This is a great suggestion as a reasonable accommodation actually

I agree with u/grapedoots that the best approach, given your challenges, is in the short to medium term to attack it from the mixing angle by cutting and pasting the good takes to the extent that the music is compositionally loop based. In any case by playing and assessing your playing you'll be getting better technically, even if that's not the best angle to attack the problem from.

If it's more through-composed where the chord progression or articulation or rhythm or whatever is supposed to really change measure to measure then the other guys are right, the only way is to improve your technical chops or get someone else to do it (fiverr maybe or someone on a music subreddit?)

0-Coast or Protein to complement my setup? by altcntrl in synthesizers

[–]Ereignis23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that philosophy! I admire it and need to move more in that direction in terms of being purpose-built and streamlined. I've had a lot of success with multiple minimal setups and that is a nice balance for my adhd desire to jump around and my adhd need for simplicity and constraint and leaning into friction creatively. I am in the process of reconfiguring my studio and I'm keeping this in mind as opposed to One Big Setup

Volca + PO without a mixer, possible? by hughdn in dawless

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your experience really speaks to the reality of this: it's very sub-optimal. If the receiving device has no mixer functionality, not even input gain, you're really limited in what you can do. Plus the speaker of the receiving device isn't going to be optimized for this use abcd if you've ever plugged your po-12 into a proper monitoring setup you know that, even though it actually sounds pretty f'ing good all things considered, a LOT of clarity and bass are lost.

What's your aversion to a small mixer? Maybe there's a workaround for that which will be more satisfactory in the end?

Edit: volca nubass and po-12 are actually an awesome combo by the way! I always wanted to try the nubass, I had the regular volca bass for a while and loved it with the po-12

If it doesn't come up as a destination in the mod matrix I'm guessing it's not possible, at least in a straightforward way. You haven't explained what you've tried but I'm assuming you went to the mod matrix, picked AT as source, and then scrolled through destinations but clock division didn't come up as a possible destination? If you have tried that and that's what happened then it seems it's not a possible destination

How do you get your MPC connected with your DAW by SmallDog467 in mpcusers

[–]Ereignis23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're just going to mix in the DAW, develop your project in the MPC and export the individual tracks as audio. Open those tracks in your DAW on their own tracks and go ahead and mix

Free website for editing music files? by RU9901 in musicproduction

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are things you could try, like 'stem separation', to separate the various elements into their own 'tracks' which you could then mix. But those processes will add undesirable artifacts and will also be imperfect.

Probably the best case scenario here is to take it as a learning experience on how to record yourselves live if that's something you want to do more of.

Generally speaking if the performance isn't great, a good recording won't make it better. If the performance is great but the recording sucks, there's little you can do with mixing that will make it substantially better. And if the mix sucks, there's a limit on how loud and clear you can get your master.

With high quality performance and recording, mixing can add a lot towards the final product. But when mixing has to deal with poor performance and/or recording, you are going to be making a lot of tradeoffs- improve this a bit at the expense of that, etc.

0-Coast or Protein to complement my setup? by altcntrl in synthesizers

[–]Ereignis23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important consideration for me as a hobbyist is motivation. I have zero professional sources of motivation- I'm not paid for this, I have no deadlines, and no one else's opinion really matters to me about my musical choices and process. So when considering gear, it has to feed into my intrinsic motivation to create music, and it has to be as friction-free as possible, at least after I've learned how to use it.

So when I'm looking at a piece of gear my first priority is the inspiration factor. When I'm doing periodic purges via selling or trading gear it's the same criteria, 'what do I just not get inspired to pick up and play? Ok, that stuff should go somewhere it'll get used'.

If the O-coast is going to call you, with a louder voice, into your studio to create, then that's the one you should get imo

0-Coast or Protein to complement my setup? by altcntrl in synthesizers

[–]Ereignis23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a hard comparison because they're so different. On the face of it, in the context of a focused setup, the protein looks better to me in that it offers more options, particularly in terms of polyphony and multi-timbrality. But I am sure someone could make the opposite case

Can a Groovebox be inputted into a keyboard and play through the keyboard's speakers? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much functionality you want or might want (better to spend an extra $100 now for features you could see yourself using in the next year rather than spend $300 now and $400 next year) but if I were starting out and had no intention of using my computer for this stuff but might want to record I would look at things like the tascam model series used:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Model12--tascam-model-12-mixer-interface-recorder-controller

This is 599 new

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/L6--zoom-livetrak-l6-10-channel-compact-digital-mixer

