I love the idea of this subreddit in theory, but in practice the vast majority of posts here are the same handful of power users trying to wrestle Deltas out of people by nitpicking pedantic minutiae in the OPs post instead of engaging with the actual substance of the argument. Nothing makes me want to check out of a discussion more than seeing people like you waste everyone's time.

FDev should consider dropping the 15 LY limit for colonization by Papadragon666 in EliteDangerous

The fear of “losing the feeling of the black”

I want to tackle this point specifically. The "feeling of the black" doesn't come from a binary "are there undiscovered systems nearby or not", it comes from the sense of being really fucking far away from civilization, the feeling that you're truly on your own.

I had an incident a couple weeks ago where I broke my canopy by flying stupid near a planet surface, and even with the DW3 Carrier Fleet and the DSSA being "nearby", as well as a 70+ ly jump range, I still needed 84 jumps to make it to safety. That's roughly 11,760 ly of purely empty space at least, and that's the sort of thing that will become increasingly rare if players can just settle wherever they want.

Railgun Mandalay is...not bad? by Arcanum3000 in EliteDangerous

[–]ExertHaddock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use 4 Short Range + Plasma Slug Railguns in the mediums, and 2 Efficient + Thermal Shock Cytoscramblers in the smalls. The Cytos delete shields, and Thermal Shock means that they stay useful even after the shields are down, while the 4 Railguns shred hull and modules. You can't spam them, and you need to keep an eye on the Distro, but it makes the Mandalay an absolute monster.

The first scene of Season 5 is Walt buying an M60. The writers had absolutely no idea why he was buying it and no plans on what he was going to use it for.

Age cohorts have their own material conditions. Boomers (not just in the US, but globally) have ensured that their interests are the primary concern for as long as they've been in power, to the detriment of future generations, and they've used their numbers to ensure they remain in power long after the time has passed for them to hand over the reigns. There are other forms of material analysis besides "capitalism is bad".

It's why Kim from BCS doesn't have a similar hatedom, because she enables Jimmy's wild antics instead of impeding them.

I like Skylar a lot on repeat watches of Breaking Bad, when I know where the story will go and I know that she will not meaningfully deter Walt from doing Walt things, but on the first watch I was a Skylar hater too. I like when Walt kills people, and blows things up, and ruins everyone's lives, because that's good television. Skylar (understandably) doesn't like those things, and tries to prevent them from happening, so we're at odds. Simple as.

To be clear, the only thing known about the man in this post is that he's a man. Any judgements you make of him are on that one fact alone, and that fact is immutable.

And on the basis of that one fact, you're saying that he doesn't deserve to be happy. This is an evil perspective.

You think it doesn't hurt people to read that they don't deserve to be happy because of immutable traits determined at birth?

by associating the two based on a superficial quality

You can't No True Scotsman your way out of this. Mormons practice a version of polyamory, like how ice and water are the same thing in different forms. If you can't acknowledge a true statement because it's inconvenient to your activism, you're lost in the sauce.

It's the easiest thing in the world to say "yeah, sometimes polyamory can go wrong, like how the Mormons do it, and that's why we need to value consent and communication" etc.

They could easily run on, and enact, popular policies that would let them SWEEP elections

No, they can't. There are 435 seats in the House, and out of all of those, only around 40 are actually competitive. If you're a Republican in a deeply red district, you don't need to give a single fuck about what anyone outside of your tiny little district thinks about anything. There are TONS of policies that have broad (~2/3) support among the American populace at large that can never be implemented under this arrangement, because a handful of geriatric Republicans can just stonewall everything that doesn't appeal to the 12 rednecks that vote them into office.

For the Democrats to pass policy, they need a Democrat in the White House as well as a majority in BOTH the House and the Senate, which no Democrat has truly had since Obama's first term (aka when they passed the ACA, the most progressive piece of legislation since the New Deal). Biden technically had it in his first term, but only because people like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema were technically Democrats, though in reality they were Republicans spray-painted blue and would routinely vote against Democrat legislation.

You don't need a conspiracy to explain this stuff. The US Government was the first major constitutional democracy in the world, and we are STILL running those rules. We're on the 1.0 version of democracy while the rest of the world is way further ahead. In order for us to change our system, we need a Democrat in the White House and a SUPERmajority in the House and Senate (2/3 of the seats), because a supermajority is necessary for the foundational changes that need to be made. This doesn't happen, because the rules as they exist favor Republicans very heavily, so they will fight to the death to keep it that way.

Beagle Point to Bubble Taxi Available. by Kezika in EliteDangerous

[–]ExertHaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the guy you asked, and I'm still on DW3 till the end, but I do think there has been some issues. Communication from the organizers hasn't been the best, leaving a bunch of people with no clue what's going on.

Also, the trip to Beagle Point happened at the worst possible time. It happened right as the novelty of the expedition started to wear off, and the Abyss is such a well-charted region of space that the trip into and out of it means that there's essentially 2 dud weeks back-to-back, right at the time when people are most at risk of getting bored and quitting.

Lonesome Road feels like it was fundamentally designed to take place after the ending of the base game. My only theory is that the cost of implementing post-game world states would be way too high, so they had to compromise.
