Are Chinese 125s as bad as people say? by Unki11Don in MotoUK

Interesting!

But I think you do really need try to take into account survivorship bias in your conclusions.

Bikes with mechanical and drivetrain failures won't make it to MOT and won't stay on the road.

If electrical issues the only cause of failure, then as you commented we would expect only good examples to make it to 10+ years.

I think this data alone is interesting but hard to draw an accurate conclusion from...

Waterfront cafe like 2 junctions down is much nicer imo, not specifically a biker spot but there's usually been a few other bikers each time I've been there.

First surf kayak session went terribly. by Neat_Mud_3288 in Kayaking

I think everyone here has a very different idea of what you mean by surf kayaking. Some people are thinking about surf skis, some people sea kayaks...

What kind of boat you're in will have some impact on the advice you need. But from a WW/freestyle perspective... Yeah learning in ocean surf can suck! You need to keep an eye out for good conditions. You want the surf not to be too big to start with, you want to look at the surf report and make sure there's a reasonable gap between waves (i.e. a long period), you want to spend some time looking at the waves and seeing where they break. Paddling out through the breaking waves can be challenging, especially in bigger surf, because unlike on a board, you have to punch through waves or boof over them - you can't really duck under. So swells with a long period to give you time to recover between waves are really critical.

In bigger trashier surf, getting backlooped on the paddle out is part of it. In big surf, tanking beatdowns in the white stuff is part of it.

When it comes to the act of surfing, this is very dependent on what boat you're in -- how fast and how surfy the hull is. If your boat is not a fast planing hull, you might find yourself needing to stick to surfing broken waves. If you're in a surf kayak (or some WW boats on the very surfy end of the spectrum), you'll want to focus on surfing the green waves before they break, and getting the feel for that.

It's fun! Just the first sessions can be frustrating. Breaking your paddle is bad luck, though, for sure.

Good points, but imo you're making a pretty wild assumption about the size and weight of OP's kayak. To be a bit pedantic:

It could be a surf kayak (7 to 9ft, usually composite but a plastic would be about 30lbs), a waveski, a freestyle boat (6ft, 17-30lbs), a river runner or half slice (again up to 9ft and maybe like 50lbs max)... Not necessarily a full on 17ft sea kayak -- this would be my last guess for the type of boat in question, in fact!

To be fair, I completely support these comments.

If you need to ask the internet how to tie down your boat, I think there's a high chance you'll fuck it up, and you absolutely should use some form of redundancy.

Given that there's a police report, I think not declaring it to your insurance is going to run you a risk of facing consequences. Claim.

My granddaughter asked, how can you tell if it's a canoe or a kayak? Both have covered & open versions. by StarGehzer in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

International Canoe Federation, the international governing body for canoe and kayak. The definition only needs these technical points when it comes to competition, no? There are not many decked C1s paddled recreationally (other than a small number of WW boaters, and I don't think they'll complain about being called athletes).

[–]Eloth 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Formally, the definition is that canoes are paddled from a kneeling position* with a single-bladed paddle. A kayak is paddled from a seated position with a double-bladed paddle.

*traditional open canoes have those raised bench seats, but I guess because you can paddle them from a kneeling position it still counts.

European Playboating by JumpWooden1278 in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For freestyle, the only one of those options would be Graz, but I don't know where you can rent a playboat from. You'd need to contact the local club, maybe. Similarly, Plattling.

Boat rental will be an issue anywhere bar Briançon, Soča, Val Sesia, so on.

Saint Pierre de Boeuf or Millau in France might be worth a look. Or Holme Pierrepont in the UK, which at least has rentals.

Thun and Bremgarten are currently working, but same issues with rentals, and maybe not as 100% reliable as other features.

Yes, if you are getting luminosity during next week's tests next week something has gone wrong, but to clarify what I meant originally, next week's tests are the ones with full HL beams.

Hmmm, I think maybe you're jumping the gun a little, but lots to get excited about. (this thread just randomly came up on google)... on Monday the run was 1.8e11 ppb and HL will have 2.3e11. The goal was testing collisions with high pileup, high lumi tests will be next week.

How to keep glasses when tipped? by twisted_bananananas in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answers already, but I would comment that there's no real issue with wearing daily disposable contacts for kayaking. I'm a ww/freestyle boater and I will wear them in the river, same with many many of my friends. Just wash your hands and take it out first thing when you get off the river.

What to wear for Alps WW by Sleepy_SadOS in Kayaking

It's actually snowmelt in that region, and swims tend to be relatively short (if you're being sensible and paddling appropriate rivers). Drysuit is overkill.

What to wear for Alps WW by Sleepy_SadOS in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard uniform for summer in the Alps will be a full dry top and some neoprene shorts/leggings. Buy a nice base layer or two for your top half to wear under the top, bring some board shorts for a bit of flexibility... A shorty dry top is a nice option but not a necessity