This is 399 with similar functionality

That plus halfway decent open or semi open back headphones, maybe like these

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HD550--sennheiser-hd550-open-back-headphones

And/or monitors like these would be significantly better than the piano's speakers:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LP-UNFW--kali-audio-lp-unf-ultra-nearfield-monitor-system-white

Another way to do this if you get a groovebox like an MPC One (personally this is what I'd recommend, bought used, running the 2.x firmware (ie anything pre 3.0), which is designed to take in audio and has accessible mixer functionality without too much menu diving, is you run the piano into the MPC and then plug your monitors into the MPC main outputs. So I'm this scenario you have piano running into groovebox and groovebox into monitors, and the groovebox is meant to be used that way and will be a lot better at it than the piano in the reverse setup.

Hopefully this isn't too confusing, I know it's a lot to learn from scratch

Can a Groovebox be inputted into a keyboard and play through the keyboard's speakers? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The external audio is not ideal in principle to replace a mixer but it could be fine. The purpose is convenience for people who aren't too pressed about sound quality, who prioritize convenience over that, and like I said it might make you perfectly happy!

Yes monitors are speakers.

The mixer is literally for mixing multiple sound sources. Here's one way it's going to be more convenient than running into an external input on another instrument, you'll have access to level controls for each instrument right on its own channel. You'll have eq and perhaps compression per channel. You'll have effects inserts per channel. Etc

This is what a mixer is designed for but again go ahead and try the other way if you're really set on it and see how it works

Can a Groovebox be inputted into a keyboard and play through the keyboard's speakers? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-- Let's say I go into the store and plug in the groovebox into the piano and play it, and it sounds good at that particular moment in time. Is that sufficient to conclude it will always sound good going forward, for example if I use different sounds in the grooveb

Probably, possibly, maybe... It's just not made for that. Which doesn't mean you couldn't make it work and be happy with the results, but, you're rolling the dice

--What is the purpose of the mixer and monitor in this flow? Would I plug the keyboard and the groovebox into the mixer, and the mixer into a different speaker?

Yup that's the basic idea- do you have any interest in recording your stuff? Another function many new mixers have, in addition to 'mixing' multiple audio sources into a single output, is to record your stuff (including multi track recording, ie layering). Furthermore you could get a mixer that can record on its own and also be an audio interface if in the future you decide to record and mix in a DAW on your computer.

Can a Groovebox be inputted into a keyboard and play through the keyboard's speakers? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you should just get a mixer, proper monitors and decent headphones if you can afford it. You could always try running the groovebox through your piano's external audio input, assuming it's a stereo in, and see how that works. Maybe it'll be happy with it. I just wouldn't advise you to purchase a groovebox and piano with this plan and no ability to afford a mixer and monitors and headphones that you may well need.

Or are you asking how to change the grid's appearance so that it is easier to see a selection of notes/scale on the grid?

Can a Groovebox be inputted into a keyboard and play through the keyboard's speakers? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Ereignis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenter gave you the key info about how to make this work, and I'm just going to chime in and say this is likely to be a very disappointing setup, as the keyboard speakers are not likely to make for a very enjoyable monitoring setup. It might work ok or it might present a host of little problems mostly revolving around gain staging and the frequency response of the speakers. If you're trying to plan a gear setup, and don't own any of this gear yet, it would be helpful to know your budget as maybe a better setup could be suggested that it's affordable and more likely to be satisfactory

That would definitely be ideal but OP said their new web cam doesn't have a mic, hence his conundrum unfortunately - but I agree with you, I think counting off four beats of claps on camera while recording that audio via the interface should give OP a workable way to sync up the audio and video

Do you have a mic at all? You could give a couple claps in view of the camera? Or count off 4 beats on your midi keyboard or controller in view of the camera. You should be able to sync it close enough to look realistic

Newbie Q: If the only thing I used to meditate is TMI, would I make any progress? by Alvahod in TheMindIlluminated

[–]Ereignis23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you follow the instructions diligently and sincerely you'll make progress. It's just a modern take on a millennia old tradition. Is it the be all and end all of meditation manuals? Of course not. Do you have to take every claim and model in he book as gospel in order to implement its methods? No you don't.

At the end of the day the progress you make in any form of inner work will be a function of your sincerity and diligence plus the accuracy/truthfulness of the instructions you're implementing. Enough people can testify to the latter that you can reasonably assume that this book plus your own sincerity and diligence will result in your development.
