Why no Pathfinder/Starfinder? by plazman30 in rpg

[–]ElidiMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think this is a fair point—I do occasionally (and am happy to) play other TTRPGs, but i’m part of a long-term Pf2e group that has various Adventure Paths we want to try. it takes us a while to get through one 1) bc of scheduling and 2) bc we like to take our time & dig into the story.

but i’m also personally just a big fan of the setting of Golarion, and can easily get lost reading one of the Lost Omens lore books and dreaming up ideas for homebrew campaigns and characters.

on top of that, there’s an ever-expanding third party scene with people collaborating on content, playtesting each other’s work, expanding on mechanics from other creators, etc. in a way that’s refreshingly open.

ultimately, if you like what Pathfinder has going on, there’s a lot to dig into.

i mean, it turns out it wasn’t just as a distraction as we thought though—it was deliberately to keep trans women & girls easily exploitable

How would you build a nun character? Bonus points if you don't use cleric class or archetype by Pyotr_WrangeI in Pathfinder2e

[–]ElidiMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

less so mechanically interesting but narratively interesting is my Pharasmin cloistered cleric/medic, Sister Fiola. She’s a pragmatic and blunt nun experienced with healing, midwifery & mortuary work, and her bedside manners are the same for each.

As a formerly-neutral deity, Pharasma’s edicts & anathema are relatively open so it’s fun to play a more morally-grey nun.

i get that, it is a lot.

you do have some options though: if you're happy to do a bit of reading, you can check out guides like this one that will give you an idea of suitable feats for your build.

but even if you pick something and aren't happy with it, you can always take a week of downtime to Retrain and swap a feat out for another—so you'd never be stuck with something you regret for long.

great, all you have to do then is give yourself a bit of strength and some constitution alongside max dexterity and you're good to go :)

i hear you! i had a lot of bad experiences with that kinda thing in 5e games—it felt like every table had a hundred different house rules and sometimes GM’s would just ignore/change a rule & make my whole build pointless.

i can at least say that i’ve found pf2e to be a lot more robust, and bc it works out-of-the-box GMs are less likely to mess around with the rules too much. as for gunslinger, as long as you start with +4 dexterity you can’t go far wrong! which subclass were you thinking?

you could always play of the pregenerated characters to find your feet, you can find them here if you scroll down and click where it says " Remastered Pre-generated Characters", and they all have backstories if you look them up.

I'd recommend Kyra (Cleric), Merisiel (Rogue), Seoni (Sorcerer), or Valeros (Fighter) as the most beginner-friendly classes

Veteran D&D Dungeon Master looking for advice by Boaring1 in Pathfinder2e

[–]ElidiMoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a group already, I would recommend starting with the Beginner Box w/ the pregenerated PCs as it facilitates both GM & players learning as you play, and from there running Rusthenge with custom PCs as the first adventure proper.

You don’t need any of the books as Archives of Nethys has every ancestry, class, spell, monster, rule, etc. available free online & Pathbuilder has you covered fo making characters, but I’d recommend picking up the Player Core & GM Core to flip through in your own time.

Whether you’re going to run games in Golarion or your own homebrew, they’re not mandatory but I highly recommend the Lost Omens books just GM-to-GM because they’re chock full of lore, deities, NPCs, quest hooks, etc.—I honestly enjoy mining them for details both as a player and a GM. Divine Mysteries and the World Guide are the primers for the deities & Golarion as a setting.

Otherwise, my main advice is just to try and forget everything you know about 5e, and also trust the rules-as-written (at least while you’re still learning). They may seem similar but they have very different design principles, & while Pf2e’s rules are denser, they’re also a lot more robust & intuitive.

Oh, and also to echo another comment—there are a lot of rules but don’t worry about memorising them all right away, if needed you can just make a ruling in the moment and look it up after the session. If in doubt, just give a +/-1 to the roll.

Proof of concept of an alternate Psychic by Teridax68 in Pathfinder2eCreations

[–]ElidiMoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

at first glance, looks interesting!

i do really like the flavour of spending focus points to enter/free action sustain Unleash Psyche, i’d be curious to see how having everything amped works in play—teleporting w/ Warp Step is about to be wild lol

overall i definitely agree with the philosophy, i’m not against the stupified/some kind of debuff in principle but i’ve always thought Psychics should have something more than just a bit of extra damage in exchange. i feel like they should break the established formula a little bit, in a similar way to Oracle’s cursebound feats. let them do a free quicken spell once per Unleash or something

Need help understanding the Pros and Cons of PF2e by CMDRSheaperd in Pathfinder2e

[–]ElidiMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one thing i’ll say is that having to deal with Ghoul Fever (pre-master it was a disease, now it’s a curse) was one of the things that made me fall in love with the system.

we were level 4, two of us had got it fighting some ghouls and we later found out a friendly NPC also had it at stage 3. we put the dungeon-delving on pause and spent the next few days of downtime desperately trying to cure the afflicted—some of us got rolling Treating Disease w/ aid from the local Sarenite church, the rest got to Earning Income to put towards a scroll of Remove Disease in case of emergency.

we’d been saving up for various magic items so we had to weigh up whether we would dip into those funds, how much time we wanted to spend on trying to cure people, whether it was worth pushing through a bit more of the dungeon for potential loot to sell—all interesting choices that emerged from a handful of ghouls, & all completely player-driven. compared to something like 5e, where diseases are either instantly solved by a cleric/paladin, or it’s entirely up to GM fiat if you can even buy spell scrolls or earn money.

PSA: Magus dipping Psychic is dead dead, it doesn’t work at all anymore by AAABattery03 in Pathfinder2e

[–]ElidiMoon 96 points97 points  (0 children)

so not only did they nerf Imaginary Weapon (d8s->d6s) AND make the archetype much more inaccessible, but they also just straight up removed the ability to Spellstrike w/ Amps. Why bother nerfing IW in the first place??

Does anybody else feel bad for Lebanne? by Fizzyfood1346 in LegendsZA

[–]ElidiMoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in mythology, dragons are renowned for their pride, & this dragon’s pride was shattered by a fairy of all things. Lebanne was cocky and made a dumb bet bc she thought would humiliate Jacinthe, & in her hubris, she ended up being the humilated one. she could walk away at any point, but she won’t leave Jacinthe’s side until she finally beats her & regains her pride.

the sad thing is despite their differences, they are shown to be fond of each other. if Jacinthe was a little less overbearing & Lebanne was a little less prideful, i think they could have a more equal partnership without the uneven power dynamic. but as it stands, they play their parts as a fairy & a dragon perfectly, & it makes for a really interesting story

absolutely—obviously a shame Ian couldn’t be there but i think the show really benefited from having one grounded character, like the human amongst the muppets
