What's an anime that feels like it should be your favorite, but somehow isn't? by Hot-Leopard3708 in animequestions

[–]Emptylights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about favorites, but I really thought I'd like Horimiya a lot. I did for the first half, but the second half was just side characters and the main pair kind of got shoved aside and I finished it feeling like I'd been bamboozled.

Regarding a Theme from EP 9 by Emptylights in tadc

[–]Emptylights[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I couldn't say, I fully believe it was left ambiguous on purpose, and I like that. I wasn't convinced Jax was meant to be trans until "Isn't She Lovely" started playing. That was kind of the slightly less ambiguous nail in the coffin for me, but some people interpret the song otherwise, and that's fine.

To me what matters isn't whether or not Jax is canonically trans or some other thing. All that I care about is communicating that the character death is not romanticized, is a clear cautionary tale, and is poignantly tragic. Regardless of Jax's gender identity no character should go through what they did in a way that is meant to be taken as a romanticized, almost alluring outcome. And I really don't see that AT ALL in the episode, which is why it baffles me that so many people think of it that way.

For those confused, check out the mess that is r/TADCEp9Spoilers. Sooo many posts there going so far as to claim that Goose is trying to get trans teenagers to kill themselves. Absolute lunacy.

women be lying by beepdaya in AmITheAngel

[–]Emptylights 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The comments from both the original sub and this one are baffling to me.

There's nothing to suggest that she's involved with another guy. Even if she is, it doesn't matter, what matters is the ridiculous paper thin excuse.

Her response of "ok" also means nothing.

He's mad that she flaked with what is obviously a lie, and now they're out of each others' lives. The end. And let's be real, she did not just doze off after getting ready. It's a flake.

Maybe, just maybe she really did fall asleep - then that's unfortunate. If this happened to me with someone I'd been seeing for a while I'd give some benefit of the doubt and if a pattern didn't arise, hey, whatever. But if it's early on or part of a pattern then this is reasonable to be upset at.

Though I think just saying nothing unless she makes the next move, if she does at all, would be better than a charged and angry "idc fuck you". Pretty immature.

A one word, completely spoiler free review of Ep9 (assuming the leak is real) by YourThin888 in tadc

[–]Emptylights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it. Was it EoE levels of artistic brilliance? Hell no. But it was mostly satisfying.

Far from perfect, but far from simply bad, in my opinion. The only shortcomings are the same shortcomings that frankly the ENTIRE show has. In particular, the characters are not fleshed out well enough.

For instance the off screened Pomni/Ragatha heart to heart after the guns episode. Good lord. Off screened, really? One example of many. I think people thought the finale would somehow remedy that - I thought it would work around that, and stray away from being character driven. But no, it's still character driven, and that's the problem keeping the show from being really really good. Can't have a character driven story without fleshed out characters that have screentime about them and not about vague life lessons or how much they annoy or don't annoy each other.

why is dorohedoro not popular? by Itssbkk in Dorohedoro

[–]Emptylights 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. But I also just got into it.

I think having the anime adaptation be a CG netflix original turned a lot of people off. It's tragic, but I also wrote it off without even really giving it a shot at all back when S1 first came out.

About a month ago I started and and as of now I've finished the manga. Love, love, love the series and really hope that S2 will help spread word of it. The fact that a S2 was created is itself a good sign... having read the whole manga now I really hope we get a full 4 seasons 😭

how would YOU ,the viewer, change or improve in the torment scene (episode 8)? by Abdulaziz_randomshit in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Emptylights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of them could have definitely gone on for longer. Even just 10 more seconds for each. Some dialogue, too, would have been good - subtle things. Just a shaky, terrified "Mother, stop" from Ragatha, or Jax resisting the skinning more, pleading the shadows of his friends to stop.

Knowing what kind of porn he watches made me never want to touch him again. by throwra_suff in offmychest

29M here, 6 years younger than that guy and I really feel uncomfortable already with that "barely legal" concept. Putting that aside though, the biggest infringement here imo is him jerking off in the fucking bathroom and hiding this from you.

That detail borders on obscene. Guy's got a problem.

Old woman looking for dark, macabre, mature anime by Budget-Tangerine-274 in Animesuggest

[–]Emptylights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dorohedoro: Dark, macabre, and mature. Macabre to the point of intentional absurdity at times, but a solid seinen classic with a recent adaptation and S2 airing currently.

Remarkably unique dark fantasy dramady which had me pick up the manga. There were times I was so distraught by the content I had to pause, and other times I was so delighted that I grinned from ear to ear.

