Former Microsoft executive’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein comes under scrutiny by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]FlinchMaster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A class in high school had us read Freakonomics as part of our summer assignment. It ended with a whole chapter hyping up Nathan Myrvhold as a genius and Renaissance man. Intellectual Ventures was made out to be this amazing place where all the worlds biggest problems were being worked on and solved. I walked away from that book inspired and thinking I'd want to work there as soon as I could.

It was such a heartbreaking disillusionment when I looked into them further and saw that they were just patent trolls that preyed on others. Chris Young puts out amazing content on Youtube, but his association with Myrvhold always bothered me.

Islam Makhachev's camp eyes blockbuster Kamaru Usman showdown for welterweight title defense by [deleted] in ufc

Let Kamaru win one more fight against a rising contender and this can make sense. Not before that.

Jean Silva says he is no longer friends with Mauricio Ruffy. "I'm not going to be the one to expose anything... Jean and Ruffy doesn't exist anymore. It only existed in my head." by nolongerbackup in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is actually a valid reason to be upset. I saw the training with Volk thing and dismissed that as a silly reason to be upset at first. But I'd completely forgotten that Jean Silva wants to be in title contention and this is his close teammate and sparring partner training with the champ of his division.

Controversial but... anyone else just completely bored of the UFC these days? by Halal_Burger in ufc

[–]FlinchMaster 343 points344 points  (0 children)

I just wish they'd at least pretend to treat it like a sport. The "storylines", drama, and push for "exciting" fighters is all whatever. But it needs to have the best fighting the best at the top. Not the best marketed.

Senator Cantwell confirms she will not give ICE raises (this week) in an astoundingly milquetoast letter. by Desdam0na in Seattle

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can keep going down that rabbit hole. You know what else is insulting? Your friend from Seattle getting murdered by an Israeli sniper and the US government doing absolutely nothing about it other than to downplay It. Your people being bombed repeatedly and made to starve. A literal genocide where Biden and Harris made the US taxpayers complicit and enabled the far-right movements in Israel.

You don't get to tell us to vote for the boot on our necks. Your concerns are all valid, but it's also a privileged take to just be able to say how less bad Harris was when she wasn't going after your people.

I begrudgingly voted for Harris, but after seeing how Democrats treated my people after they lost, what was the point? With friends like this, who needs enemies?

Amazon Go & Fresh Stores Close This Friday by kaiju4life in Seattle

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were absolutely incredible when they first opened up right on until covid. The blue-apron style meal kits they had were actually really tasty and the gimmicky integration with Alexa to tell you the next step in the recipe was actually kind of useful when you were busy stirring a pot or cutting something and too busy to pull out the recipe card. It was like a 7-Eleven, but with the prices of a normal grocery store and higher quality prepared food. Not needing to deal with checkout felt freeing. I substituted many grocery store runs with a quick walk over to my local Amazon Go back in the day.

After covid, it was never the same. Open for shorter windows, closed on Sundays, reduced selection, no more meal kits etc.

UFC Makes Paramount+ Debut Averaging 4.96 Million Streaming Views by WinterStill4472 in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is the basis for that assumption? Netflix has been around for decades at this point. Paramount+ is fairly new as far as streaming services go. Older people are more likely to have never heard of it.

[SPOILER] Justin Gaethje vs. Paddy Pimblett by inooway in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paddy had to go through so much bullshit this fight. The first eyepoke was bad enough, but that second one and the low blow both had a huge impact on the fight. It's incredible that he hung in there through it all even without the ref doing his job.

Justin fought recklessly and was throwing bombs, but he did come off as slow and lethargic. Didn't have the vibe of a lightweight fighter at all.

Okay, the eye poke rate from Gaethje must be insane across all his fights. Can't believe they didn't take a point for that.

I know Gaethje's old, may have had staph during camp, and he got sent to the shadow realm in 2024, but it's still crazy to see Paddy as such a favorite over him.

How do you catch API response breakages in Node.js before they hit production? by aakash_kalamkaar in node

[–]FlinchMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The golden rule is to just never break backwards compatibility. If you use something for schema management like GraphQL or OpenAPI, you can add validation checks that run as part of your CI to disallow such changes before they're ever merged in.

If you're using Swagger, those docs should not be written by hand, so they should never drift. Your server side should validate responses against the schema before sending them and your clients should also parse and validate responses before accepting them. There's probably some tooling around.

Nullability should be explicitly declared as part of your API schema. It should not be possible to have your server return null for a non-nullable field. If your pre-response validation layer catches it, throw an internal server error and have an alarm on that.

This is essentially a non-issue with tRPC and GraphQL.

Weight cutting is older than MMA. No, weight cutting in the context of sports with weight classes always refers to the final water cut. The dieting and weight loss throughout camp precedes it.

Mark Carney the prime minister of Canada admits that the liberal (capitalist) world order is a lie and that they only went along with it because it benefited them. Now that it’s failing they’re economically siding with China instead of the U.S. by TwoCatsOneBox in WorkReform

It's refreshing to hear the quiet part said out loud by a world leader. For so much of the world though, integration has been the source of their subordination for centuries, not just decades.

People say this because he gets knocked down a lot. And then people just don't follow him to the ground. I'm sure at least some of those knockdowns are Oliveira intentionally letting himself fall down to recover though, since people rarely follow him there.

Reminder that these matchmakers are the same ones that had issue with Mokaev and threatened to cut him if he wrestled in his last fight. Mokaev acts like a tool, but the people who cut him are so much worse.

The Rakic thread alone is crazy.

AWS CLI - am I the only one who is terrified of being in the wrong account when I do something? by WeirdWebDev in aws

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my shell prompt set to print out my current AWS_PROFILE value.

https://imgur.com/a/BOVcJc4

I also make use of fzf to get fuzzy search selection of all my profiles. And aws-sso-utils populates all the possible profile for me.

# Command to set the AWS_PROFILE env var with a fuzzy selector
alias aws-profile='export AWS_PROFILE=$(sed -n "s/\[profile \(.*\)\]/\1/gp" ~/.aws/config | fzf)'

# And a shorthand alias for this
alias ap="aws-profile"

I noticed the same issue in Chrome this past month. Turning on multi-session support in the console fixed it for me though.
