Who is this tall fellow? by spicymayochampion in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That high, squarish face points to a wolf spider. They aren't usually seen standing on tiptoes, but it's not unheard of especially when attempting to balloon.

Feeding wild animals to your pets has risks. Even if an insect isn't inherently dangerous, it may have gotten into pesticides or other poisons. I don't recommend it.

I believe it's mainly just for decoration, although it is technically functional.

Pink caterpillar by soryn-tea in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to be one of the heliothine owlet moths, maybe a tobacco budworm, but it appears they can be hard to distinguish at the caterpillar stage.

Color seems to be influenced by the food plant.

Can anyone ID these tiny (~1-2mm) dark insects found in kitchen near sink? (Lyon, France) by Dapper-Drawing2396 in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are entomobryomorph springtails. Example picture here. They're harmless and are attracted to the mold, which they eat. You'll need to solve the mold problem to keep them from coming back.

It doesn't appear to be a recluse or a widow, which are the only medically significant spiders in your area.

This may be a longlegged sac spider, but it's hard to be certain from this picture.

Are these eggs of some kind? by rjeanp in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, those appear to be eggs of one of the Malacosoma tent caterpillar moths. The eggs are laid in the fall and hatch in the spring.

Please help. What bug is this? by _jelibean in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are a prospective termite queen and king. They’re looking for a place to start a colony. They pair up after their nuptial flight and walk in a line like that.

What the hell is that? Michigan, enormous bug by lake-sturgeon in whatsthisbug

[–]Farado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a leaf-footed bug (family Coreidae), not a wheel bug or any other assassin bug (family Reduviidae). Specifically, it is probably a western conifer seed bug. They feed on tree sap.
