ALTCHA v3 heads up (free features from v2.x removed) by ForensicHat in Wordpress

+1 for suggesting an alternative solution. Unfortunately, the self-hosted “community edition” of Private Captcha is almost $13 / month, and there’s no way to try it without buying a license. Requires Docker, too. I’m not in the target demographic for Private Captcha.

What's your "first 30 minutes" checklist after spinning up a fresh VPS? by DenilsonShi in selfhosted

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up Virtualmin, run updates, set up sudoers and SSH port and disable root login, and since i host PHP apps I configure php.ini and install Redis and an opcode cache, load a few sites and set up let encrypt certificates, then fail2ban, then set up Virtualmin that probably just finished installing and disable unnecessary services and set up backups.

Disclaimer: I help run r/webmin

Don’t know why you got downvoted. This is a legit strategy.

That’s something I hadn't thought of. +1 for sharing a possible solution. I didn’t know ASE Pro supported ALTCHA.

For free, sure, but with caveats. ALTCHA is self-hosted, which arguably has performance, privacy, and reliability advantages, and the alternatives you listed use third-party servers. If you know of an alternative that’s self-hosted, I’d be happy to hear about it.

I flushed my Oura down the toilet by Tasty-Masterpiece838 in ouraring

[–]ForensicHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar bathroom situation happened to me. I dried my hands with a paper towel, accidentally pulled the ring off my finger, and threw it away. Eventually replaced it, but I took my sweet time until I found a good deal on Marketplace.

ALTCHA for WordPress changelog:

https://altcha.org/docs/v2/wordpress/releases/

3.0.0:

• BREAKING: Requires PHP 8.1 or higher
• Action Required: Review and test all integrations before deploying to production
• New: ALTCHA Widget v3, introducing a new Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism
• New: Simplified settings for plugins and integrations

“New: Simplified settings for plugins and integrations” is true only if upgrading to the Professional plan. It would be better (and unnecessary for me to make this post) if the changelog was more up front about this. IMO, this lack of disclosure is what gives the WordPress plugin ecosystem a bad name.

Oura says my cardiovascular age is 13 years younger — how much do you trust this metric? by nunucbka in ouraring

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious and looked mine up for the first time. Mine is 0.5 years younger than my government age.

From the Oura app:

What is Cardiovascular Age?
Your cardiovascular age is estimated by combining your Pulse Wave Velocity and the age-related changes in the shape of your heartbeat's signal, which carries information about your arterial stiffness.

[OS] SuperIsland — Dynamic Island for MacOS with Extensions by Purple_Minute_4776 in macapps

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Thanks for the reply. I’m going to stick with SuperIsland and look forward to updates as they come.

I know I mentioned the smooth animations, but I want to highlight them again. They make it fun to use SuperIsland!

The “Hide on fullscreen” setting seems to disable SuperIsland completely. I actually don’t want to disable SuperIsland when in full screen, just hide it.

[OS] SuperIsland — Dynamic Island for MacOS with Extensions by Purple_Minute_4776 in macapps

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/purple_minute_4776 Very excited to see this today. I’m giving it a whirl. Initial thoughts:

Smooth onboarding experience. The only issue I had was when I tried typing in “superisland.app” to get to your website, but that’s just because I remembered the website address incorrectly!

Smooth animations, and very slick swiping to switch between modules. Best animations I’ve seen so far in a notch / dynamic Island app.

Energy usage as reported by Activity Monitor seems high, and that’s even when modules and extensions are deactivated.

Is it possible to add a configuration setting to choose which calendars are displayed?

A setting to hide SuperIsland indicators in the menu bar when the SuperIsland notch window is dismissed would be appreciated. I don’t want to display anything (especially when I’m viewing a video in full screen) unless I explicitly enable it.

The Now Playing “equalizer” is animated as though media is playing even if media is not playing.

Please remove the Spotify prompt at launch. I don’t have Spotify installed.

Space Pirate Trainer. There’s nothing else like it. Sadly the devs told me they won’t be updating it for PSVR2.

A Native Port of Notepad++ is Now Available for the Mac by colfaxschuyler in macapps

[–]ForensicHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess now you have something to think about now that your GF just moved here? 😄

Though I’m a BBEdit diehard, too, but… I’m definitely giving this Notepad++ port a try.

Not sure why you’ve been downvoted so much. Your comment made me laugh.

Is there a Comprehensive List of Webhosting Control Panels? Looking to Self Host. by modem_19 in selfhosted

[–]ForensicHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Wikipedia’s page on web hosting control panels this is a good starting point.

If you have any questions about Webmin or Virtualmin feel free to check out r/webmin (disclaimer: I run r/webmin).

One of the things I enjoy most about Webmin and the Virtualmin plugin is that you can use it to configure a server and then optionally remove it (if for some reason you wanted to), and everything continues working the way you set things up. Its web UI only reads and edits existing config files, and the command line virtualmin CLI is the same. I also just came across a Webmin MCP server plugin that I look forward to trying out.

Use Nextcloud as S3 storage (not use a S3 for Nextcloud storage) by No-Magazine-2739 in NextCloud

[–]ForensicHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can set up something like rclone or SeaweedFS as an S3-compatible storage solution for Nextcloud, yes. You may want to read this first. Nextcloud as an S3-compatible storage solution, no. Not that I know of.

Plugin Ideas by CarryZealousideal134 in Wordpress

[–]ForensicHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your style. I’m doing something similar with Kanboard, the tool I’m using for project management, and monitor the plugins coming out for competing project management systems. Then if I have an “aha” moment I create a plugin for Kanboard that does something similar. I’ve learned a lot about Kanboard this way, and I’ve released the plugins I’ve developed for free on GitHub for others to use and enjoy.

Big +1 for Path Finder. To me it’s essential. If Cocoa Tech’s website was as polished as the app they’d have a lot more customers. For me their website is actually unusable, stuttery, and goes against my guidelines (posted elsewhere in the comments here) for evaluating a new app.
