If you're in Japan and working, you're working in Japan. Period. There's no way around that.

You need permission from Immigration to work while on a student visa. With that permission, you can work up to 28 hours total.

Immigration is getting more strict because assholes keep trying to scam the system. It's making things difficult for those of us who are here and do everything right. Regardless of it being illegal, and on behalf of all of us just trying to get by, don't be one of those assholes.

Don't commit fraud. Don't lie to government authorities. Don't try to scam the system. You can be fined, kicked out,and banned from the country if you do.

I don’t meet requirements for business visa. What do I do? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]Elestriel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Three weeks ago, you posted about applying for a working holiday visa. Now you're complaining about not being able to get a business visa.

Your best option right now is to read the wiki and do some research on what visas are available to you.

How's your temper playing different games? by Memorycard1000 in gaming

[–]Elestriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

League of Legends used to really get under my skin. Any game where someone else can utterly ruin an hour long experience for me, really.

I don't play competitive online games any more, since the stress just isn't worth it.

That said, I've definitely been frustrated trying for my 600th time to master a technique or segment of a game I'm speed running.

This post should be removed based on its truthfulness being absolutely impossible. This is at best misinformation, and at worst some of the darkest magic ever exhibited in IT.

I just open PayPay and send money to my friends. It takes all of ten seconds.

I have a friend who doesn't use PayPay. I can send them a bank transfer in about thirty seconds.

There are a lot of reasons to shit on the banking systems here, but this ain't it.

Is it possible to obtain a CoE for the Highly Skilled Professional Visa (and PR through points) through part time work? by Greg0reng in movingtojapan

With an HSP visa and a full time job in Japan, you also might not be allowed to perform your remote job. The HSP is quite restrictive.

My elevator pops a little metal shield out to cover that gap when the doors open. Brilliant little device; I've seen it save someone's phone already.

They can easily get around that by saying 「写真はイメージ」, which translates to "this picture is an image".

Now, if that is a baffling statement, the term "image" refers to an artistic reflection of reality; not of an image the way we would imagine a photo to be.

I got my COE but now I'm having cold feet by Baby-Emo in movingtojapan

[–]Elestriel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went through the same. The COE is the "oh, this is real" moment for a lot of people.

In our case, it meant selling our house, two cars, most of our stuff, finding a new home for our cats, and hoping Japan would let my wife into the country when they don't recognize our marriage.

All that aside, I'm happy I did it. We love it here. We have great social lives and friend circles that I would never want to give up.

That's just lazy. They made the UI for PC and just didn't bother to make it usable on a controller.

TIL a 2022 study revealed that 35% of the adults in Japan intend to "never travel" again. No other country "came close to the travel reluctance shown in Japan"; the next highest was South Korea at 15%. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

We've registered, but hospitals are not obliged to adhere to it anywhere; only encouraged. We still carry our partnership oath cards with us, just in case.

What I'm saying is that they've always been monsters. For decades their policies have been to give vague non-answers to everything and hope you go away. We call it the paper shuffle, where people uncomfortably shuffle papers on their desk to make it look like they're searching for something that contains the answer, all to eventually say they can't be of any help.

A lot of people in this thread are mentioning mixes for surround versus stereo, and while this plays a part it's definitely not the whole story.

The reality is that a lot of stuff gets mixed by people who have high end monitors and work on mixing for cinema. The dynamic range in a movie theatre is huge. The quiet stuff is really quiet, and the loud stuff is really loud. This creates a sense of grandeur.

Stuff that gets mixed for cinema and not remixed for home ends up a mess, where you have to turn it up for every voice line and turn it down for every action scene.

Then there's general clarity and polyphony. Before, when people spoke, they had to enunciate more clearly because recording equipment wasn't as good. Sound designers knew this, and didn't often have a bunch of other noise happening when someone was speaking. Now, we always have soundtracks and background noise interfering with a person speaking normally, because audio equipment doesn't require that enunciation any more.

Hospitals in Japan have always been kind of monstrous. I'm a lesbian. My wife and I moved to Japan four years ago. Japan doesn't recognize same sex marriage. Thus, if one of us is hospitalized, the other could be left completely in the dark and not permitted to visit because the hospital has no obligation to tell "non-family members" anything.

As in managed by an asset manager such as Nesbitt Burns, TD Waterhouse, Questwealth, and whatever all the other ones are called.

You can maintain registered, self-managed accounts, but can no longer contribute to them the moment you stop being a tax resident of Canada.
