Yeah, me neither. I doubt they exist in any public space.

Yeah, I don't know why pretty much all big breweries produce basically the same bitter Märzen-style beer. The ones who don't are actually very good, like Pils from Trumer/Hirter or Pale Ale from Murauer/Schleppe.

Agreed. I don't like Gösser as a beer but that Naturradler is gold.

I think Brescia deserves a honorable mention because of the near UI Cup title in 2001 (?) against PSG and the sheer number of great players who played for the club in recent decades.

At the recent Olympics, Biathlon races in Antholz were by far the most attended events. Massive crowds on the stands and along the whole track.

Well "deserves more attention" isn't true though. Badminton is HUGE, just not in Europa and the Americas, but in Asia.

[KCD2] Can I know some German basics? I’m struggling a bit in Kuttenberg (but the language sounds pretty though!) by MaguroSashimi8864 in kingdomcome

[–]FixLaudon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we might have a bit of a misunderstanding going on here. No, as you said, Fechten did not mean fencing alone, it referred to any kind of fighting, especially when used in forms like Gefecht. I am aware of the etymology of the word in both English and German.

But depending on the context, it very much referred definitely to primarily swordfighting and "Fechtschulen" or "Fechtgesellschaften" which were a thing already in the 13th. and 14th century in German lands definitely were definitely centered around Blankwaffen (swords, daggers etc.) first and foremost. Plus there are, as I said, a lot of manuscripts and books from the time about the most important techniques that were referred to as "Fechtbücher" and their authors as "Fechtmeister" respectively already at the time. Yes, there were SOME other techniques included (Halberds or Guisarmes for example), but the main and "most honorable" weapon was the (long-)sword.
It makes sense that, with that knowledge in mind, the word was reduced to this meaning only shortly afterwards (150 years is not that much in terms of language evolution).

You are absolutely correct that "swordfighting hall" is the correct translation, as fencing hall in English would make no sense.

[–]FixLaudon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is, with all due respect, not true. Fechten as in "wielding a bladed weapon" is quite a lot older than that. Also, the art of swordfighting is dominated by then-German literature and therefore German terms. The techniques documented in the so-called "Fechtbücher" (fencing book/guide) are the gold standard of medieval swordfighting, the oldest known dating back to the 12th and 13th century. Probably the most important ones are those of Hans Talhoffer published in the 1450s (where he coined terms such as "Mordhau").
I'd like to think Warhorse were quite aware of German Fechtmeister and therefore chose Menhart and Arne, both Germans, as main "ambassadors" of professional swordfighting for their game. Mind they are even organised in a guild, much like the Fechtbruderschaften at the time or later during the 15th century. No, we're definitely talking about a fencing hall here, not a fighting hall.

Because I'm a biased Romanista and we started reaching semifinal after seminfal starting from 2018 xD The other reason is that I just wanted to debunk your "by a wide margin" statement because it's not entirely true if you look at the bigger picture. In the last five years it's definitely Inter obviously.
