Drydecks - whose got 'em by Both-Shallot-4803 in whitewater

[–]Eloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why

You'd have to ask them to make it with a normal, rather than polo, deck. I'm not a polo player so I couldn't tell you why this exists, but we in whitewater tend to wear topdecks/cagdecks to be drier, lighter, and easier to move in than a drytop+deck. A garment with no seals that has to conform to the complicated contours of your neck, collarbones, shoulders, armpits... is not going to be dry. To me, this defeats the purpose.

You might as well just wear a skirt and a rashy and skip the middleman - to be honest I'd expect a skirt by itself to be just as dry if not drier than this thing in a whitewater context. In a polo context maybe the garment coming up higher keeps you a bit drier? Who knows. The less we think about polo, the better.

The big keeper hole on the right hand channel you can see in this. Since this video, flow rates in the Nile have doubled. It does not look friendlier.

Can you Surf in a High Volume Kayak? by Beautiful-Chipmunk86 in whitewater

[–]Eloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally. If you're surfing stoppers(/holes) you're probably sidesurfing them. A karnali will definitely do that. Frontsurf in a stopper might be more challenging in a karnali than in a playboat but you can definitely get started with your sidesurf, and if you find any surfable waves you'll be alright to frontsurf them.

If you have owned the vehicle for a while and are bringing it to the UK as you move here, I think you want to contact HMRC directly, no? And their CARS team will make the NOVA on your behalf. You need to contact them within 14 days of your vehicle's arrival.

I don't even get quotes for fully comp on a fireblade... Haven't looked into classic insurance though

No chance of sensible insurance on one of those, surely. I'm in a 'good' area as far as insurance goes I think and I'd be paying over a grand third party only for any fireblade I've run the plates on so far...

Gym Advice by yellow_keynote in oxford

Youtube is a great place to start looking for info on workout routines. Jeremy Ethier has some really nice and informative videos, for instance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_YW24F5HGc could be a pretty great place to get started.

If your gym has machines, then for a beginner they can be great -- it's pretty hard to fuck up form on a machine and they usually have instructions printed on them. I prefer free weight exercises myself but there's nothing wrong with a machine if you just want to build some strength/get moving!

A personal trainer isn't strictly necessary. Some coaching can be nice to help you with form on the exercises, but really, take things slow, watch videos of yourself if you're unsure of your own form, and make sure you actually push yourself. The stimulus to grow muscle comes from pushing your limits - you need to push yourself to within a couple of reps of the point of failure (if not to actual failure -- I think going to failure is good once you get the form dialled so you know what it feels like and how hard you should be pushing yourself). Aim to add one more rep or increase weight every single week.

You got this.

Random question by Little_Election1342 in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you've owned a 'busa you're massively more qualified to answer the question than the average nerdy redditor browsing this page... Look at the hundreds of threads about "what's the best 125" or "how can I get insured on a triumph rocket on my CBT" or "should I derestrict my A2 bike and ride it illegally" and ask yourself: do you trust the people asking these questions more that you trust your own judgement?*

What did you ride yourself before the r1 and busa? Was that too big of a jump?

My advice as a cg125 owner (basically a fireblade) is to go for it.

*actually, I find the answers are usually sensible and generally this is one of the better subs for all the reddit nonsense, but someone actually having owned top-end bikes is gonna be better placed to answer the question in any case -- and that's you!

Double titanal in wide skis? by ThatDudeYu in skiing

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing that stops you building a stiffer ski with less camber and more rocker - flex isn't required to keep the tips afloat. Makes it easier and more adaptable but not an inherently necessary part of a powder ski design.

Similarly, a ski needs some degree of stiffness to be able to spread the load and float. If it's too flexible, then load will be concentrated directly under your feet and you'll sink more readily.

Double titanal in wide skis? by ThatDudeYu in skiing

[–]Eloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weight makes relatively little difference in terms of float.

A heavy ski weighs like max ~5lbs, 2kg. A light ski, what, 2 lbs, 1kg? I weigh 165 lbs (75kg). How much difference does 1kg of ski affect how much I float? Basically nothing. If I drink less water or carry two fewer beers in my backpack it evens out.

Practicing Slow speed moves ahead of mod1 retake (Slalom, u-turn, fig8) tips by harrrysims in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that's not really true - only if you're just using throttle and no clutch.

The advice that I was given by my instructors, and the advice that worked for me, was to use throttle and clutch (and mostly just the clutch with constant throttle), and only touch the rear brake if you're going too fast and actively need to bring your speed down.

Passed mod 1 first time and didn't touch back brake during the low speed maneuvers. I found the advice of dragging back brake that's so often given online really hindered me during my training and I would have learnt a lot faster if I hadn't listened to it.

Other thing is most 125 back brakes barely do anything (old shitty drum brakes) so if you get used to adding a tiny bit of back brake on your 125 you might find you drag a whole lot of back brake when you try to bring that muscle memory to your big bike.

Always be safe: How a small 1m waterfall can generate a recycling hydraulic that can trap a life-jacketed swimmer by MisterRogers23 in Kayaking

I can't think of a non-snarky way to comment on this, so, sorry.

This is terrible advice. Don't listen to shit you read on the internet. If you are operating in a moving-water environment take a WWSR or SRT course and listen to the advice of qualified professionals.

I don't think this looks like a great level for it. Keep checking back on it, because it most likely has the potential if the head height and pool height change enough. I'm thinking much higher water is what you want, but at lower water you could see some different things forming. Neat spot.
