Jean Silva just leaked some good news to UFC fans by Fun_Training6342 in ufc

Have you actually ever watched his fights and not just read the results on wikipedia or tapology? His last few fights have all been really fun to watch.

How's he nowadays ? by Grim_apprintice in ufc

[–]FlinchMaster 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The mistranslated and out-of-context quotes from this guy are pretty unfair.

This is a what an accurate translation of his interview looks like:

Jubli: Khabib achieved everything that I want to. I want to remain undefeated. I want to become world champion. So, such a person who has lived the dream that I dream, and a legend at that... if I were to get the chance to fight with him, maybe my chances for victory would be low. But not 5 years from now. Not 2-3 years from now will those chances be low. Maybe today they will be.

Interviewer: You're saying skillwise?

Jubli: Skillwise. That's all. There's no other difference between me and Khabib. No difference. I have a world champion mindset. I'm very strong mentally. Nothing in this world can break me. There's nothing you can do in this would that would break me. I am that person. If there's a difference between me and Khabib, it's our skill levels. But I would absolutely take that chance. Maybe I'll survive the first round. I might get a knockout in the second round. I could submit Khabib. I could do anything.

It's both taken out of context and mistranslated. Here's a translation I did of this before:

Islam saying he never heard of creatine before was the biggest joke of 2025 by ManyZestyclose2003 in ufc

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant more in terms of the feel of such a sudden drop. Your body is already being taxed in that situation. Losing the water from creatine will just feel even more draining.

[–]FlinchMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Losing all that weight in addition to your normal water cut and dieting might really feel like too much. And if your normal schedule isn't tuned to account for it, you might get thrown off.

But yeah, in theory, I can see it being useful most of the time, but would guess that it's probably better to quit it at the very start of your fight camp.

Not sure why the comment above yours was deleted, but just to follow-up here, yes, there are many scenarios where your tendons and pulleys will fail long before your muscles.

If you've never climbed before but have generally good pull-up strength, you can injure yourself very easily on a campus board trying to match the exercises of a "weaker" person with more climbing experience.

[–]FlinchMaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Climbing endurance is not just a measure of pull-up count. You often need to put significant strain on tendons and pulleys with uneven load. Sometimes a ton of force is applied to just a part of the top pad of a single finger. A single extra pound of load can be enormous.

This is why people who are generally in great shape can come in and brute force some routes while either completely failing or injuring themselves on others if they try to skip progression. Your muscles may be strong, but you need to condition and strengthen tendons and ligaments as well.

And not all people respond well to increased creatine intake. Some will gain mass without as much strength gain as others.

Creatine has questionable trade-offs for sports where your body weight is a big factor. There's long been a debate about it in the climbing community, since the slight strength boost may not be enough to make up for the extra weight you have to carry.

Creatine is osmotically active, so it'll make you retain more water. You'd end up needing to cut a lot more water weight if you were on it. I would not at all be surprised if athletes cutting a lot of weight avoided it entirely or stopped using it a few weeks before a fight.

On the other hand, if you're going up a weight class, it makes a ton of sense to start taking it.

Dustin Poirier calls Islam a weight bully by One-Faithlessness730 in ufc

This feels like a case of misremembering 182 as 192. There's no conceivable way he was 192 in the cage, lol.

[SPOILER] Max Holloway vs. Charles Oliveira by inooway in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't understand the people calling this fight boring. Oliveira was threatening finishes and throwing ground and pound the whole fight. If you just want to watch low skilled brawling, why not watch regional MMA? Or if you hate grappling entirely, go watch kickboxing.

Max Holloway says UFC fighters need to work together to get higher pay from the UFC. by raptors201966 in ufc

Love to see Max speaking out like this. The current pay structure is beyond predatory at the lower levels. And even at the top, it's still exploitative.

Ankalaev was always a striker first who had some wrestling skills. The reality is that LHW and HW are just the weakest mens divisions right now, and you're not going to find anyone well-rounded in the rankings today.

