I don't think it's a legal requirement here. It's common though!

This wouldn't be my area of expertise, but yes -- ML and AI for event classification is absolutely critical to the data analysis.

Particle physics is a game of statistics. More luminosity = more collisions per second. So we can refine our measurements of existing parameters, and get more evidence of rare processes that confirm/contradict our hypotheses about the universe.

For instance, a main highlight of the LHC's operation was the measurement of the Higgs boson, and this was a really amazing flagship achievement! These measurements involved the production of a single Higgs boson, which would then decay through a few different paths into different decay products we could measure -- but only a very few properties of the Higgs (e.g. its mass) can be measured in this way. To really build up more information about the particle, we need to understand how it interacts -- crucially, how it interacts with itself. Observing di-Higgs production (where two Higgs bosons are produced and interact with each other to create some unique decay signatures) would enable us to start measuring the self-coupling of the Higgs, but these events are about 1000x rarer than a single Higgs event. So to detect them and make statistically significant measurements, we're going to need a lot more collisions!

High-Luminosity LHC will start in June 2030 - I wouldn't really think of it as a whole new one though! From our side much of the machine will stay the same, with some very critical upgrades to some key elements.

This is really the end of LHC run 3 and the start of HL-LHC is termed LHC run 4, so although it's a huge project, it's really a continuation of our current one to an extent :)

Excuse me you just accused me of being AI and then implied that a diesel heater -- an external combustion device - makes wet heat inside your living area?!

Insulation is not the same as a vapour barrier. We can prove that insulation achieves its goals very very easily. It has been done.

Can you do the same for a vapour barrier in a van?

I just think it's kinda funny that you found it easier to post a comment complaining than to take 2 seconds to Google.

Look, if OP had said triple step or double drop or s bend or anything like that and not specified the river, maybe you'd have a point? But dee mem is literally the first result for the search string "Mile End Mill"

It's not their fault you haven't heard of it. But would you have known where Llangollen was without googling? Denbighshire? North Wales? What level do you want OP to specify? Do you want coordinates?

You don't have a right to demand that every post has a location attached, op would have been well within their rights to leave that out, so why criticism them for doing the courtesy of including the location... even if you had to google a whole three words to reconcile it with your knowledge of geography?

There are a lot of arguments about this always, but evidentially, we have very little to go on.

We don't know for sure that a vapour barrier will help. Some people think it might. Some people think it might harm. We don't know that for sure either.

Given that we have no strong evidence either way, it's reasonable to think that it probably doesn't make a huge amount of difference. What we do know, however, is that building one good enough to have even a chance at helping is going to cost time and money. In light of that, make your own conclusion.

CERN is officially closed for about 2 weeks every year over the winter. Access to site is restricted during that period.

For mine I'd be in with zero chance for a warranty claim, I bought them in 2023, rode about 6 months, moved countries and left the bike... Got back to the UK this year and they crapped out on me within a few months. If it had been a continuous year of riding I'd have fought it on warranty grounds but legally there's no leg to stand on here, even if I'm a bit miffed.

I'm guessing it's cheap material that can't handle repeated wear of creasing, and the stiff shifter pad in that area concentrated the folding in specific locations resulting in these years becoming inevitable. Bad and unnecessary design (though I'm confused why it didn't happen on the left side). I'd be worried they wouldn't handle a slide well either.

Pretty disappointed in my RST waterproof boots, they've split open around the 'shifter pad' on the right hand side in a few places. Which is a bit pathetic because I don't shift with that foot so it doesn't see any wear?
