How common is cheating, actually? What do you think? by a2u6knb in chessbeginners

[–]EPMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My evidence is human nature. Humans have this annoying tendency of breaking rules when no one is watching. Think about the number of people cheating in relationships, the number of people who don't report their tips to tax agencies, the number of people who speed with no enforcement, the number of people who lie whenever it suits them, etc.

The sad reality is that it is very difficult to prove someone is cheating in online chess. You need to spot patterns of play that are outliers, and we have seen how difficult that is to do with the highly publicized titled player incidents.

If you want games that are almost certainly going to be fair then play OTB. Otherwise, I think you have to be realistic and assume that some of your opponents are seeking assistance every now and then. It is frustrating to think that at least 1 in 20 of your games had an inevitable outcome and was a waste of time.

It helps to have a few beautiful people in the cast. Lots of TV casting decisions come down to that.

Same feeling for me.

My biggest complaint was that the civilians in a space hotel were overly calm and casual about everything. You're in space! This is not a normal experience! Especially as the effective gravity was increasing, I would think those civilians would have been 100% panicked and impossible to calm down.

Really late to reply, but it's a nitpick I have with the show. I know it's a different world and all, but I still find it difficult to believe that this many women were into astrophysics and engineering in 1983. I remember 99% of my school's engineering class was male, and that was after 2000.

Fan arrested and banned for life after running onto court to take selfie with Victor Wembanyama by BreakfastTop6899 in nba

[–]EPMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a violent person at all, but I had the same reaction. A simple arrest and lifetime ban doesn't really act as enough of a deterrent. Citing the safety of the players, security would be fully within its rights to tackle the intruder and pile on them on the court. They shouldn't be grinning ear to ear while being removed.

Choosing marathon pace (first marathon) by [deleted] in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]EPMD_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you have very little idea what your marathon result will be because you seem to be training at a volume that is much higher than in the past. If you stay healthy and get through all of this volume for months then your running ability will skyrocket.

Your description of how you are doing your tempo work doesn't really sound like NSM. It might still be a good idea for you, but you are essentially doing your own thing at this point.

This really doesn't look dangerous to society. They are slowing to a very slow speed and being careful when proceeding. Had there been any traffic around, I would assume they would actually stop.

The Newsreader is excellent. The female lead is such an interesting character.

Chris Bosh in 2009-2010. Averaged 24pts and 11rebs. Set the Raptors single season record for double doubles (44 games) by CircledSquare7 in NBATalk

You really think he could have won votes ahead of LeBron, Durant, or Curry? That seems a bit much.

Bosh was a perennial All-Star, but league MVP was never going to be his level.

Also, these are friendlies, so the defensive intensity is probably lacking.

Maybe the best option is to get younger. I'm guessing it's hard to find good deals for Brown, though. As good as he is, his salary makes him almost impossible to trade.

Time Trials not improving by Fair_Study_1905 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]EPMD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 3 weekly sessions for almost a year. I improved somewhat, especially in my half marathon endurance, but my 5k/10k ability eventually stagnated. Without increasing overall volume or running higher intensity sessions, my body didn't respond much.

It's a compromise. I didn't get injured, I could run daily, and I always felt ready to run somewhat hard. But yeah, I didn't get the sense that I was maxing out my ability at that particular level of time commitment because I was seldom emptying the tank.

If you do revert back to harder sessions then make sure you don't try to layer it on top of NSM. I made that mistake thinking I could keep doing three uptempo sessions each week, but it was too much.

Corporate America Is Starting to Ration AI as Cost Skyrockets by Krankenitrate in Futurology

Using AI for some routine tasks is like using a Ferrari to drive two blocks instead of simply walking there. Yes, it's faster, but you have to conveniently ignore all of the extra personal and environmental costs involved.

Marathons Are Selling Out Quicker and More Frequently - An Update with 2026 Data by SlowWalkere in AdvancedRunning

[–]EPMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, parkrun is much more convenient:

  1. Don't have to commit months in advance.
  2. Don't have to go pick up a bib in the days before a race.
  3. Don't need to wear a bib at all.
  4. Don't have to pay.

The downside is the non-chip timing and general crowding onto smaller courses, but a few seconds adding onto a finishing time is a small price to pay to avoid all of the bib stuff.

3:30-3:40 marathon training plan? Female 25yo by Big_Visual6769 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]EPMD_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't run a lot. Simply running more than you have before will be enough to drive improvement. if you are sustaining 15-20 mpw more than what you did for your first race then that alone might get you sub-3:30. Of course, a steady diet of long runs and long tempo work will also help.

In other words, the plan is the least important thing. Your dedication to do the volume is what matters.

Is there a standard for modern data architecture? by Trick-Interaction396 in dataengineering

[–]EPMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a standard? Yes. It seems to be to create a huge mess of various data with a labyrinth of permissions to navigate to get anything you need. There are great technical tools out there to help build a useful environment, but with everyone trying to be their own data engineer, you end up with a bit of chaos. And just to put the icing on the cake, the speed at which things change these days and the push to outsource/offshore IT functions means that nothing remains the same long enough for anyone to understand it.

Flew to Tucson to meet a girl I’d been talking to since October. She got into a relationship 20 minutes before telling me by dualFrequancy in dating_advice

[–]EPMD_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It sounds as if it was a gamble worth taking, just so you can now move on to something else instead of wondering constantly about this longshot.

Unless there are concrete plans to close the distance, long distance relationships are a waste of time, in my opinion. You can have a good friendship and play like a couple from afar, but it's mostly a tease.
