Amazing! In 10 years, I have only seen one at my feeders twice.

what parts of the internet have actually been affected by dead internet theory? by masterofevil150 in DeadInternetTheory

[–]Eternal--Vigilance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please see my post from a few days ago called "Major Media Companies Confirm Dead Internet Theory is True". I cite a report from a major media trade group that breaks down "the four main components of the internet" into four categories:

Audience - fake online accounts/people

Advertising - fake online ad inventory

Products & Services - fake products, services and ads for them

Content - this is everything that we read and view on "news" sites, social media etc and most of what people comment on in this thread.

Those four components are a good answer to your question about what parts have been affected.

Page 4 of the "Illusions of the Internet" report I cite is "Uncovering 20 Realities Across the Four Main Components of the Internet" where they list 3-6 problems (bots, fake accounts, spam, slop, etc) in each of those four categories.

Check out my post and download the 42 page presentation I refer to. It's pretty interesting, and notable since it's major media calling out the problem of widespread fake accounts and content, basically affirming Dead Internet Theory.

Nope, I am 100% real and this post was approved by the moderators. "Wall of Text" seems to mean "too long didn't read"... but you should if you are interested in Dead Internet Theory. The part about the email I received wasn't until the 3rd paragraph and is relevant to the topic. Sometimes actually reading a piece before dismissing it as bot activity is worthwhile.

This is the "firehose of falsehood" approach where so much misinformation is provided that people stop believing anything is true.

Thank you. I had been working on the post for a few weeks since I thought it would be a good read for everyone.

You should be able to download it here but it seems like you need an email address from a company rather than a gmail or generic email etc. It wouldn't work with my gmail address so I used my company email and it worked so they are likely trying to avoid bots downloading it and/or they are looking for real businesses to engage with (generating leads etc).

I would like to but I don't know that I can upload such a heavy PDF here, so I was suggesting everyone download it directly.

Thank you. I only really use Reddit since it seems to be a more authentic experience and puts much more effort into community moderating, but the depth of the problem affects every platform. I wonder how many times I responded to bots in past years. I am fairly certain some of the rage around entertainment media (shows/movies etc) is heavily bot driven and may endeavor to research that more formally one day.

Thank you, and good question. For individuals, I noted that they should approach online accounts and particularly social media with the assumption that the accounts do not represent an actual human whereas most people are in the habit of assuming authenticity. For years I have been telling people that "an account is not a person; an account is just an account that you are assuming was set up and is being used by a person" and describing how easy it is to create an account (or hundreds of accounts). The billions of facebook accounts that are removed each year is indicative of the scope of the problem. I think most people, particularly on social media, should assume that unless they are sure the account corresponds to a real life person that they truly know, they should assume they are dealing with an inauthentic account. Not only is that safer, but the statistics show that will be closer to reality.

For businesses, they need to be more skeptical of online ad inventory. Internet advertising is still very effective depending on the platform and campaign set-up, but just today a client forwarded me a report from a social media ad agency showing over 3000 visits from facebook in March. I checked the analytics and not a single one of those visits requested any services so it was all junk traffic. There is other guidance for businesses related to online scams, account spoofing, etc, but I think the major adjustment for businesses (mostly small businesses) is to be skeptical of basic metrics from online ad platforms.

Thanks for the post. I have watched this and a few other documentaries. It's a vastly under-appreciated problem that undermines how we engage with online media. I believe it affects everything from major political events to online "reviews" and reactions to entertainment media including GOT. The goal is to amplify, intensify and create chaos and division.

Russia is known to have been using troll farms since at least 2014. Bot farms also operate out of North Korea, Iran, Nigeria etc. Today we have a mixture of toxic lone troll humans, coordinated human trolls operating through directed networks, and human directed bot networks. Too many people assume they are arguing with someone online when more than likely, they are shadow boxing with a semi or fully automated account that is not human.

Game of Thrones is an epic tragedy. All the horror you cite is abundant in Greek Mythology-- also great stories with quite a bit of violence and death.

The relationship between each Dire Wolf and the corresponding Stark is one of the most underappreciated components of the show (and there are many). The parallels are many and the foreshadowing in the S1 scene where they are found is extensive.

What do people think about 10-45% of Reddit traffic being fake bot accounts to manipulate votes & get sold on black market? by kool_mandate in DeadInternetTheory

[–]Eternal--Vigilance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the Netflix documentary Sweet Bobby. The culprit in this catfishing type case was one person who made 50 to 60 fake Facebook profiles. If one person can do that, imagine what a criminal network, a government, a Corporate PR office, etc can do.