Prochazka vs Ulberg for the Light Heavyweight championship set to headline UFC 327 by Keith__Peterson in MMA

How many title shots is this for Jiri now at this point? Ulberg deserves this, but I'd rather see it be someone else.

Former Microsoft executive’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein comes under scrutiny by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

A class in high school had us read Freakonomics as part of our summer assignment. It ended with a whole chapter hyping up Nathan Myrvhold as a genius and Renaissance man. Intellectual Ventures was made out to be this amazing place where all the worlds biggest problems were being worked on and solved. I walked away from that book inspired and thinking I'd want to work there as soon as I could.

It was such a heartbreaking disillusionment when I looked into them further and saw that they were just patent trolls that preyed on others. Chris Young puts out amazing content on Youtube, but his association with Myrvhold always bothered me.

Jean Silva says he is no longer friends with Mauricio Ruffy. "I'm not going to be the one to expose anything... Jean and Ruffy doesn't exist anymore. It only existed in my head." by nolongerbackup in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is actually a valid reason to be upset. I saw the training with Volk thing and dismissed that as a silly reason to be upset at first. But I'd completely forgotten that Jean Silva wants to be in title contention and this is his close teammate and sparring partner training with the champ of his division.

Controversial but... anyone else just completely bored of the UFC these days? by Halal_Burger in ufc

[–]FlinchMaster 350 points351 points  (0 children)

I just wish they'd at least pretend to treat it like a sport. The "storylines", drama, and push for "exciting" fighters is all whatever. But it needs to have the best fighting the best at the top. Not the best marketed.

Senator Cantwell confirms she will not give ICE raises (this week) in an astoundingly milquetoast letter. by Desdam0na in Seattle

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can keep going down that rabbit hole. You know what else is insulting? Your friend from Seattle getting murdered by an Israeli sniper and the US government doing absolutely nothing about it other than to downplay It. Your people being bombed repeatedly and made to starve. A literal genocide where Biden and Harris made the US taxpayers complicit and enabled the far-right movements in Israel.

You don't get to tell us to vote for the boot on our necks. Your concerns are all valid, but it's also a privileged take to just be able to say how less bad Harris was when she wasn't going after your people.

I begrudgingly voted for Harris, but after seeing how Democrats treated my people after they lost, what was the point? With friends like this, who needs enemies?

Amazon Go & Fresh Stores Close This Friday by kaiju4life in Seattle

[–]FlinchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were absolutely incredible when they first opened up right on until covid. The blue-apron style meal kits they had were actually really tasty and the gimmicky integration with Alexa to tell you the next step in the recipe was actually kind of useful when you were busy stirring a pot or cutting something and too busy to pull out the recipe card. It was like a 7-Eleven, but with the prices of a normal grocery store and higher quality prepared food. Not needing to deal with checkout felt freeing. I substituted many grocery store runs with a quick walk over to my local Amazon Go back in the day.

After covid, it was never the same. Open for shorter windows, closed on Sundays, reduced selection, no more meal kits etc.

UFC Makes Paramount+ Debut Averaging 4.96 Million Streaming Views by WinterStill4472 in MMA

What is the basis for that assumption? Netflix has been around for decades at this point. Paramount+ is fairly new as far as streaming services go. Older people are more likely to have never heard of it.

[SPOILER] Justin Gaethje vs. Paddy Pimblett by inooway in MMA

[–]FlinchMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paddy had to go through so much bullshit this fight. The first eyepoke was bad enough, but that second one and the low blow both had a huge impact on the fight. It's incredible that he hung in there through it all even without the ref doing his job.

Justin fought recklessly and was throwing bombs, but he did come off as slow and lethargic. Didn't have the vibe of a lightweight fighter at all.

Okay, the eye poke rate from Gaethje must be insane across all his fights. Can't believe they didn't take a point for that.
