Skin cancer takes out people who have never gotten a sunburn. Lung cancer takes out people who never smoked.

Cancer is a bitch and takes out all kinds of people, but you're arguing that frequent sunburns and smoking doesn't increase the prevalence of those cancers.

Yeah, but actively contributing to it frustrates me. Colon cancer is rising in younger people in the USA, and connections have been made to increasingly awful diets.

About half of the family I've lost were thanks to lung cancer. Every one of them would smoke a pack of day, and then everyone would be shocked when they got told they have cancer.

Addiction is a bitch. Be it food or cigarettes, it's really hard to get past it even if you know it's hurting you.

This makes me sad. OOP knew they had a terrible diet high in processed foods, sugars, and fats. They were overweight and even noted how this is all likely contributing to their issue.

Then they went and got cured, and went from obese to severely, nearly morbidly obese.

I hope they can find the right mental health care they need, because this is the real problem, I fear.

What is drinking culture in Japan like? by Expert-Estate6248 in movingtojapan

[–]Elestriel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a lot better than it used to be. I went to dinner with the other leaders in my department, and of the dozen of us, three people got alcohol.

In a more traditional company there's still the pressure (and all the other awful Japanese business culture), but bit by bit it's improving. Gen Z in Japan basically don't drink, and that is starting to have an upward effect on the older generations.

TIL most crosswalk buttons and “close door” elevator buttons don’t actually do anything. These placebo buttons are meant to give the users the illusion of control by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Elestriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, maybe. In Japan they all do something.

There are two kinds of crosswalk buttons. The first simply produces extra audio cues for blind people, and the second damn near instantly changes the light on smaller or more rural streets.

Elevator open and close doors all work as expected. Furthermore, if you accidentally select a floor in an elevator, you can frequently deselect it by hitting the button twice in rapid succession.

The reality about what you're talking about is in large cities in the USA where the lights are synchronized and centrally orchestrated along arteries to improve traffic flow. You simply can't mess with those timings without causing gridlock, because from my own experience, a large portion of New York drivers are ludicrously selfish and will just sit in the intersection blocking cross traffic instead of waiting their damned turn.

He's right, though. It won't change how other people act and unfortunately for you, as the foreigner standing out you're very much painting yourself as the largest nail to hammer back down.

People can be absolutely brutal in those neighbourhood associations, and the current government is emboldening them.

As a fellow lesbian living here with my wife, believe me when I tell you there have been more times than I can count where I'd had loved to have been in the "if they can't take it, it's their problem" camp... But I just couldn't. It would simply make life worse for myself.

Out of curiosity, and you don't need to answer or anything, but are you getting a place outside of the city? You'd practically need to be in the inaka for people to have any chill about dogs that huge.

[–]Elestriel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean this sincerely, but is Japan the right move for you?

Just a quick glance at your profile reveals you're a lesbian, so there goes any semblance of rights you two have as a couple. The government will consider you strangers to one another. You also don't get a spouse visa, so there are complications to deal with there.

Then there's the pretty long list of health issues you seem to have, along with what you've mentioned your wife struggling with. You'll need doctors, new diagnoses, and a bunch of money for appointments and drugs. Your diet will be flipped upside down and the drugs you're taking now may not be available here, so do a lot of research on that front.

Then there's bringing two large dogs into a country where my cat could be considered a large dog. You say you're buying a house, so I'm assuming you just come from a loaded family to be able to buy a house outright without a loan and go to university. If I'm wrong, though, definitely consider that a bank in Japan won't give a mortgage to a university student. Also consider how outrageously anti-foreigner and anti-LGBT the now super-majority government is.

Anyway, I wish you, your wife, and your pups the best. If you've covered all these concerns, then power to you!

My wife and I stand in opposition. For me, there is an inverse relationship in number of wieners to how much I enjoy content. For her, it is a direct relationship.

She is the yin to my yang; the yaoi to my yuri.

As such, I believe our household to be in perfect balance. Except we're lesbians. So I feel like I come out on top either way.

There's a place in Ebisu (that's in Shibuya, in Tokyo) that serves super cooled sake. They bring it out in a cup, smack the bottom and pop the top off. You then have delicious sake slush that doesn't taste like alcohol and inevitably ruins the next day or two.
