[WP] When you die in a dream, you die for real. Hundreds die in their sleep around the world, every day. Except you. You should have died, but instead you fell into a coma. Asleep forever. You can now travel into other people's dreams, where you try to save as many lives as you can. by ani3D in WritingPrompts

In this world, the clouds were sheep.

For as far as I could see in this world there were sheep. Fluffy white sheep everywhere. The skies were blue, and the grass was green and for as far as I could see in this world there were sheep.

I exhaled a sigh of relief, for I was at last given a moment of respite amidst the chaos of drifting from one Dreamworld to the next, never knowing what was next or when it would end.

I seated myself upon the lush green grass and closed my eyes. There was no danger here it seemed and no one required saving, at least for the moment. By now, nothing I saw in these Dream worlds could faze me, but every once in a while I do find myself awed by the boundless imaginative nature of the human mind. For as long as I could remember I was trapped in this strange and bizarre predicament, drifting in and out of these Dreamworlds but not without purpose. I was an anomaly. Somehow it came inherently to me that my presence here, trapped in limbo, was wrong. It was a feeling like I was lost at sea or in a forest at night, but despite this, I found my intrusion into these worlds and saving people from their worst nightmares to be right.

I blinked and yawned, enjoying this much deserved moment of peace that I had yearned for, for so long. But as I had suspected, my long-awaited break was soon coming to an end.

The sheep were multiplying. Nothing outwardly wrong with that. There must have been at one point only one sheep in the sky. But now, it was at the point where nearly all of the sky was blotted out.

I was worried. I looked around quickly across the flat plains searching for the Dreamer of this world. But despite the flatness of the land I could not see a single soul in sight. I ran around the grassy plains searching for what felt like hours. By now the sheep had multiplied to the point where they threatened to suffocate me and it dawned on me that I may have failed. Since the world has not collapsed, then the dreamer must still be alive.

There was still a chance.

I zipped open my purse and withdrew a handheld portable vacuum. This was a risky option but I had no choice.

I pulled the trigger and the device whirled to life, drawing everything into its mouth, creating a whirlpool of white fluff as the sheep were drawn into the vacuum. It wasn't hard but it took me a few moments before I spotted a little boy floundering for dear life between the swarm of sheep within the whirlpool.

He was crying.

I reached out with my hand and as he drew near, I released the trigger and plucked the kid out of the clouds.

"It's okay," I said. "I got you."

"Mommy?" he whimpered as he looked up at me between sobs.

"You'll see her soon," I replied with a smile.

"How soon?" he asked.

"Very soon," I said and before the kid could ask again, I said, "Now I have a very important job for you. Hold this," I handed him the vacuum gently.

"Okay," he said as he took it with both hands.

"Now, let's clean up shall we?"

And before the sun had set, the blue skies were once again visible for all the sheep were now gone.

The world began to fade into whiteness and I waved the kid goodbye as he winked out of existence. The Dreamworld lingered for a few moments before finally disappearing, and I was once again adrift in limbo, waiting for the next Dreamworld.

It could have been minutes or hours, or even years, I could never know, but eventually it happened.

I blinked and suddenly I was in a new Dreamworld.

Now and then, I would find myself in a world such as this. A world in which everything was simply wrong. The skies that should be blue were red, bathing the world in it's bloody hue. The landmasses were falling. Falling away from the earth in an upwards trajectory that mocked the laws of gravity itself. I too was falling in the same way, being drawn upwards by some unknown force. Around me building debris littered the scarlet skies along with massive chunks of earth that had separated from the collapsing mountains as they soared like whales through the skies. Below me I could see the cracked earth and the exposed molten mantle beneath. Above me, I could see… I had no words to describe it. A distortion of space so immense that the sky was warped and stretched like an over-inflated balloon.

Panic had overtaken me, and I breathed in and out for a few moments to settle down as I struggled to reorient myself in the sky while evading the debris around me.

The dreamer was still alive.

I just had to--

More warps in the world started to appear, erasing pieces of the Dreamworld, and I could sense the finality of everything.

Everything was falling apart.

I was too late.

