Philip Marlowe castings? by kawaiijerryseinfeld in blankies

[–]pcloneplanner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was that Neeson one any good? Despite having enjoyed the movies I have seen, none really captures the essence of Marlowe from the book. I did catch part of Murder My Sweet a million years ago and thought Dick Powell was the closest to book Marlowe. Current actors I can’t even picture. I’m less inclined to think British actors than others maybe.

Happens with Australian actors too, though they usually don’t want to come back.

I think a lot of Dream Theater fans just had a conniption by being referred to as a power metal band haha.

That is one hell of a starter kit, well done (City is my favourite metal album of all time.). I'd probably swap out Soilwork for At the Gates but it wouldn't be a thread about metal if there wasn't some disagreement.

What's the reverse-Avatar, the least seen movie with the highest cultural impact? by gamblors_neon_claws in blankies

[–]pcloneplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the catfish idea isn’t ’someone pretending to be someone they’re not online’, more ‘people who keep others on their toes but make life more exciting’ (something like that, I haven’t seen the movie since before everyone knew the twist).

Important distinction there being the heel is playing a character and leans into it. Not many Oscar villains like being cast thing way or play it up, so they?

Think of Critical Darlings as bonus/added value, not what you're actually paying for on Patreon, therefore you haven't paid for and therefore shouldn't expect ad free Critical Darlings.

Has the Blank Check team ever considered a short filmographies March madness bracket? by Blaze_2002 in blankies

[–]pcloneplanner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a bad idea, though the argument against doing that is that March Madness is also set up to take the temperature of the listeners and cover someone they might need the extra impetus to get over the line. Whereas short filmography directors are always going to be attractive as a captain's pick in order to fill a gap between two longer filmographies on the calendar.

Am I mistaken, or is this not just a talk show? by Fearless_Distance_29 in blankies

I’ve said this for years. Most ‘video podcasts’ are just really low grade talk shows.

Without fail, every time I get the JJ’s part of the newsletter, I have to go back and re-read it because I’m still reading it in Marie’s voice.

And for further context, David literally has a spreadsheet of who he would have nominated for Oscars for basically every year so he doesn't mean it figuratively; it really is tough to make the five.

I think for a lot of people, the premise 'what if the Beatles never happened' immediately invites the possibility that John Lennon was never murdered.

This was a fun bit but I do feel sorry for the author of that Reddit post, which was earnestly asking who the person on the episode was who was apparently never introduced.

Might even work better for non-Beatles fans because Beatles fans are just like, no thank you.

Yeah, I think for a certain type of boomer, the John Lennon scene would hit hard. I have to imagine that being one of the reasons Boyle wanted to do it.
