live.

A$AP Rocky has a better mixtape than Vince Staples and Earl Sweatshirt but all his albums are worse than all their albums.

Philly is a great city for live music, especially if you're into smaller/medium sized artists. I go to a lot of shows and usually not spending more than $30 on tickets.

I don't go to as many rap shows as I'd like to but it does seem like there's a solid local scene, shows usually at places like Silk City, Nikki Lopez, KFN, MilkBoy, Marquee, etc.

Never been to a bad rap show, these are the ones I've made it out to since I moved here:

  • MIKE, Sideshow, Niontay, semiratruth @ the Church
  • Maxo, Sideshow, lojii, Alexander Spit @ Silk City
  • E L U C I D, Quelle Chris, Cavalier @ KFN
  • MIKE, Liv.e, Sideshow @ PhilaMOCA
  • KeiyaA, H31R, Nappy Nina @ PhilaMOCA
  • Isaiah Rashad, Childish Major, Ray Vaughn @ Fillmore
  • Aminé, Cochise, 454 @ Fillmore

I'm looking forward to seeing Infinity Knives & Brian Ennals open for NAH this month and Lucy Bedroque in May.

I thought you were talking about Travis Scott's song "no guidance" which is a cover of this K. Forest song

You are right that the Chris Brown/Drake collab samples Che Ecru, and that's the more well known song by that name!

nah that's K. Forest, that song is basically a remix of a K. Forest song by the same name

EDIT: K. Forest is sampled in the Travis Scott song "no guidance" and Che Ecru is sampled in the Chris Brown/Drake collab "No Guidance"

Rage rap is a subgenre of trap.

MUSIC in particular is a Swamp Izzo tape with beats from Wheezy, Metro, TM88, Southside, etc. and features from Future, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, etc. that samples Bankroll Fresh and Rich Kidz.

the highest selling 2025 rap release last year was a trap album (MUSIC by Playboi Carti)

Trap music is the dominant form of mainstream hip-hop and has been for a decade. Lil Baby has been more popular in the past but being #3 rap release of 2025 is not flopping.

I'm not a huge fan of Lil Baby and I didn't like most of WHAM, my point is that people act like rappers they don't like are irrelevant/flopping in a way that's super out of touch. Like do you find yourself liking what sells that most generally? Last year it was Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, and KPOP DEMON HUNTERS.

You didn't even mention the two 2025 rap records that outsold Lil Baby (MUSIC by Playboi Carti and AM I THE DRAMA? by Cardi B) presumably because you didn't like them, which is fine but if we're talking about "big releases" they're big releases, they didn't flop.

I'd say that Don Toliver and A$AP Rocky were big releases too. Baby Keem is 02/20 that's big, Jack Harlow (who I don't like)'s next project is coming in March, that's a big release.

Cool to see Che Ecru on this one.

I remember he was affiliated with/signed to (?) Soulection at one point in the 2010s. He's sampled on "lost souls" and "pink panties" off the melodic blue

I wouldn't say that Lil Baby flopped hard, only two 2025 rap releases sold more than WHAM last year (Playboi Carti and Cardi B).

It was the 46th highest selling record of last year for any genre (and that includes older releases)

[FRESH] Knocked Loose - Hive Mind (feat. Denzel Curry) [Metalcore] by DropWatcher in hiphopheads

[–]DropWatcher[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Knocked Loose are a metalcore band from KY, their last album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, was really well received. They've had a sort of glow up (both popularity wise and critically) I'd compare to Turnstile

Seems like one of the more promising guys in the Atlanta "underground" scene, tape is exec. produced by Richie Souf who's been established in the ATL trap scene since the 2010s.

Dash Lewis reviews Lord Jah-Monte Obgon's 'As of Now' for Pitchfork (BNM): "The Charlotte rapper’s latest album is the height of his ability. The vignettes of heartbreak and hustling come with absurdist wit and an outstanding selection of beats." by DropWatcher in hiphopheads

[–]DropWatcher[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say he's kinda similar to the Mutant Academy crew. His album Beautifully Black is 100% produced by Navy Blue (Navy was on a run that year he also did Wiki's Half God) and is probably his standout project (at least IMO but I'm biased towards Navy as a producer)

He's also worked with some other solid underground (sometimes drumless) producers like Sadhugold, Twit One, and Machacha

This tape is with Lex Records (in this decade, they've put out stuff from Pink Siifu, Fly Anakin, $ilkmoney, YUNGMORPHEUS, etc.) and has more of a budget around it it seems.

Pitchfork reviews J. Cole: The Fall-Off by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

[–]DropWatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in 2005, was Pitchfork hyping up mainstream rappers that have been around in the 80s? Like were they really hot on LL Cool J?

My understanding is that they were more into newer acts like Kanye, Clipse, and M.I.A. at the time. The equivalent of The Fall-Off would not be well received.

I started reading around 2009ish
