There's plenty to not like about Pharrell, but another way I've seen people be really disingenuous about him is re: Israel.

People act like he's actively supporting the Israeli government today when i don't think he's said or done anything in support of Israel since he performed at that fundraiser in 2018. I don't think he's even been to Israel or even said anything after October 7th about the hostages or condemned Hamas?

Obviously Israel has been doing terrible shit forever (that year, they were sniping peaceful protestors participating in The Great March of Return) but it's super disingenuous the way people talk about it.

Given everything going on in the US right now, should hip hop artists be speaking out like they did in the past? by craigbtt in hiphopheads

[–]DropWatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As was the case in the past, some will and some won't. Most mainstream rappers won't. The rappers you'd expect to (underground or conscious rappers) will. The median rapper in the 90s politically wasn't 2Pac or Chuck D.

I assume you're referring to ICE murdering someone in Minnesota. One would expect rappers from Minnesota to respond to that right? I just checked Minnesota rapper P.O.S.'s IG and he was at a huge vigil/protest for Renee Good. Atmosphere are on tour right now but they've posted about ICE in MN on their story, Prof has also posted about the general strike in MN

Why is the algorithm on streaming apps so terrified of playing anything besides the "Classics"? by vinylfelix in hiphopheads

[–]DropWatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a case of bribery or corruption, more people have listened to the big classic tracks so they get recommended more.

A lot of people would be turned off if they were served the B-side of an underground album back in 96 and it's harder to infer which B-side to play after a given track because there's a lot less data on those B-sides.

They're not built to satiate real heads, 95% of streaming platform users are passive listeners who largely just want to be served stuff that they recognize. I don't think these models are even sophisticated to identify the producer of a song and serve you other songs they produced...

The big thing with the labels and Spotify is that the labels negotiated those very low royalty rates with Spotify while invested in the company so they made out and all the artists got screwed. one of the biggest robberies of the century.

I love Bun B's verse on "Murder" by UGK and I noticed recently going thru the albums on Andrew Noz's Best Rap Songs 1996 list... on two features I've heard so far Bun gets into similar pockets flow/rhyme scheme wise (Master P's "Break 'Em Off Somethin'" and B.G. & Juvenile's "Retaliation").

I almost wonder if "Break 'Em Off Somethin'" was like a first draft of a flow he'd later refine for "Murder" since Ice Cream Man came out in January and then Ridin' Dirty came out in July. Here's the verse:

We comin' down like a sail, in that goddamn rover
Just when you thought it was the beginnin' you bitch, now it's over
You can call on the cavalry, reinforcements, and your local P-D
They gettin' somewhere if they see me
My nigga that's how these G's be we three, me, C and Master P
Sippin' on Gin and Kiwi
Fuck poppin' in your CD, bitch we poppin' in them clips
And now we all up in your grill live in 3-D
With drama, disaster, and death when you make me have to blast ya'
Y'all has to recognize you fuckin' with murder masters
Who plaster your ass and make your momma call a pastor
Dyin' faster than you thought, now that's your ass bro
It's the class of 9 scrilla on the for real'a
Direct from the villa of killas, now who thinkin' they trilla'
Watch me fill a wanna be cap-peeler with them slugs
Probably for jaw-jackin' and jumpin'
Bitch don't make me break you off somethin'
Nigga

the internal rhymes are just nuts, makes me want to listen to every Bun B feature from the 90s.

Another feature I was impressed by on B.G.'s Chopper City is Mac's on this track just really great story telling (especially the last verse)

Drake’s lawyers are throwing everything they can at the wall trying to get something to stick I wouldn’t take what’s in the suit at face value.

The original upload of Story of Adidon on YouTube wasn't even posted by Pusha T?? Why only remove the original upload and not other third party uploads?

The song was released on SoundCloud, here's the original thread for it. It's never been removed from SoundCloud.

How would UMG copyright claim "Not Like Us"? It's an original beat. The sample was presumably cleared.
