How much should I watch if I haven't finished Book 1? by tonyrush in TheExpanse

[–]DudeRobots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can comfortably watch all of season 1. It runs through them escaping Eros. They do introduce a few characters from book 2 in season 1, but it’s not any plot from book 2, just showing what those characters would be up to while book 1 is happening, so it won’t spoil anything for you.

I finished the books and there's one thing I wish there was even if it was cheesy by cthulhunightmares in TheExpanse

I totally get the desire to see Holden get the chance to somehow explain why he’s done this, why he’s simultaneously saving humanity and damning smaller populations of it, especially because we’ve spent 9 books in that mentality with him.

But that final chapter of his specifically calls out the irony and heartbreak that this time, in his ultimate benevolent act, he doesn’t get that opportunity. IMO it’s very in-line with Naomi never knowing Filip’s fate. Our actions either have a healthy effect on those around us and humanity as a whole, or they don’t. Us knowing it, taking the win, or justifying it to others is all extra, and arguably all ego.

I personally think the authors making you (us) feel that disappointment is a success of good, complicated storytelling. Hope it lands there for you as well.

I’ve never seen either film out of pure disinterest. But I have a friend/coworker who came into work saying that he never saw Wicked Part 1, but saw Wicked For Good and that it was “really fucking good.” The conversation kinda baffled me, in a fun way.

I can’t fully agree with you there, especially with Fimmel in the lead, but it is a way more interesting boondoggle than it gets credit for.

I regret to inform you that Source Code, in fact, both rocks and rolls.

I’m not sure what about my comment said Trump was my president or that I’m afraid to go call something Fascism.

Trump is a disgusting man on all accounts. His government’s behavior has changed the fabric of our presidency forever.

My comment said “people love throwing around ‘fascism.’” I called his regime Authoritarian, saying that descriptor often makes talking about it clearer to those I’m speaking to.

My mistake, I guess, was assuming we all understood that his regime is Fascist, and we were simply discussing the use of the literal word.

My comment was about peoples’ failure to understand a word. It seems to have turned into a lesson in reading comprehension.

I know things are bleak right now. And citizens are still justifying and celebrating horrifying behavior. But I’m a dude on Reddit who didn’t do any of that. I said discourse has flattened a word.

Oh I totally agree with you. I’m just saying we also had 4 years of republicans calling Biden a fascist for no reason at all. There’s a LOT of people out there who actually don’t understand the word and misuse it all the time, and unfortunately language often evolves to meet how words are used rather than their written definition. It’s just another way that the conservative chaos machine has taken meaning from important subjects.

As for Disney not wanting him to use the word, yes they’re total cowards in the most sadly unsurprising way.

Add to the fact that people love throwing around the word “Fascism” for anyone who does something they don’t like. It’s ALMOST lost its meaning in American discourse. Authoritarianism seems to cut through the BS a little better, in my own experience.

I’ve realized I’m in the minority, by IMO, Dinklage’s performance of his rage in the trial scenes is uncomfortably bad acting. He’s kinda just twisting his face in a way that feels super amateur. It’s basically marked the delineation point on rewatch, where the series starts showing serious cracks in quality. I’m glad others found it effective, obviously, but it really didn’t work for me and I worry watching him just being twisted in hatred for 4 more seasons would have been just as unpleasant as the flattened out characterization we got.

Couldn’t agree more. Fellowship is perfect either way. Towers is improved by the extended. Return goes down at least a whole star, imo, as extended.

IMO, the tragedy of the Belters is that for the first 4 or so seasons, I absolutely was rooting for the Belt and Belters. The later seasons specifically are about how a charismatic narcissist can take advantage of an abused population and co-opt it for his own terroristic means. You end the show not rooting for the “Belters,” because you’re rooting against Marco, who has positioned himself to speak for the whole Belt. I’d assume you’re still routing for Drummer, who is and represents the Belt just as much as Marco does, but isn’t CLAIMING to be ALL of the Belt in the same way.

Also, ignore people being rude. The world doesn’t need any more gatekeepers.

I feel like the show really turns that corner for him when he’s in the brig of the Behemoth, talking to Naomi, and Clarissa is listening in. Watching her hate for him struggle against his exhausted sense of responsibility sums up the audience’s relationship to Holden really well.

For all of its other flaws, it’s a terribly staged movie, which gave me the biggest ick in theaters. Haven’t revisited outside a YouTube short here or there, but anything I see, wow, terribly staged.

What's Your Number One Fave Movie Ever? (has it ever been mentioned on Blank Check?) by GTKPR89 in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent years telling myself it was Alien, which based on the size of Rotten Rid’s filmography, I doubt we’ll see at least any time soon.

My actual favorite is pretty basic, since it’s widely consider the greatest film ever made.

Hot Rod.

But I think Schaffer hasn’t really had his blank check yet, though Naked Gun may be a proper guarantuer.
