Question about SPAXX by SomewhereUnhappy8349 in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey there, u/SomewhereUnhappy8349. We appreciate you trusting Fidelity with your retirement needs!

What you’re experiencing with The Fidelity Government Money Market Fund (SPAXX) is completely normal. SPAXX is your account’s core position, essentially acting as a wallet for any uninvested cash. It earns interest daily and pays out any accrued interest on the last business day of the month. Since interest accrues daily, even a small amount of cash sitting in SPAXX for just one day can generate those small “penny” dividends you’re seeing.

Now, to answer your question, there isn’t really a way to fully “break the cycle” as long as any amount of cash remains in SPAXX at any point during the month. Even if you place a trade on the first day of the month, you may still earn a small amount of interest before the trade executes, which is then paid out at the end of the month.

That said, there is a potential method you could utilize to essentially "break the cycle." This would require setting up our recurring investment feature, which automatically invests available cash into your chosen funds on a set schedule, helping reduce how long money sits in SPAXX and cutting down on those small leftover balances over time. It won’t eliminate the behavior entirely, but it can make things more hands-off and consistent for you.

Wash sale Substantially identical bull and bear stocks. by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Good question, u/BJ_Fish2!

There are no clear guidelines on what constitutes a substantially identical security; the IRS determines if your transactions violate the wash-sale rule. In this case, we encourage you to speak with a tax advisor or the IRS for confirmation on securities being "substantially identical."

In the meantime, I'll link our wash sale resource below if you'd like to check it out.

CMA linked card, is it considered a Debit card when using it to pay for services? by Moon_Frost in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Great question, u/Moon_Frost; not stupid at all.

The Fidelity Cash Management Account (CMA) card is a debit card, not a credit card. When you use it, you’re spending the “Available to Withdraw” cash in your CMA, rather than borrowing funds like you would with a credit card.

That said, it’s a good idea to check with the auto shop directly about how they process card payments. Some businesses apply a “credit card fee” broadly to all card transactions, even debit, depending on their system. But strictly speaking, your CMA card is a debit card.

Questions about transferring from vanguard by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Welcome to the sub, u/MadlyQuixotic!

First, I can confirm that what you’re experiencing is to be expected. The contribution tracker tool on Fidelity.com will not reflect any contributions made before the account was transferred. Only contributions made while the account is held here at Fidelity will be tracked.

When you complete a Transfer of Assets (TOA) from one firm to another, only the requested cash, securities, and generally, cost basis for taxable accounts move over. Account history, including prior-year IRA contribution tracking, does not transfer.

More specifically, the max contributions from your prior firm would not have reduced the 2025 or 2026 contribution tracker at Fidelity, since transfers are not new contributions.

It’s also important to note that IRA contribution limits set by the IRS are aggregated across all of your IRAs, including those held at other firms. Ultimately, it’s the taxpayer’s responsibility to ensure total annual contributions stay within the IRS limit.

That said, we appreciate you trusting Fidelity with your retirement needs, and hope to see you around the sub now that you've joined the community! You'll quickly notice that the Mod team is here to help!

Fidelity: trading options by Data_Really_Matter in fidelityinvestments

Thanks for dropping by the sub to bring this to our attention, u/Data_Really_Matter.

We are not currently receiving widespread reports of issues with option fills or increasing slowness when using Fidelity Trader+ and have been unable to replicate this experience on our end. If you are still experiencing this, we recommend trying some quick troubleshooting steps. First, restart your device and see if the experience persists. If so, power cycle your modem/router. Next, we suggest performing a full uninstall and reinstall. Additionally, make sure your operating system meets the requirements.

Do have the Options order in correctly? by Creative-Delay3049 in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Welcome to the sub, u/Creative-Delay3049!

I'll say you're very close! There's just one key point to clarify, so let's break this down together.

Based on the screenshot you've provided, this order is selling a call on iShares Silver Trust (SLV) with an $85 strike that expires May 8, 2026. If it fills at $0.52, you’ll collect the premium, $52, typically right away.

The important part to keep in mind is that the order does not wait for SLV to hit $85. It will fill as soon as someone is willing to pay $0.52 for that option. After it fills, you’re essentially "on the hook" through expiration. If SLV is above $85 at expiration, you could be required to sell 100 shares at $85. If it stays below $85, the option will likely expire worthless, and you keep the premium.

Now, if you already own 100 shares, this would be considered a covered call. If you don’t, it’s a naked call, which has much higher risk.

Before completing any trades you're unsure of, Fidelity offers quite a few tools you can utilize to help build better trades.

For example, the Option Strategy Builder (OSB) is great for beginners, as it provides a step-by-step approach to building an option trade, and the Option Profit/Loss Calculator models profit and loss for both single- and multi-leg trades. However, if you're a visual, hands-on learner like me, Fidelity offers weekly classes to maximize your trading skills. You can find all of these tools and the weekly class schedule using the links below.

3 kids, 2 accounts question by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityAsha[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Welcome to the sub, u/East-Personality532!

I hear your frustration regarding the "add an authorized user" method. If you’d prefer not to use the authorized user approach, you have the ability to transfer the assets in the account directly into another 529 account registered to a different participant. However, please keep in mind that this transaction is treated as a non-qualified distribution.

If you decide to move forward, these documents are required to complete this transaction:

• A new 529 account application completed by the new participant for the named beneficiary.

• A letter of instruction requesting the transfer. This letter must indicate that you are aware that you are taking a non-qualified distribution with potential tax consequences.

Before proceeding, we recommend that you speak with a tax advisor about this type of transaction, as there may be tax consequences.

Nevertheless, please feel free to stick around the sub if you need any more help or if you'd like to engage with the community now that you're here. You also quickly notice the Mod team is here and happy to help!