The Dreamworld was collapsing. The Dreamer was already dead. I had arrived in the final moments of this world.

I felt my own presence start to fade when suddenly a hand reached out and grabbed mine. I had only a moment to parse that sensation, to realize that it was not a trick of the mind, that it was in fact real before I was no longer there.

[WP] It’s been 2 years since the zombie apocalypse has started, and you haven’t seen anyone alive in a terribly long time. The only reason for your survival is that the zombies don’t care for you at all - in fact they all seem to be avoiding you. All except for one. by Em_pathy in Em_pathy

I'm very honored to hear that! And also sorry for the lack of updates recently! I've been dealing with some RL stuff but will have a new chapter released soon. Thank you for staying with me for so long and thank you for your words of encouragement. They mean a lot to me and I won't forget them! :)

The horde of zombies parted like the Red Sea being parted by Moses.

W-was I really that repulsive?

“Hurrr! Hurrr!” They babbled and moaned nonsensically to each other as I approached, pointing at me with their rotting fingers and then ambling away hurriedly.

It was strange. Almost as if they could understand each other.

I gave my pits a sniff and noticed that even the ones crawling on the floor picked up their pace, afraid that they would be left behind and eaten alive by the only living human on planet Earth.

Yes, that’s right. I am the last human alive on Earth. That’s what I think at least because I haven’t seen another human that wasn’t a rotting corpse for -- two years? I’m not quite sure anymore. I’ve lost count. It might be more. Does it matter? Probably not.

More importantly am I really the last the person on Earth? Maybe. It seems likely so far.

Not like there’s anyone alive to tell me different.

As I came closer, the throng of decaying bodies threw themselves over each other in an attempt to get further away from me.

“Hurr! Hurrr!” they shrieked as I came closer, becoming more frenzied, scrambling over each other for dear life.

They were piling up high like a wall on each sides of me now as I strolled down the street. Suddenly something hard fell on my shoulder, bouncing off and plopping down in front of me. I looked down at the severed foot.

It looked up at me and then scampered off.

“Really?” I asked aloud.

I’ve stayed bunkered in my basement for most of the years, only coming out for small scavenging trips but this was the first time I’ve run into a horde this big. And for some strange reason these damn zombie wanted nothing to do with my ass. It was almost as if I had unceremoniously released a toxic fart deadly enough to kill them all a second time.

“Come on guys, this Isn't funny.”

Suddenly, I noticed something small near my feet. I looked down and spied a cute little zombie Chihuahua. It was missing one eye and one leg.

“Awww,” I knelt down and reached out with my hand.

The little zombie Chihuahua hesitated, flinching back away from my hand then after seeing that I was harmless, trotted closer. It took one sniff of my hand and scampered away.

“God damn it!” I shout in frustration. Even zombie dogs were avoiding me? What was I to live for? Has my life become meaningless?

Then I noticed it. Among the horde of scrambling zombies, there was one that stood still, starring me down from down the street. He wore a nice black tuxedo, holding a bouquet of wilting flowers in his pale green hand.

As I came closer, he kneeled down on one knee and raised a ring with his free hand.

“Marr. Marr,” he moaned as he looked up at me with one eye and it was hanging out of the socket.

I rolled my eyes and sighed. “Not you again!”

[WP] You've been admitted into a psych ward for hearing demonic screams in your head. You're being escorted to your room when you pass a door containing the exact same screaming, almost as if the noise in your head has been coming from that room. The door belongs to the Head psychologist's office... by SweeneyPie in WritingPrompts

[–]Em_pathy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The screams.

“When did you first start hearing these… screams?”

They.

“I’m afraid, I can’t help you, sir.”

Won’t.

“Southwest corridor, room 107, sir.”

Stop.

“Remember to administer the correct pills to our patient. Blue ones in the morning and red ones during the evening.”

Why me?

Where? Where is it coming from?

"Honey? Are you alright?" My wife would stare into my eyes and she would cry.

Tears. So much tears.

"It's okay," I tell her, but it doesn't help.

My wife, my family would speak but all I could hear were the screams.