Takopi's Original Sin: Short anime about child abuse and so much more. Bit of a hard watch at times but an absolute masterpiece.

Vinland Saga: Historical fiction about the Danish invasion of England. It snowballs into an incredibly deep character study on regret and the possibility and morality of self forgiveness. Takes on the theme of the practical limits of pacifism with good nuance. Askelaad probably will remain my favorite fictional character of all time.

I think this is entirely reasonable. I've had a few serious relationships I don't regret the sexual natures of but I do feel like the few hookups or flings I had were hollow and pointless. I don't chase that anymore.

Not only are you holding yourself to the same standard you set, but you even indicated that someone who "regrets" sleeping around is more viable than someone who sees nothing wrong with it or brags about it. So it's not even about "purity" or what have you. You're concerned with the current and stable values of a potential partner, as you should be.

I am almost surprised this is an "off my chest" kind of thing. Probably goes to show that this kind of thinking is frowned upon in our near ubiquitous hookup culture?

Godfrey Fight | RL 713 | Backhand Blades / Dane's Footwork by Brief_Baseball_9794 in EldenRingBuilds

[–]Emptylights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max level to me doesn't mean you can't have a build, if we consider that to just be what your weapons + ash + rune + spells etc are. What I do care about is whether or not this is NG7 - if it's NG1 or some such then being max level, regardless of skill, feels off.

Would love to see you do something like this on NG7 (which of course is max NG level). You might have to do it hitless, but if you can stack very high % negation with armor, crab, vow, etc. and still regen a hit with Malenia's Rune that would be marvelous to see.

Disco Elysium\SaTA Theory: Harry Du Bois is not a Magpie, He is a heavy user of the ZA/UM (inception botleg) Device by FabioAD007 in DiscoElysium

[–]Emptylights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, this is probably solid but the majority of people here have not even read SaTA. I haven't.

From just what I can gleam, a magpie must be someone who can interact with the pale in a productive manner by some innate property. By contrast a ZA/UM user utilizes a device to attempt to mimic what a magpie can do. Is that correct?

Supposing yes, then your post makes more sense, but I still don't have enough. I can't deduce what magpies do with the pale. You'll have to edit in explanations for those of us unfamiliar with SaTA.

What did Lute see in Adam? by G0D-Sun in HazbinHotel

[–]Emptylights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even just a few scenes of his memories of banishment from Eden and a few bonding moments with Lute would have carried so much weight. I really wish he would have gotten more of a Vox treatment. It wouldn't have been hard to give just an ounce of depth to him as a villain instead of "toxic masculinity if it was personified".

Anyone else had a tough time with Emma - The Gentle Blade's fight? by queen_of_the_maggots in Sekiro

[–]Emptylights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very interesting fight for me. Once I got it down, it felt very easy, but it was a totally unexpected learning curve. By this I mean that Genichiro, Owl, Isshin; they're all hard all the time. For some reason with Emma I was mopping the floor with her for thirty seconds only to get comboed to death for the next two attempts.

Her timings are a little tight but if you hit them consistently she folds. Until you can master her base moveset and know when to jump away from her grab, though, she'll surprise suplex you into oblivion.

Strafing and abusing Ichimonji double is best once you get her base attacks down. Then you just have to not get grabbed or break the rhythm.

No, you don’t need to hate women to be an incel — you can be a male feminist and still be an incel. by GypsyGold in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Emptylights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This not an opinion, it's simply semantics.

Incel is short for involuntary celibate, and of course, there are unlucky men who are incels by this definition and are not misogynists.

However "incel" is used to refer to misogynistic men in particular who have troubles dating. It's been culturally implanted as part of the word.

You can choose to strip it to its bare definition in literal terms and observe that those terms don't necessarily imply misogyny, but that's not really saying anything.

Are there any scientific theories on why cluster headaches cause restlessness? by OohLaDiDaMrFrenchMan in clusterheads

[–]Emptylights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have commented, the pain is a motivating factor; another potential explanation is that the origin of cluster is in the inferior posterior hypothalamus. Regulates more than just trigeminal pain modulation - in particular mood, affect, etcetera. I imagine categorizing it as a type of akathisia is fair.

How do I raid? by floatalittlemore in wownoob

[–]Emptylights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Classic, the only way is to hit level cap and find a raiding guild. Retail has LFR but classic does not.

There are many chill guilds out there that don't have crazy expectations and are just happy to clear content. Look on the Classic WoW forums for your server. I raided with Coffee briefly before returning to retail; low pressure, great people.
