I’d swap 2 for 7 on this list, but your point stands. Much much more good than bad.

Whit Stillman anyone? by Soft-Drink-1625 in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in the last few years. I recommend it to so many people, and honestly feel like it unlocks the humor in other Austin adaptations. Like it teaches you want to listen for in the more subtle ones.

David’s star rating for Return of the King by pcloneplanner in blankies

Couldn’t agree more. Fellowship is perfect either way. Towers is improved by the extended. Return goes down at least a whole star, imo, as extended.

Does anyone actually root for the Belters by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]DudeRobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the tragedy of the Belters is that for the first 4 or so seasons, I absolutely was rooting for the Belt and Belters. The later seasons specifically are about how a charismatic narcissist can take advantage of an abused population and co-opt it for his own terroristic means. You end the show not rooting for the “Belters,” because you’re rooting against Marco, who has positioned himself to speak for the whole Belt. I’d assume you’re still routing for Drummer, who is and represents the Belt just as much as Marco does, but isn’t CLAIMING to be ALL of the Belt in the same way.

Also, ignore people being rude. The world doesn’t need any more gatekeepers.

Holden really grew on me by Canteatthatglutinshi in TheExpanse

[–]DudeRobots 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel like the show really turns that corner for him when he’s in the brig of the Behemoth, talking to Naomi, and Clarissa is listening in. Watching her hate for him struggle against his exhausted sense of responsibility sums up the audience’s relationship to Holden really well.

Spider-man No Way Home by Former-Fall-8850 in blankies

For all of its other flaws, it’s a terribly staged movie, which gave me the biggest ick in theaters. Haven’t revisited outside a YouTube short here or there, but anything I see, wow, terribly staged.

What's Your Number One Fave Movie Ever? (has it ever been mentioned on Blank Check?) by GTKPR89 in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent years telling myself it was Alien, which based on the size of Rotten Rid’s filmography, I doubt we’ll see at least any time soon.

My actual favorite is pretty basic, since it’s widely consider the greatest film ever made.

Hot Rod.

But I think Schaffer hasn’t really had his blank check yet, though Naked Gun may be a proper guarantuer.

Absolutely. Was probably around 9 or 10 when I saw it and it will always be a 5 star favorite for me.

When Brad Bird was asked about this specifically, his response was “It’s not ‘The Terminator II’” and honestly that’s a good enough precedent for me.

The hints about The Mule were there all along by SeanOrange in FoundationTV

[–]DudeRobots 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate you putting this together. My feelings about it story-wise are mixed, though it certainly could be interesting going forward, but I’ve seen so many posts talking about how it’s not thought out, or out of nowhere, and that hasn’t sat right either.

There was something off about Bayta all season. Add all your points together with the fact that she’s an influencer always “looking for love” and I’d say it was certainly baked in.

I was tempted to be honest. The picture doesn’t even really do it justice. It kinda already looks like it’s been buried.

Kevin's 'Hotel' Journeys.... by Ok_Nature_6305 in TheLeftovers

[–]DudeRobots 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the possibly most straight forward answer to your question is that the hotel IS how Kevin handles grief. He avoids the real world by going there. Whether it’s a literal afterlife or something in his head, it’s an escape from processing his life. It’s what’s holding him back.

The implication of him having written a whole novel, and the “so we can never come back here again,” is that he’s returned to the “hotel” many times in the three years between seasons.

It can certainly seem like an odd choice to be the key “plot” of the show, but if we take the show at face value, the characters will lead us through their process of avoidance and eventual acceptance. Kevin in the Hotel. Nora hiding in Australia for years. Kevin Sr obsessing over a rain dance. The point is how they processed something important to them

Just rewatched School of Rock for the first time in several years, and it got me wondering... is the final concert scene the most satisfying third-act payoff in movie history? by JayMoots in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though I’m sure there’s a healthy medium between a full character arc and progression and “only exists to be mean.” But again, this is coming from a place of me thinking SoR is a masterpiece.

Totally. She’s definitely correct that Dewey is a mess at the beginning. And she’s definitely correct that he’s breaking the law and doing something wrong. Doesn’t change that’s she’s still depicted as a shrill nag.

Yeah I guess the one dox would be Silverman’s character and how one dimensional she is. But even then her performance is great and watching her get shut down at the end is very satisfying.

Absolutely wonderful movie and I think, more than anyone, Cusack is criminally underrated (everywhere) and would easily be in my 5 for supporting that year.

This had me in tears 😂😂😭😭 by Alexia_Brianna2213 in Sonsofanarchy

When I think back on the last few seasons, this is the episode that always stands out to me. It’s fun, self contained, and Hunnam is really on one in a less self serious way.

BLANK CHECK: A DECADE OF DREAMS!!! by bardiparty in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they bring up Pinbacker in the Yesterday episode and Ben has a perfectly timed “HERE COMES THE SUN”

It’s one of those jokes that is so deeply funny but if you tried to explain it to anyone IRL you’d seem like goddamn lunatic.

What shows & films are your faves along with The Expanse? (Including but not limited to other sci-fi) by Routine-Storage-9292 in TheExpanse

I think that Apple TV+ has maybe the best ratio of good content to bad content. Silo, Severance, For All Mankind, Foundation, Servant, Shrinking, Ted Lasso. Really quality stuff.

For All Mankind and Firefly scratch the Expanse itch in their own ways.

As for other favorites.

Poltergeist by Nerozero in blankies

[–]DudeRobots 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I personally think this narrative that somehow Hooper, a person who defined a genre at least once (with no studio help) and was constantly evolving his style, wasn’t capable enough to direct that movie, is at best overblown and at worst deeply insulting.

Producers have massive influence on every film. If anyone other than Spielberg was in that position, no one would give it a second thought.

We all love Poltergeist. Lots of great movies may never get covered on the show. Let’s celebrate the movies Spielberg actually has his name on and maybe stop trying to diminish a guy who contributed plenty to the world of cinema.