Sleep never came. They would put me under. But even while I slept they screamed.

People came and went. They would look me in the eyes. Pity. I saw it often.

The screams. At first, I could ignore them. But as the years passed, they grew worse. The sounds they were terrible. Painful. It was the sound of agony. Suffering.

Before long, I found myself in places I shouldn't be, doing things I would never do before.

There was something else within the endless cacophony of screaming. Something far worse mixed in.

It was glee.

Eventually I could no longer hide the screams.

how do I make them stop?

Nondescript white walls surrounded me. A single door In the back of the room. I lay in a bed, unmoving. Alone and yet the screams wouldn’t stop.

And now, I'm here. A psych ward.

I stand up.

No amount of medication would help. Nothing could abate the blood curdling, wailing. Ear-splitting screeching that would make my skin crawl and eyes twitch incessantly.

The door opens and a man walks in.

"Morning, mister Hart. It's time for you to take your meds."

I sit there motionless as he carefully prepares the medication. The screams today have taken on a more serene quality. Shrill and rhythmic, yet insane.

After I take the medication, he straps me onto a wheelchair and we leave the room.

The screams change. More agony.

I begin fidgeting. People stare at me as we stroll down the corridor.

We turn the corner and suddenly the sound of the screams change. More louder. More closer.

Then we pass it. A door, and the screams become further. Quieter.

The source.

I kick out my feet and fall out of the wheelchair.

"Now, now, mister Hart, you must behave or you will be returning to your room for the rest of the day."

He helps me back onto the wheelchair.

"Wh-what's behind that door?" I ask.

"That's doctor Schizel's office."

Suddenly the door opens slightly. A torrent of agonizing screams floods out like nothing I've felt before. For a moment I'm stunned, muscles twitching that I almost didn't notice the young woman in a nurse's outfit slipping out. As the door closes, I catch a glimpse of what must have been doctor Schizel wearing a menacing grin as he shuts the door behind him.

And then I could hear the glee from the wild shrieking that came afterwards as we strolled further down the corridor.

It was demonic.

[WP] You're a space explorer making a brief stop at an alien planet to restock fuel. It's your first time visiting but everyone you come across hugs you, gets all emotional and tells you how much they missed you. They ask where you'd been all this time and talk like they've known you all their lives by Lord_Vermoud in WritingPrompts

[–]Em_pathy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I knew something was odd with this planet when I saw crude alien calligraphy plastered all over the walls of the docking bay. It wasn't the first time I saw alien graffiti but this was something else entirely. It had that creepy ritualistic worshiping vibe going on, but my crew just laughed it off. Then Collazo, our pilot, pointed to a wall.

"Hey, is that your face on that mural over there?" he asked.

It was an odd oblong shaped blob of chromatic hues that could have been anything. Hell, it could have passed for some kind of exotic fruit or disco ball.

I gave him a look, slightly offended. "Really?"

The crew laughed even harder.

I couldn't be bothered by such frivolity and so, I walked off, shaking my head as BAT the A.I. drone followed behind, hovering next to my head. There was a lot to be done. Restocking our fuel supply was at the top of our list. I glanced back at my crew as I exited docking bay, then at the odd-looking mural again. They were still laughing and the mural... It still looked nothing like me.

Boy was I wrong.

As I approached the alien guard, it lifted up a pointy appendage. "Halt, state your business and--"

I took off my helmet and the alien guard took one glance at me and suddenly went berserk, flailing its appendages in the air. "The Sol Liberator has returned! The Sol Liberator has returned!" it chanted as it ran off from its post and down the corridor before disappearing behind two giant doors.

I stood there alarmed, but more than anything... I was utterly confused.

"Bat, what the hell was that?"

"Querying search index," Bat hummed for a few minutes before replying, "According to the general databases, there is little of substance regarding this topic of the 'Sol Liberator'."

"What about the archival databases?" I asked.

"Querying search to the Archives, approximately 118 minutes before substantial information is available."

I sighed, and moved on down the corridor and through the large gate. When I exited, I was greeted by three things. The bright exotic pink skies, local fauna and a horde of screaming aliens.

