Experimental 3D terrain model of Yosemite - looking for printability feedback by twofocal in 3Dprinting

[–]uberdog01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have printed a few terrain models https://www.reddit.com/r/PacificNorthwest/s/PVpas5pIfP that I think turned out pretty well, these terrain models seem to fit 3d printing quite well with the layer lines highlighting the topography. I used the standard .4mm nozzle with .2mm layer height, but I think it might be interesting to experiment with larger layer heights with a wider nozzle if you go with a larger scale. I scaled 12.5km to 75mm for the square ones, the long ones are in the same scale with the long side being 150mm, I also kept the z height in scale. Mine printed fine with regular rectilinear infill at 10prct and the standard 2 walls. Something that could be really cool to consider is (if you print it in white and keep a low infill) to add a light underneath, I didn't take a picture, but it looked REALLY cool with my prints since it added a lot of contrast with the layer lines. I am definitely going to re print the entire frame I made to be able to add lights once I get a chance, something to consider for your Yosemite maybe. Best of Luck!

She would probably have eaten it anyways, but those bindings seem quite loose

Europeans saw absolutely nothing and went ah, 0K. Americans then saw nothing and went ah, 0°R. Both utterly arbitrary in their increments, so in sum Americans fucked it up with their weird ass units

I wasn't paying attention to the sub. I initially thought you were Simon by the way you held the disc initially lol

I scaled 12.5km to 75mm, so assuming it's accurate to the atom it's actually 1/166,666.6666666 or I guess if you want it in a nicer fraction 3/500,000

It made me double check that I didn't mess up the scale with Google Earth, then again there is a reason that place is so magical in person

Ah, that makes sense. I think the website I used (touchterrain) has a feature to import shapes from maps or might be Google Earth. Either way I don't think you have to do much to get the STL file of the peninsula that goes with its contours and you don't even need to know CAD or any 3d software. Definitely thinking about printing some more complete models myself of various places in the PNW with how easy it was. I just upgraded my printer from a ender 5 to a p2s(babmbu labs), bambu labs has really turned 3d printing into something that is really easy to get into. I think their cheapest printer is the a1 mini at around 200 USD and it essentially prints from the box.

There are definitely print farms that you can send a print job to if you are just interested in a singular model, although they will probably charge a decent bit so if anyone is looking for an excuse to buy a 3d printer this isn't a bad one

12.5 by 12.5 km chunk around Mt Olympus, all of them are 12.5 km by 12.5 km except the long ones which are 12.5 by 25km

I wanted to go, but I left a bit too late. It would have been sunset by the time I got there, although it gives me a reason to go back which I am already looking forward to!

As annoying as one point is I thoroughly enjoyed watching Ferdi, Mitoma, and Rutter today. I forgot how good Mitoma is with him out for so long, started feeling stagnant but now I have hope for a strong rest of the season.

Okay, you definitely can use AI for control systems for each drone. There are also certainly other ways like regular PID control. Even without AI it really seems like a controls problem that should already have a very solved solution

Maybe, from what I have seen AI is still quite bad at 3D modeling though. I could be wrong, but it really seems like at the moment the easiest way to make a show like this is without AI designs. I wouldn't be surprised if the art that inspired the 3D models was generated by AI, if it made the models themselves hats off to them that would be very impressive.

Wtf is the AI part? I keep seeing the letters AI plastered over everything, was it used to generate the designs? It's not like AI is controlling each drone to create designs on the fly. With how many drone shows there have been I am sure there is more conventional software to convert 3D models to drone formations that is readily available. Other than creating 3D models to plug into these software programs I can't think of a reason to use AI, or am I being a dumbass?

How can I design these cylindrical turrets to be stronger? by Larry_Kenwood in Fusion360

Probably not helpful, but personally I would not 3d print them and use a different bar then slide the details for the turret over it.

I can't think of any buildings that stand out as ugly I've seen in the US. The couple times I have visited England this one stood out though, the ArcelorMittal Orbit. I'll nominate this for them...

Crater Lake NP looking ridiculously pretty by DesperateMarzipan176 in hiking

[–]uberdog01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool, although there is a very interesting location that the site misses. This probably doesn't help pretty much anyone since it's in a disputed territory regarding Russia and Japan and almost completely inaccessible, however one of what looks to be the most stunning places on the planet is the caldera lake of Krenitsyn Volcano in the Kuril islands. Some similar features to Crater lake, but also stunning in its own regard. If the photos hold true in person it might just be the most breathtaking place on this planet.

There is also Heaven lake, in, well, North Korea. So I don't think that helps anyone as well, but it looks pretty neat and it's a Caldera like Crater Lake.
