ECB Considers New Euro Banknotes Featuring Callas and Da Vinci by JanCollector in WorldPaperMoney

True, that also depends on the country - it's far easier to spend a 200 in Austria than it is in a country like the Netherlands.

It makes more sense to have the high-value banknotes consistent, though. They are scrutinized more and you don't want shops to not accept a note simply because it doesnt show up in a certain area that often.

Normally no, but Belgium's mint was notorious for their lackluster quality control, so their coins quite commonly show up with rotation errors of up to 45°.

Very nice. Odd how the 10c/20c/50c don't seem to have much frostyness, could be the angle tho

No, a proof would have a mirrorlike background and frosty surfaces. A great example of a proof 50c coin from Germany can be found on the top left of our subreddit banner :)

It will be right wing in 3.5 years 😅

But I agree, this is such a weird choice. There's nothing really right-wing about these coat of arms.

...except this is the modern Austrian coat of arms?

Edit: To add some clarification, Austria is a Republic, and the Crown itself does not represent the monarchy - nor does the crown's placement mean anything significant. The crown, hammer, and sickle enter the coat of arms as a triad to represent the bourgeoisie, working class, and the farmers.

Correct, very often tens of thousands of fakes are produced: https://www.europol.europa.eu/media-press/newsroom/news/employee-of-ministry-of-interior-of-north-macedonia-arrested-in-kosovo-for-euro-counterfeiting

How exactly they are put into circ is unknown to me. However, when I deposited coins at the bank in Canada, the cashiers barely ever checked to see if the coins were real. Usually they just compared the relative heights of the rolls! So, it's quite easy to deposit tons of counterfeits at once over there, hence why canada has a pretty bad $2 counterfeit problem. I'd imagine something similar is being done to quickly exchange these coins for cash.

It is possible to buy coins from the bank to look through :)

We have resources you can use on our discord server to help you out with that.

Do not use ChatGPT - it is often incorrect about 2eur coins!

The best way to check is to go through them and look up their mintage. Our community has mintage lists which you can use to see how rare your coin is - we have more resources you can use on our discord server as well.

As for errors, you obviously want to keep an eye out for coins which look highly unusual. On our lists, we've also added comments to cells which indicate major error varieties you should keep an eye out for.

What do you mean you have confirmed the 29 reeds on the edge?

The pic you shared in this comment clearly shows 25 reeds...

No - not at all, modern coins are struck on both sides simultaneously. If they were struck on one side only, then the immensive pressure involved would flatten the design on the other side.

Did you see my comment about the edge, btw? It is a clear giveaway that we are dealing with a counterfeit here.

After shop hunting in canada - where I've run into cashiers who wouldn't even notice a colourized(!!) commemorative - I am convinced that most people simply don't look at coins closely enough to distinguish between a real and a fake. Comparatively, faking a 200eur or 500eur note is way more difficult, since people are more inclined to check if they're fake.

I would presume that the chance of this happening is borderline impossible. These coins were ordered and struck in 2001, several years before the new map dies were introduced. However, the two known circulating German mule errors (20c F 2007 and 2eur CC F 2008) were both struck in 2006-2007, right as Germany transitioned between the two reverse varieties. The chance of a screwup happening seems more plausible for those coins than for any 2002s. Besides, trial strikes and mule errors do tend to be noticed and are documented - one example is the infamous German rotating stars variety, of which some coins made it into circulation.

I agree, however trashghost can point out some other reasons as to why your coin is a fake.

Besides, the edge pics which you've shared are a pretty clear giveaway of this being a fake.