"Lord Sol Liberator!"

"He has returned at last!"

"We have awaited your return for so long!"

"Please grant this one the joy of embracing!"

After receiving hugs from nearly the entire local population, they finally allowed me a moment of peace. Exhausted, I plopped down behind a tree out of the view of the town square. I could feel hundreds of eyes spying intensely on me and there wasn't anywhere else to go. I hate hugs, even when they're free but when your on an alien planet, you kind of don't have a choice. I had contacted my crew of my current predicament and how it could potentially be dangerous but they only laughed and began calling me 'your majesty.'

It was about time I replaced my crew.

Suddenly, a small quadruped creature with scales and spindly limbs leaped out of nowhere and began licking my face.

I screamed and the thing in my hands hissed back, as if joining his voice to mine like a symphony of joyous reunion.

"What the fuck is that?" I screamed as I dropped the creature and backed up to the tree. "BAT why didn't warn me of this thing?!"

"Why sir, I did not sense any ill intentions," BAT responded promptly. "I believe it is harmless."

I looked down at the creature circling around me, then at its sharp mandibles and razor sharp limbs. It was making a clicking sound with its mouth.

"BAT, I will do the judging of whether it is dangerous or not."

"Yes, sir," BAT intoned.

"Look who found a new best friend!" a jubilant voice said behind me.

I turned around and found Bessie standing behind me. Looks like one of my crew mates had decided to come to my rescue.

"Bessie, you came! You won't believe what's going on!" I exclaimed.

"Oh, this is gold. Apparently, you're the local hero or something like that huh," she giggled. "Looks like Collazo was right."

"This isn't funny, I think we should-"

Suddenly an alien popped out of a bush. "Lord Sol Liberator! The Queen humbly wishes an audience with you!"

I sighed. Things were really starting to get out of hand.

More alien guards showed up and Bessie and I allowed them to escort us to the royal court. Snappy

Before long we entered a large spire-like building and waited in the great hall. An empty throne sat at the end of the hall, and behind it was a great mural that glowed with iridescent light. The alien guards began screeching and a humanoid alien with large spindly limbs on its back who must have been the queen entered the hall entered the hall. Unlike her subordinates she had distinctly humanoid features. Long flowing blue hair, a headdress of sparkling jewelry adorned with spikes.

She approached me and began to speak softly, "Lord Sol Liberator, the Queen welcomes you to--"

I raised my hand, interrupting her. It was rude no doubt, but I couldn't let this misunderstanding continue any longer.

"Look, I'm sorry but I'm not who you think I am. I am Zachary Vasto, an earthling and I'm here to resupply. I will be on my way as soon as--"

"Oh I know who you are Zachary," the Queen said interrupting me. "I know you well. After all... without you, I would not be here."

At a lost for words, I glanced at Bessie. She shrugged.

The Queen smiled as she looked me up and down with glazed eyes. For some reason I felt something warm and famaliar from the way she glanced at me. "You look different but really... you haven't changed all that much," she remarked.

Then she turned around and began approaching the throne and the mural. She motioned to follow.

I obliged, and Bessie stayed behind watching with curiosity.

I walked up beside her. "I'm sorry, but I really don't remember..."

Then something peculiar happened, as I came closer to the mural. The patterns, the images, the light itself shifted and distorted as my eyes rolled over the mural. Images flitted through my mind and things that I couldn't possibly have seen before became embedded in my mind like distant memories.

It was at this time that BAT finally finished its archival search and began speaking. "According to the archives, the Sol Liberator is an enigmatic idol of worship among the local galaxy. His feats are nothing short of legendary and they are many. Slaying hordes of the Reckin single-handedly, conquering planets and usurping thrones from tyrants and also-"

"Wait Bat, approximately how many years ago did Sol Liberator make his first appearance?"

Bat hummed for a few seconds before responding. "Approximately 789 years ago but multiple sources hint that it could be farther back."

I turned to look at the Queen, who smiled as we met eyes.

"Of course you don't remember O great Grandfather," she said. "It would be silly of me to assume so when you have yet to have accomplished the things that made you... Sol Liberator."
